I try to stay away from Fish related stuff.  So I don't think I will get around to watching but if he is throwing this out there about Cuban, that is not a good sign.

All of Mavsland will greatly rejoice if this turns out to be true!
I can't imagine what a DISASTEROUS outcome would be for the Mavs.   What would a DISASTER entail?  Would it be like not getting beyond the 1st round of the playoffs in 10 years despite having two different first ballot Hall of Famers talents during that timespan, having your young Superstar deeply unhappy with the head coach and not on speaking terms with the other max contract player in the franchise,  and having given out slew of draft picks and a max contract to a player to be a #2 star who is barely playable in the playoffs and is practically untradable now?    Would that qualify as a DISASTER?    Gosh I couldn't even imagine what that would feel like.    Can't believe Cuban messed up such a good situation !!!

Good stuff from Fish
Fish sounds like the kinda guy who is trying to make a living as a sports/team insider and suddenly lost all of his best longtime sources at a point in his career where he was hoping to coast into retirement.

Still can't help but wonder what a basketball mind like Kidd could do to help Luka become a more seasoned floor general.

Kidd proved to be a bad coach, so this is why he doesn't fill the requirements tbh.
He is the guy that most Bucks fan cite as the person who broke Giannis shot beyond repair. And overall was underwhelming everywhere since he retired, until he was just an assistant coach to a competent one (while having super team too).
I would stay away from him.

The best established coach available atm is non other than Rick Carlisle himself, and probably by a wide margin.
After that, you have Mike D'Antoni ,one of our own in Terry Stotts, and the Van Gundy brothers, . Budenholzer might be available too and there are the typical names like Mark Jackson, Alvin Gentry.
Joerger is another enticing name, but he isn't a player's coach. He always had problem with his players and boss, so the worst fit possible here. He seems better as international coach tbh.

So, tbh I am not sure I am a fan of established coaches, the market is just not filled with those. Unless we are talking about established coaches in NCAA as Calipari (wants NBA return) or Jay Wright or Scott Drew.

I don't to go this way, especially as someone who never been to US.
But the team has white owner (with some irritating comments in his history), and European super star and All Star, and previous long term coach and GM were white.
Is getting an international coach really wise if you want to attract FA? especially if we don't get a black GM/POBO? The media won't be easy on him either. Unless we are eyeing Jokic as FA, I am not sure about such choice, and I am saying that while I have been always of international coaches and always thought they are much better than those in the NBA

Would be the only positive outcome in my opinion. I really hope that the situation wasn´t as bad as McMahon described it but after listening to him and Woj I just cannot imagine that Cuban will change his ways.
After everything we heard in the last couple of days I am suprised that Donnie and RC lasted so long. Not saying that both are without fault (clearly not) but especially in Donnie´s case a lot of us (including me) blamed him for free agency blunders and wasted draft picks in the last couple of years. Turns out that he wasn´t even the one making some of those decisions but still had to act as the scapegoat.

IMO Cuban wants to win more than he wants to be GM. I think if he can get Ujiri by deferring his authority I think he will. Time will tell.

Cuban needs someone who he clearly respects. Else he will continue to meddle.   No matter how much he publicly praised Donnie, part of the allure of keeping him so long was Cuban knowing he could exert his influence over some things that the owner needs to stay out of.

Luka is the same. More than a coach he respects, he needs a veteran leader. A Lowry or a Dragic type who he will trust. JJB not being around IMO was a huge reason why the offense seemed to regress so much from last season in terms of it becoming a much more Luka dominated one. He needs a veteran guard who can gently guide him at this stage in his career.

Fish's comments, for whatever you deem they're worth --

The latest moves put the Mavs in a disastrous place, pending what comes next.

Thinks Rick's departure was part of a chain reaction from the dysfunction. Donnie thought it had reached the point where he had to say something about the "shadow GM." (Fish speculates that Donnie might be one of the sources for the article.) Mark may have fired Donnie for complaining. Then Rick thought, if this is the way things are, I’m out of here. On Monday morning, Rick had no interest in leaving Dallas. And today, he is gone.

Rick and Luka butted heads now and then, but they worked together brilliantly. One of Carlisle’s biggest regrets is probably that he may never again coach a player like Luka. That he would walk away from that speaks volumes.

There was a real conflict between Rick and the analytics department. The analytics department has way too much authority and visibility, compared to most such departments.

If Cuban hires Ujiri, lets Ujiri hire the new coach, Luka is happy with it, and Cuban steps away from the curb, that would put Mark ahead of the game.
Fish is a Donnie/Carlilse loyalist through and through, especially the former. He's trying to defend his buddies. Truth is, what happened is just the business of the NBA. This is nothing new, far from a disaster. Cuban has a plan to find the right GM and coach with the search committee.

Lakers had some "dysfunction" with Pelinka + Magic just 2 years ago in shocking fashion. Wow, Lakers are a mess! They win the championship a year later.

Remember MFFL's, big things are coming. *JET Larry O'Brien Tattoo Emoji*
I want to be fired too or at leeastt traded!  Big Grin

Now, that's a good point. Although, he's had to redevelop sources with teams before.

The way this happened isn't business as usual. Nothing wrong with being happy with guys being gone that you wanted out anyway. But no reason to make silly claims like "just the business of the NBA".

How often do you hear about the owner allowing buddies to wreck the organizational structure and do whatever he wants? The situation is not normal and was obviously a disaster...and, if Cuban can change enough so that a real GM will come, things could turn out for the better. You don't have to pretend "business as usual" to think that things can turn out for the better.
I just don't see it. Cuban is going to meddle even more now that his formerly trusted guys like Donnie and RC are now gone and they will be bringing in a new staff. The guy is a businessman, he is not going to give the keys and full control to someone he doesn't know very well. A big part of his GM search will be finding someone who will be okay with reporting to him for final decisions and involving him in the decision-making. That's probably going to eliminate a lot of the best candidates but that's just how it is under someone like Cuban or Jerry Jones.

In all of the business of the nba, there is someone gaining ground and someone losing ground. Rarely does a transaction lead to two sides gaining ground. The team that will end up with Carlisle will get better, at least the odds of it are high.

Cuban has a plan to find the right GM and coach with the search committee.

Fwiw, I believe it was MacMahon who described the institutional knowledge that is leaving with Donnie. For me, Cuban hiring an outside firm to search for a GM is concerning because I’m afraid he’s still a basketball outsider, and that Donnie was his 24 year insider. I realize there is other staff with connections and knowledge, but I still see it as a major blow. - and now hiring Dirk to help in the process I think adds evidence that Cuban is lost at sea. But he’s not without help, thankfully.

But when one door closes another opens, and it’s most important who he hires, not how he finds them. So my concern is probably overblown.

Very true. The Lakers are a good example of how a owner can lead with class and hire basketball people to do basketball things and make a nimble turnaround when you acquire the best player in the world. Mavs are 1 out of 2. Let’s make it 2/2 Mark!
Here is an interesting Clippers combo:

Chauncey Billups as head coach / Kenny Atkinson as the chief assistant

Another name with Mavs history, that could be interesting is Adrian Griffin, who was the top assistant under Nick Nurse for the Championship Raptors. Also worked five years on the Bulls with Thibs.

If Ujiri came here that might be an interesting name, since I doubt the Raports want to lose Nurse, too.

Also all his three kids play for elite colleges and Griffin Jr. is a projected top 10 pick next year, so clearly he developed them well individually.

Yeah, and lets trade for Tristan. At least Boston would be happy Smile
