We can't trade 2025 unless we gave something to the knicks to lift the protections.

I'm guessing late first round at best.  That's because he has already burned two of his "cheap" years with not a lot to show for it, a pick is more versatile as the team has more control of who it ends up being, and a pick is easier to use in other trades.  My guess would be that most teams would prefer to have our late 22 vs Green, but I could be wrong.

Ya, I thought about saying it as low first rounder. My thought is he's a guy that showed marked improvement with increased load from season 1 to 2 (more games, 4 more mpg and almost doubled most of his numerical stats...including TOs and Fouls...unfortunately). That shows something to me, but like you, not sure it says anything to an NBA FO. I figured someone else would be able to see that too and value it a bit higher than others and all it takes is 1 that has something we want.

At some point Mavs will have to go all in if they will want to build a true contender.

I agree, like after next year's draft when we don't have to trade draft picks so far out into the future that we have no players under contract.  5 years is an entirety in the NBA.  Think of where this team was in 2012 vs 2017 vs today....trading 2024 and 2026 picks in the middle of Luka's giant contract (and Dorians and hopefully Brunsons) is an all in move that doesn't create a worst case scenario, just got to wait one season.

I think the problem is, you can't really choose when the opportunity happens. If it is this offseason, you go for it. If (for example) Beal says he wants to be traded to Dallas, you pull the trigger, not ask him to wait till 2023.

Besides, with each passing year Mavs will be more desperate and every seller will know that - prices will go up.

Beal is bad example but the point is right. You have to have the right timing.

There is no go up after all-in. ?

Of course there are (very few) exceptions to be made but the chances of that are sooooooooo slim they aren't even worth acknowledging in my opinion.  Because our assets are so slim someone would have to basically say I'm not playing anywhere but Dallas on top of being worth completely mortgaging our future for him and committing to playing with that player and Luka and nothing but vet mins and draft picks the rest of the way.  There are maybe 5-10 guys in the league you make that exception for but I feel we suggest using these picks on guys like Jerami Grant and Rudy Gobert which is absolutely not worth it in my opinion.  There will always be disgruntled stars to go after, the cycle always repeats itself, I have no problem trusting that.

Again, we have 2022, 2027, 2029 and with little creativity 2025 pick. Plenty of expiring contracts if needed. I reject the notion our assets are slim. This was the only remark I had initially on a comment that our best asset is a 2022 pick. I actually think this asset is relatively weak. I only mentioned Beal as an example.

Mavs can and should aim high. The question is, if this is a sound strategy. Mavs have a vast history of aiming high and hitting nothing. Can the new management do it more successfully?

(04-21-2022, 10:00 AM)StrandedOnBeauboisHill Wrote: [ -> ]committing to playing with that player and Luka and nothing but vet mins and draft picks the rest of the way.

Not sure what is your point. Mavs have 110 mil worth of contracts not named Luka on the roster with hopefully renewed Brunson contract coming. No trade for a star or any player will take that away. We will have plenty of other players and contracts left.

There will also always be 29 teams competing for the service of that one or two disgruntled star that appear on the market. Which brings me again to the question, is it smarter to wait with all-in for that disgruntled star that will want to go to Dallas or is it more sound to upgrade with a couple of quality players instead (like Turner/Gobert example you made). I think Luka deserves the team to be maximally aggressive in building the contender. There was basically no upgrade in six transfer windows, two of them with max cap space.

I agree with this statement but I disagree on how maximally aggressive should be defined.  The mavs fans also deserve a front office that doesn't recklessly mortgage our future.  Do you not acknowledge that trading picks that far out has MAJOR risks associated with it?

Also, my point on "slim assets" referred to our basketball assets outside of DFS/Luka/Brunson which I think is being viewed as the core of this roster moving forward.
I appreciate how the Lakers went "all-in" over the past couple of years.

Maybe the Mavs can emulate their team-building plan.

you appreciate how the Lakers owe their '22, '23, and '24 1st round picks to the Pelicans? They failed to make the Play In this year and don't get a lottery pick to show for it. They are in complete tear down and rebuild mode. If this ever happens, Luka is gone. Or is this sarcasm?

I agree with this to some degree, but there are not that many guys out there that I seriously consider giving up my 27 and 29 picks for, and I don't think Beal is one of them.  I think he is kind of overrated and will likely cost more than he is actually worth.

Also, this does not feel like a desperate team.  It feels like a team that is slowly getting better (despite some significant offseason failures) and needs one more quality good fitting piece (and an owner willing to spend the tax) to be a contender.
