I would be SO pissed if the Warriors got Frank Ntilikina AND Vassell.

??? I mean, they have a #2 pick so this would actually be a bad day for them. Oh, you forgot the Oubre part

They don't do the second round, but I know who the best player available at 31 in that draft is, and you didn't even have to trade or buy up for him. Hampton and Tiger Bay would be a pretty great haul for the Mavs in this draft if they kept their picks.

When I see Hampton description (I admit, I didn't see him play) I see DSJ written all over him. Athlete with no real elite basketball skills.

Something about Hampton doesn't sit right with me either.

But at that range... Hmmm.

I would prefer Josh Green over RJ Hampton.  And if Tyler Bey slipped to 31 that would be outstanding.

I´m biased against the offensive-minded scoring leagues like China and Australia. Those are leagues that should be very forgiving to rookie flaws like not knowing how to run an offense, high turnovers or regularly missing defensive assignments. Therefore you should get on the floor and score the hell out of the basketball by nailing threes and driving to the hoop, if you have any sort of talent. Our own Dojo put up like 40/8/8 in China, while shooting 40% from three. If you can´t do it there at age 20, you are simply not a lottery talent.

Europe is a little different. If you are a starter and contributor in a top league at that age, then you basically know you got an NBA player. On the other hand you can´t hold it against a player, if the coach picks veterans over him, that know what they are doing. Especially when they all know you are a one year rental like Brandon Jennings for example.

And it seems to me a lot of Hampton´s minutes come in garbage time, too. I´d take a flyer on him at 31. Not that big a fan at 18.
Bey - that defense...

I rescind my Hampton enthusiasm. Thanks, guys.

He couldn't play with Luka, so he had to go. I'm sorry - if you can't prosper and be happy playing with Luka, you're not good at basketball. I just wish they would have gotten more for him in trade, or used the cap room more wisely.

It´s almost like it´s an advantage to have the quickness of a SG, but the length of a PF. Big Grin

He´s the perfect forward, because he can always stick his long arms in the passing lanes. Even when he gets beaten on the first step he has the length to recover and block shots. You change his wingspan from 7´1 to 6´6 and he gets scored on almost every play in that video.

I think he might be a stretch at #18, but I´m not convinced he lasts until the end of the 1st round. Trading #18 for #21+34+35 with Philly seems an interesting option.

Imho for our system he is one of the safest bets in this draft. His shot release isn´t the highest, but its looks steady and eh he´s playing with Luka and KP. He´ll always be open.

I completely agree - a reach at 18, would be great in the early 20s. Still hoping the Mavs can buy a pick in that range.

#26 should be attainable from the Celtics.

I don't really remember who this guy below is, but he looks way more skilled than Tiger Bay Smile

There's something to be said for scouting/drafting competence.

And there is something to be said that a portion of it is luck. Not the whole thing of course, but no one can predict exactly how the temperament, psychology, and work ethic of a player will or will not "take" in the NBA.

More than that, no team will get all order right, and you can miss a player with 1 spot.
For example, Kicks was praying for Curry in 2009, he picked one pick earlier and their next player on board was Hill rather than Derozan, rest is history

Mavs wanted Luka, but their 5th pick choice was WCJ, who is good but not a player to build around. If Kings were competent or Hawks not willing to trade, we would have been rebuilding till 2022 at earliest  Big Grin

Just depends on the player, really.

Agreed. I was just responding to SBJ's suggestion of the motive of not wanting the rookie deal (big honkin' banghead) to clutter cap. It hurts! It would be absolutely Vlade level for them not to have learned from the Giannis debacle.
This is it. Cuban has made some pretty dismissive comments about the draft over the years that completely reflect the way we have treated it for the better part of his 20 year ownership. Dumping our picks purely for cap relief would be the bone headed move that would have me concerned about our ability to probably build around Luka. We literally just dumped Harrison Barnes in order to go out and do close to zero in free agency. It was nowhere near a NY Knicks move, but it was certainly a poorly conceived one. If we have to free up space, we can to that at the TDL.

Huh.

The Mavs, for once, actually made the correct decision. They decided that they would not extend Barnes in the summer. So instead of running down the contract and lose him for nothing, they traded him for the 15th pick in the 2017 draft. That was good value. Unfortunately Jackson turned into a complete bust, but you do these trades a few times, you´ll nail one eventually.
Disagree, at least on the execution if not the actual trading of Barnes. Jackson was in no way shape of form good value, and ultimately had very little to do with the trade IMO. They made that trade for the same reason the Knicks traded KP for what they did (to much lesser consequence of course). That being to free up cap space for 2019 FA. In both situations, both teams could have gotten much better returns if there had not been a stipulation that the return free up cap space at the end of that season. I have less issue with actually trading Barnes, but more with the execution. I'd bet my house they would have got much better offers for Barnes in returned assets that they passed over because of the expiring contract requirement. I know hindsight is everything, and if they had snagged a top FA like Walker it would have been a great move, but the plan and execution has to be judged on the result.
When you think about it, they traded Barnes for Jackson, Wright and Boban.

Definitely not great. But I don't know that we're looking at this in 5 years banging our heads, either.

Boban was a BAE signing. Wright was traded using the TE so it's more like Jackson, Wright and WCS were traded for Barnes. It was a pretty awful trade.
