For me the 2nd round pick is bothersome because it is still a talent chip that is being given away.  Be it those chips are used to draft or for trades for more long term solutions . The same thing applies to first round picks too. They hit on a very high pick but in general their approach to drafts seem like they look at it as not really going to give them much.

We can talk all about the Kliebers and DFS of this world but when we flame out the excuse as usual will be what did you expect RC to do with undrafted talent and that it is Donnie’s fault. Next year again when criticizing picks we will be told how the draft is a crapshoot and the Mavs have developed some undrafted talent. Seems to be the same story over and over again.

Yes. Maybe the draft is a crapshoot. But teams do value picks which is why they usually don’t give those up to get older players who are at best a stop gap solution.

...they used it for a trade though. Like you said. And, they COULDN'T use it to draft a player without dumping someone like Hinton.
I don't like a lingering injury on a 36 year old player , but as far as his shooting drop goes it seems  like there is a pretty clear story here of a vet player who got off to an ice cold start of the year (likely not helped by the season starting 2 months earlier than everyone expected) and then starts seeing reversion back to his career mean over time.  If he's just compleley washed up as a shooter I don't  know why he suddenly stopped being washed up in February.

Monthly Splits

DEC (108 MP) - .286 3P%, .457 TS%
JAN  (212 MP) -  .304 3P%, .525 TS%
FEB (209 MP) -  .468 3P%, .621 TS%
MAR (48 MP) - .444 3P%, .748 TS%

Yeah, I'll admit that when examining a rental it's not ideal to start off with a pre-existing injury. Every day that goes by without Redick on the bench lowers the potential for return on what you paid. But, I'm hoping for the best.
I was listening to the Ringer draft podcasts under Bill Simmons feed (4 total episodes)

Part 2- They talk a little about Redick.  All three seemed to like the trade as a small upgrade
Part 3- Surprisingly they liked Melli being added as well

JJ Barea born June 26, 1984
JJ Reddick born June 24, 1984

Geez, we should of stuck with younger old veteran than the older veteran player.

Of course there is DP, but wasn't Stevenson a filler? I'm sure there are more examples, but my caffeine levels have not yet gotten up to normal operating levels.

My point is that Melli may surprise, especially if he gets more comfortable around Luka, KP and other international players.

DeShawn was the post-Finals Party MVP.

The Mavs did say they wanted a youth movement.

I have no idea what he's so mad about.
We are the Olive Garden of the NBA. Doesn’t JJ know this?

We don´t know what the Mavs told/promised him when they traded for him.
He's also been out for some time with a personal/family problem, so might be having a rough time of it.

I had edited immediately as I knew someone would misunderstand. I can live with it if it is giving up a pick for at least the chance for a long term solution even if it does not work out. For eg Fournier.  He might leave or might resign. But at least they target him as a long term piece. Here we are giving up a chip for a short term measure that is not really taking us to the next level.

He was very invested in the team when he was here.  For a player who obviously was always connected with his teammates this is a tough thing to deal with.  Wish him luck in NO.
I think it’s important to realize that while as fans it’s almost natural to see all of these guys simply as chess pieces to be moved around, but they are all real people with real emotions. It would really suck to be in a position where you could never really put down roots or know where you stand, even if you are made extremely wealthy to put up with that inconvenience.

I’m not ever going to fault the team for doing what they think is best, but I’ll always try to acknowledge that there’s another side so I empathize with the players. Just think back to the last time Devin Harris was trades and how much that tore him up.

Well said. I didn't think that Johnson would be torn up about being traded, given the situation the Mavs were in and how his contract was currently structured, made him a likely trade asset.

In any case I wish him nothing but the best.
