Keels?

Feels like Keels is a smokescreen. You cannot hide wanting back in the draft, you can hide who you are targeting.

Or more likely. Nico having a blast on draft night. Doing all the pre draft interviews. Leading to all kinds of rumors. Only to do nothing during the draft. Come back for the post draft interview to tell us that he had fun.

Why would the Mavs have a motivation to spread a rumor they want back in the draft? How does it benefit them?

Why would other teams make up the Mavs calling them, asking about the price of their draft pick in the late 1st, early 2nd? How does that benefit them?

That´s what happened last year. And it wasn´t exactly Nico that spread the rumors. He just gave a couple of vague responses. All he needed to do. Media and fan did the rest.

Two things I remember about last year:

1) Skin Wade was in the draft room and said it was pretty loud and active until Garuba was drafted, then it all went quiet.

2) Nico saying they never got close to getting in because the asking prices were too high.

What rumors are you thinking of?

For reference, Keels shares the same agent as Jerami Grant and Jalen Smith.

The usual vague quotes.

Nothing crazy. A lot of talk but from an outside perspective nothing happened. Just loved the post draft part where he basically stated that doing this for the first time was awesome. Sounded like he really liked his new job.

So who else is there, who WOULD want to be would be spreading a rumor at this time, that a team wants to get back in the draft in late 20s or so and grab Keels?

I think that's your explanation for this odd whisper.

Keels’ representation?

A team currently negotiating to trade a pick with another team who wants Keel, but who won’t cough up the asking price?

Not sure, but my instinct here is that Mavs are catching a stray bullet on this one.

THANKS FOR ALL OF THE WORK IN THIS THREAD!!!!

It really added a ton of enjoyment for many people.

Thanks.  I watch limited amount of college basketball now, but I always love looking at prospects.   I spent a lot of time watching the playoff games but watching youtube highlights on my ipad.   I have always found it fun.  In fact, this period/free agency and summer league is one of my favorite times of the year.   Much more fun when the Mavs have a pick(s).

Yep, both of those are possible for sure.
Keels is intriguing.   He would not be my choice, but he is an interesting prospect.  Built like a truck.  Could develop into a Dillon Brooks type player.  Two things you need to factor in.  1) he played on a team that may have 5 first round picks so he could get lost in the shuffle.  2) he is one of the youngest player in the class.  With that body, that is quite impressive.  The question is how he builds the rest of his game and probably slims down a little.   If he works out, he is going to be a beast for other guards to deal with.

Again, I would prefer a different direction, but you have to account his age and how he was with a college team where he had to pick and choose his spots.

It seems like the media was upfront that getting a draft pick last year was unlikely. I never got my hopes up last year in a significant way and because of that did not invest lots of time. I watched Vrenz and that's about it.

Point being I don't remember smoke that the Mavs were trying to get into the draft.

Also, tons of team were trying to sell their pick to the Mavs but were asking too much.

His D is concerning and his shooting not translating from high school is concerning. I like his strength but his athleticism seems lacking. Not taken with him at all.

My personal guess:

It is Keels representation (and maybe the Mavs doing them a favor) in concert with other teams being honest that the Mavs have at least inquired on the cost of those picks.

Mavs SHOULD be doing their due diligence and if they like someone who could fall there they need to investigate how much it might cost.
Most interesting side story will be Woj vs Shams part 2. Last year Shams was quicker and more accurate.
I thought the Locked On Mav’s podcast made a pretty good argument for hitting ‘reset” on Josh Green today.  The interpretation of the Givony comment yesterday being that Josh for some team’s pick (probably early 2nd) could be the way the Wood deal gets expanded.

Yes, Josh is cost controlled for two more years, but next season it jumps to $4.7mm and the QO is over $6mm in 24.  Maybe Josh shows enough to be worth $4.7mm a year from now, but they have to make that call soon, not next summer.  And, with the team that we appear to have, how does he get the shot to prove himself.  Minutes will be even harder to come by than they were last year.

On the other side of the deal, Josh does have some talent and if you are a team like Orlando with multiple seconds, why not trade one of them for a guy who is still just 21, but not a total rookie (since you’ll be bringing in two of those already).  Dallas gets to start the clock over again on someone (I still think Kamagate) and might not even need a roster slot if we are far enough into the 30’s to make the draftee a two-way instead someone on the 15 man roster.
