***QUESTION FOR THE BOARD***

You have your choice between Christian Wood and KP and you can only sign one of them for 25 million

Who would you pick and why?

My initial reaction is that Korver has nothing left.

Yet shooting never really goes away. Mavs desperately need that.
In case the NBA, teams and the NBPA agree on an 18th roster spot. What are the Mavs looking for? Will it be a two-way slot? If not can team absorb an additional player in a trade?

Some interesting options:

Courtney Lee
Troy Daniels
Andrew Roberson
Ryan Broekhoff (two-way)
DeMarre Carroll
Ersan Ilyasova
Dewayne Dedmon
Yogi Ferrell
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
Rondae Hollis-Jefferson
Mario Hezonja
Noah Vonleh
John Henson
Tyler Zeller
Emmanuel Mudiay
Alonzo Trier (two-way)
Skal Labissiere
Chris Clemons (two-way)
TJ Leaf (two-way)
Admiral Schofield (two-way)
Zhaire Smith (two-way)
Paul Eboua (two-way)

I think the best will sign with contenders. Both LA teams, the Nets, Bucks, Celtics, 76ers. Mavs probably pick someone that already knows the system. If vets are eligible my money is on Courtney Lee. Not sure if they are even interested in another two-way player.
I still want....

Not sure if a guy that is under contract in Monaco would be willing to sign a two-way deal in the NBA. That´s why I ignored players that are under contract in europe.
If we include international players Mirotic is probably the best unsigned free agent.

Wood continues to be a prime example of the stupidity of missing on talent upgrades because MBT is always chasing the big fish.

Cuban can say their powder staying dry was just a coincidence all he wants but he's full of it.  They didn't learn from all their previous blunders and wasting the end of Dirk's career and they're doomed to repeat the same mistakes.

Who knows if Wood could have been had but for the sake of argument lets just say he would have come here.  He goes out and puts up 20/10 while KP is out and all of the sudden you have the option of dealing from a position of strength and using KP or Wood to go land that secondary creator next to Luka.

Instead you have some expirings, no headliner, mortgaging your draft capital and of course plan powder as your only avenues for improvement.

If Wood is a Mav the trade options that open up are huge.  But he is a Rocket...putting up great numbers...and here we sit with one last offseason before this roster gets fairly locked up.

I don’t have a real attachment to wood as a player one way or the other. But I wholeheartedly agree with the part about the Mavs asset management. We should still be in the talent gathering phase. Especially young talent. As we’ve seen you can always flip that for a better fitting piece later. But you have to have it first.

I 100% agree with this. But, I'm not sure the Mavs' approach to free agency is the battleground on which to stage that fight.

Personally, I was expecting them to trade one or both draft picks to somehow facilitate the adding of a high-profile, older veteran who had a chance to make a huge difference THIS YEAR. This isn't necessarily what I wanted them to do, but it's what I expected, so I spent the off-season trying to decide who my preferred target could be from that, specific pool of potential additions. (For the record, I was right - Hayward would've been the best option, by far, and I still think Rubio would've been great here)

But, not only did the Mavs not trade the picks, they ADDED another early second rounder. To me, that was an indication that the front office agrees with you. They also believe they should be in the acquiring young talent phase. We can argue all day about the how relatively successful we think the specific details of their recent approach has been, but I was pleasantly surprised by how intelligent the macro view of their strategy was, and feel a strong urge to give them healthy credit for that.

I don't think they've done much wrong since drafting Luka, really. Hindsight will always offer up good second guesses of major decisions, but I firmly believe their goals and method have been in line with reality. Like @"Kammrath" said the other day, the margin of improvement from where the team ended last season to "true contender" status is the most difficult growth to achieve, by far (once you have a Luka in place).

I agree with pretty much everything you said. I think the Mavs are one of the most well run and well coached teams in the league. And I was actually pretty happy with their off-season. like I said I don’t really have any real attachment to wood. I wasn’t disappointed that we didn’t sign him. I just think the Mavs need to get better at buying in free agency and flipping in trades. And I have no doubt that Donnie and cubes are turning over every rock looking for every possible opportunity to make the team better. Hopefully they’ll be able to make something happen before or at the deadline this year. I’ve just got my fingers crossed that it’s not for some journeyman in his 30s or big name who is completely washed. Whatever assets we have left I want to trade for a player who’s at least on a similar timeline as Luka and KP.

Word.
(01-27-2021, 04:17 PM)haveitall Wrote: [ -> ]KP has been very predictable.  He will either take that low percentage three 1 ft behind the line with a hand in his face. He will post up or face up and shoot or will drive.  When Dirk had the ball he would give a series of fakes and feel out the defense.  KP makes up his mind and does something irregardless of the defense.  He needs to feel out the defense.  Doncic on the other hand is super dynamic, everything he does on the court is 2 moves ahead.  Sometimes when I watch him and he does something I wonder why go there its crowded and 2 seconds later a lane forms and he has an easy layup.

I'm probably a day behind in responding, but did anyone notice how many mid-range shots Dirk took? Even pump faking at the 3pt line to take a dribble and two steps to get in rhythym for a better shot. Luka's got some of that and KP needs to learn it.

Kinda like the 2021 version of Peja?

Peja was worth it for this dunk alone. Sign Korver up!

.....

Who knows if Wood could have been had

These ongoing whines that the Mavs screwed up by not getting Wood are simply off base.

The price Houston paid was definitely not one the Mavs could have beaten, if they had wanted to. There were multiple moving pieces - trade assets, trade match, and salary for Wood - and the Mavs didn't have a real way to outbid Houston in any of it. So the criticism about they didn't get him, that's totally gratuitous.

'But the Mavs should have gotten him anyhow, and now they'd have a better roster by wanting him bad enough.' That's not how it works.
I haven't seen anyone talking about Beal wanting out of Washington and what teams could make moves to get him (Including Us)

thats a lateral move in my eyes.
I'd do that deal. Beal gets you 35 points a night.
(01-29-2021, 09:02 PM)SleepingHero Wrote: [ -> ]thats a lateral move in my eyes.

KP's trade value is probably at an all-time low right now.  He'll get better and as someone else mentioned, the dude hasn't really had a healthy offseason to work on his craft.  He's also a few years younger than Beal.  Beal's said all the right things about being committed to Washington even if he admits losing is hard.

I don't think there is a deal to be made to swap the two but I'd do it.  I really like KP and have been impressed by his maturity, but I think it's easier to 60-70% of what he offers by signing a player at a much more affordable contract than it would be to try to do the same thing with Beal.  It also eliminates the health concerns.  That said, even if that deal was on the table I'd put money on the MBT not pulling the trigger.

The downside is that you'd be punting on this season as our iffy 4/5 rotation would be upgraded from troublesome to horrible.

Anyone in the world except for Washington fans and and Washington team officials. That would be my guess.
