2020-2021 ROSTER TALK: Archived

I dunno but making your team clearly worse doesn't seem like the answer to playoff disappointment.

Listening to Bobby Marks at the end of the Lowe podcast today was pretty depressing.  Some talking heads out there just feel there is no market but he mentioned Orlando with a package around Harris/Ross/Denver pick from the Gordon trade which includes 20 mil in expiring and a future asset which I think would help us get a third team involved.

I also started thinking about a year of Harris vs giving THJ 75 mil right now or Ross for that matter at like 24 million over the next two years.  Ross at 12 a year actually feels very reasonable as someone to bring off the bench in our backcourt and is also a good defender (his shooting numbers could be better but he'd get open looks here) and then you could send Harris/pick to Indy with Maxi/our pick/Brunson or whatever it would take to try to nab Turner or Brogdon.

KP next to Jonathan Isaac would make a lot of sense and it's not like that team is going to be luring free agents anytime soon.

Yep, ORL is a team that makes sense as a trade partner. Thanks for this.

One of the names that we haven´t mentioned at all: Kelly Olynyk. Averaged 19/8/4 on a bad Rockets team. Shooting 54.5/39.2/84.4.
Heat clearly underrated his impact. They tried to replace him with a vet min guy like Dedmon and it backfired.

He needs to add upper and lower body strength and work on his postgame instead of camping out at the 3 pt line. He's capable of doing both, like the great Nowitski.

I believe the exact opposite. KP needs to go back to operating like a wing on offense and be like a weak-side shot blocker on defense paired to a real center. And no more post-ups ever.

Given that he skipped his exit interview I would put his chances of being a Mav at 0%. The only way he opts-in is bc Duffy works out a trade that is suitable for both parties.

Starters:                      Bench:

PG Luka (33 mins)      Brunson (15)
SG Rubio (24)              THJ (24)
SF DGreen (24)            DFS (24)
PF RoCo (32)                Maxi (16)
C  Nurkic (32)              Powell (16)

I have been on board with the RoCo/Nurkic idea (DJJ would also be incoming I think for salary matching). I also like Rubio but he would be coming off the bench because THJ needs to play with Luka for shooting. I'd like D. Green if you can get him for MLE but I would alternatively take the best wing you can get for the MLE if you can't get DG.

So the roster to me would be more like:

Luka/Rubio
THJ/Brunson/Green
DFS/FA wing (D. Green or best you can get)/DJJ
Roco/Maxi
Nurkic/Powell

That's a roster I can get behind.

Is that considered a walk?...
Josh Green is a top 5 Mavs player...

I am glad we are back on Rubio watch. Pure passer. Good all around bball player. Mentor to Luka. Not a shooter but he would be your bench ball mover which we absolutely don't have.

Mavs can get a better package than that. I do like Ross as a separate target. Harris doesn't do anything for me nor does a late Denver pick. I would rather keep grumpy KP if thats the best offer we can get.

Last summer the Pacers were willing to trade Myles Turner for Gordon Hayward on a max contract, who came off a nerve-damage injury to his leg. So we have almost a perfect match on what kind of player value the Pacers attach to Myles Turner. Now all you need to do is find a trade partner interested in Porzingis. Washington is clearly that.

Turner/Lamb to Dallas
Porzingis to Washington
Bertans/Gafford/Avdija/15th pick to Indiana.

IT IS DONE. No drama.

I could see this happening depending on how much the Mavs desire Turner.

I like Lauri okay but I'd rather spend money on a playmaking guard type.

Definitely think he can be a defensive plus on a winning team.

Me too. He’s one of the few players I’ve paid to watch. But since he’s not a FA, how do you suppose we get him?

Would J Rich opting in combined w one of our 2-way’s get it done?

Several trade options that may or may not include using some cap space. I think he will be gettable without giving up much.

Dude is exactly what we're looking for in a center. It actually makes me quite sad because I don't think the Mavs will actually acquire him.

I wouldn't count him out just yet considering he will be inexpensive to obtain and would fit great next to Luka. Dude plays hard, sets huge screens, rebounds, protects the pain, rolls to the rim. He is also a guy that won't complain if you only play him 20 minutes one night because of the matchups. I would not sleep on this idea just yet.

One idea we need to circle back to is TJ McConnell. Pacers only have early bird rights on him. Big time assist per minute guy and nice mid-range game like JJB. Not an outside shooter but he would be a guy relieving Luka so that's not as critical as the guys who are paired in Luka's lineups. I would actually put him pretty high on the list, he is one of the best assist guys you are going to find for the money. I bet he is MLE level or below.

I think if you go this route you get Gary Harris (the latest iteration of JRich/DWright), but you also get WCJr.

You save $4mm.  Maybe you get a pick (I'd prefer the worst of Orlando's two picks in 2023, but I can see using 2021 draft capital in a trade also).  You get a one year try out for Harris and about as much productivity as you got from the position in 2020/21 and you get a young rim runner who can rebound (DRB% is 24 for his career).  I know Carlisle can figure out how to use Carter.  Not nearly as sure he can figure out how to use KP.  Maybe THJ makes sense as a starter if DFS moves to the four.  Maybe you can do that with Carter where it didn't work with KP.  Then, you use $20mm on someone who can shoot and defend (since you are working with $38mm instead of $34mm).

Orlando becomes relevant again and as you point out, there isn't a better compliment to KP than Isaac (I'll take the under on the number of seasons they both stay healthy all year).  It's not like Harris is a prize or WCJ played well after arriving in ORL.  At least KP puts butts in the seats.
