James Jones loves to trade down.  Suns fans keep talking about a trade down.  They want a guy that can help now and trade down to draft another guy like Bane who can help now.

Would you do

18+DFS for 10?
18+Maxi for 10?

At 10, would you take Hayes or Vassell?

I do either of those trades if Hayes is available. I think I still do them for Vassell....but I am much more hesitant.

I am just not a fan of him.
He is a Wesley Johnson type of player, might turn into a better defender but I think players reliant only on their defense will have minimal success in this league unless you are a top 5 defender in this league.
Maybe he has the work ethic to prove me wrong, but I just don't feel it

Suns fans seem to be totally in love with Bane btw.
I will be a bit hesitant but I will probably pull the trigger

The cost of trading up is going to be real specific to each situation and how it impacts each team. The cost is also going to be "high" until draft night....then we will learn the true cost usually.

The only way to increase our asset chest is if someone really likes who can we pick with #18.

Oh, for sure. But it's interesting to know where the negotiations start, imo.

Agreed, and I think this is true in every scenario - trading up, trading down or trading out.
My final thoughts of what's going down tonight like 6 hours out...

Edwards #1
Bulls trade up to #2 with WCJ and another asset tbd and take Ball
Charlotte takes Wiseman at 3 and may wind up trading him to another team.
Warriors take Deni at 4.
Knicks trade up to 5 and take Haliburton.

Mavs predictions:

They trade 18 to OKC for Oubre or Gallo in a SNT.
31 and Wright/Powell for Danny Green in the Lakers deal that gets expanded.
If the Mavs don't make that trade I do think someone else jumps in on that deal. I don't think that stays 2 teams only.

The other option is Mavs deal both picks for someone that we weren't expecting or think that it would be enough.

I put it at about a 10% chance Mavs make and keep both picks tonight.

This is fairly realistic, though I highly doubt we'd see BOTH Powell and Wright come off of the books.

He's a good team defender and has all the tools to be a good on-ball defender. I really think he could be a solid 3&D starter for years to come.

Man, if I had a nickel...

I like Nesmith, too, but this is funny. So true.

Oubre and Green would be an awesome start to the offseason. Of course Wright+Powell will not make it. Would you do it with THJ+Wright? We need a defensive pest like DJJ to guard quick guard with MLE and we are set quite nicely.

Like I said, it's a gut feeling.  It's not like he's a terrible defender.  Watch how he communicates on the defensive end and then watch his mistakes and the effort he puts in on the floor.  He's willing and young.  I think the holes in his game are more so on the offensive end (rim finishing and passing).  I know you shouldn't fall in love with one guy, but here I am.

Aside, if New York is looking for more ammo to move up in the draft, I'd certainly offer 18 in exchange for what is owed in '23. The timing might not work out but I'd definitely have the conversation.

Sorry for the confusion. I was only suggesting the one in the Green trade. maybe you can get both but not likely. I think the more likely scenario would be to have THJ go back in the OKC trade if you did both. You could probably expand that to a 3 team deal and maybe get one of OKC picks back.

But OKC took Rubio back in a deal so I'm not necessarily convinced they won't take back more money if it means picks.
Gallo makes the most sense from both sides. They lose him for nothing if he just walks. So they get a pick back for taking on a contract that in reality doesn't hamper them one bit. You can entice them with cash too.
I don't think Wright is going to be the one that anyone cares about taking. Powell is the issue.
Count me in the camp of thinking Nesmith could be a neutral (or slight positive) defender in the NBA.

I'd say he could be good with his wing span, athleticism and effort.

I am not sure I see the footwork and lateral quickness for me to think he could be GOOD (note, I don't necessarily call many defenders "good"...I am thinking significantly above average).

Semantics I guess.  I don't think he'll ever be an elite defender but the toolbox is there to make his elite stroke a cut above and a more complete package than the likes of a JJ Redick.
