Ran across an interesting draft-related snippet dug out by Cato.

The Mavs told him, in their analysis, that whoever they would have picked at 26 would have been "unlikely to ...make next season’s 15-man roster." That is an interesting piece of information as to how they view the depth of the draft (or of their current regard for drafting and developing) --- and either possibility pointing to the same likelihood (ie, the lack of same) of them pursuing a replacement pick in some other move.

I would interpret that as, 1) downplaying the cost of the trade and 2) "the Mavs would likely be unwilling to make room on the 15 man roster." Meaning they only want a certain amount of roster spots taken up by developmental players this year.

JG and FN are 21 and 22....clearly developmental players, rookie aged.

Do they already have their eyes on another reclamation/developmental project (22 yr old Jalen Smith would fit that)?

I really don't like Pinson eating up a roster spot....BUT I 100% understand what he does for this team. I am glad Boban isn't also eating a spot up.

I personally think you should always have THREE main roster spots used for developing young players. I hope the Mavs add one more this offseason one way or another.

I really like the decisive move of removing 5 players (draft pick included) that really do not or would not contribute to the overall team goals.  Regardless of how well Wood does here.  Bench powder? Smile

I think this is a good way of looking at things, as long as it’s tempered with an understanding that coach should prioritize winning over playing the developmental types (though that should also be done within reason).

Do you not view Pinson as a developmental type? I mean, certainly he’s more of that type than Boban, and I get how he’s older than Green, so it’s all relative. But idk, I don’t think it’s crazy to imagine him developing into a rotation guy here.

At 26, soon to be 27, and not getting any meaningful minutes last year? I read that as the Mavs telling us he is a cheerleader and nothing more. I would not see him as "developmental" personally in any way.

Yes, winning is the priority, but long-term winning sometimes demands sacrificing short term wins.

Interesting.

I think he might just get some minutes here and there. I think he’s MUCH more playable than Boban, for example. Who knows? Sometimes all these guys need is to find the right chance somewhere.

I rather doubt the Mavs are going to the trouble of signing him to a two-way contract because he makes a good "cheerleader."

Pinson had one or two nice games during the Covid outbreak, then players began to drift back and the substitution patterns were all over the place. Then Pinson broke his finger or something and that was that for the year.

But my guess is that they're seen him practice, they've seen him in the locker-room, they've seen him in games, and on the bench. I'm guessing they think that if you're going to have a "project" he's the best use of your money.

It’s even worse, they’re about to give him a full-fledged contract to be on the roster.

I have no doubt the “cheerleading” is a big factor and honestly, I’m GLAD they value positive locker room vibes. But like you, I’m hopeful that isn’t the only reason they like him.
RE: Ziga Samar

After watching film on him, I do think he is an NBA talent offensively. You can sure see how his game has been influenced by Luka. And his numbers in the Liga ACB\ are impressive.

But boy, his D is rough. He gives good effort and seems to have the lateral quickness, but his footwork and discipline is really, really bad a lot of the time and he is a screen magnet, seemingly getting stuck on all of them.

Overall I would think his odds of making it in the NBA are low, but I could definitely see a team giving him a shot.

RE: Ibou Dianko Badji

He is definitely an INCREDIBLE physical specimen. 7'8" wingspan from reports. And can move his feet.
