Yup and I bet they told him look this is what we can do. We can't guarantee you a spot but we will give you a guaranteed vet min deal for everything you have done.

You really think there is an option they waive #18 pick Smile

No that isn't what I am saying. If he isn't ready then it means you keep the extra SF not JJB.

I am sure the Mavericks have something else up there sleeve

Just does not make sense that they are done

Bingo.

MBT:  JJ, come join our staff.
JJB:  I think I still have a little left in the tank.
MBT:  We'll sign you but you have to earn a spot.

What's the 2nd year of Iwundu's contract look like?

The other thing is that Mavs have lots of contracts they can move at the TDL should they want to shuffle anyone on the roster. Doesn't mean they will make a giant trade but it makes any type of trade easier.

Then Townsend tweets about Iwundu and the article he wrote makes 0 sense Big Grin

Barea hasn't signed yet, maybe Townsend is on the wrong track. Source told him Barea will likely be back. Wouldn't someone else report it at some point. Or he gets signed and waived after training camp -> joins coaching staff

That they keep Barea and cut Iwundu or any other guy?

Oh, I see.

A) I don't think that's likely. I really wouldn't worry about it.

B) If anyone does get cut in favor of Barea, my first thought will be "there must be something really wrong with that player."

I think that, if what we think we know is true right now about the 16 contracts, then this is probably a way for them to keep Barea around through the end of camp while they try to convince him to stay as a coach.

I don't think Iwundu has very much to do with Allen's readiness. I think the Mavs want a stable of young/inexpensive guys that they've had success developing and that could lead to parting ways with DFS a lot less painful.

Even if JJB makes the team, he shouldn't touch the ball except in garbage time. Brunson should get as many minutes as possible to build hip his trade value. Depending on the standing, we'll be really aggressive at the TDL.

Thank God 2nd year is a team option.  I was about to go on my soap box again.

Yeah, you guarantee an extra contract cause you want to pay the guy, not because you want a competitive camp. Non-guarantees gets you competitive. JJ just collecting a bonus. Good for him.

Score one for thinking, and not reacting.

Either WCS or Kleber. Or Powell, if he's healthy enough.

Maxi against smaller teams and Johnson against bigger teams would be my guess.

Also Rick might experiment. I think he likes to rotate guys to gather analytics and then make decisions later on based on he certain lineups fared.

I’m genuinely confused how they navigate 16 guaranteed contracts?

- is it really as simple as we can just cut someone?

Barea can still play imo, but he’s not better than Brunson. Not even close at this point. Is he better than Terry? Sure, maybe, but why would we give up on Terry’s potential after just training camp? Seems crazy for a guy you’d pick at #31.

I can see this as Barea vs. one more wing. One of the wings is going to have to prove they are more valuable than Barea, or Barea is going to have to prove to himself that he is done playing in the nba. If it’s the latter, he will graciously take the coaching job knowing he gave it everything he had. He will get the guaranteed money like said by the poster above to come in and mentor/coach.

So I expect Barea to become a coach, but I’ll also never count out the heart of a champion. And I don’t think Donnie would either. So they are giving him a realistic shot.

I agree Barea earned his final contract and he gets to fight for a roster spot...If he doesn't make the team Cuban will probably give him his choice of jobs...hopefully it is to mentor Terry...

Josh Green is a top 5 Mavs player...

I am late to the Gobert party, but few things.

-I doubt Mavs are locked on KP as 5, and even if they are they can change their mind. RC learns and can be flexible.

-KP has injuries concerns as discussed before.

-With GSW dynasty over, and Rockets experiment leading to be the unrecognized 2nd best team in the league few years ago and then downhill, the league is actually starting to get bigger, not smaller.

-If AD had Mcgee and DHoward playing 5 with him, I don't see why KP won't eb able to coexist with Gobert.

-For me, most importantly. it is about defense.
I generally believe that defense is just like offense, you go as far as your best player. yes it is team concept etc, but most good defensive team had at least one or two recognized All NBA defensive player, or DPOY

Lakers last year? DHoward 3 DPOY, AD was top 3 candidate, while Rondo (4) and Green (1) were All NBA defensive teams before. Lebron (6)

Raptors: Gasol and Kawhi were DPOY , Ibaka was 3 times All NBA defensive teams

GSW: Green is DPOY, Klay was NBA all defensive teams once and Iggy twice.

Cavs: (Not much, except for Lebron)

Spurs: Duncan and Kawhi , no need to say more.

Miami: Wade and Lebron who had multiple all defensive teams.

Mavs: Tyson (DPOY) with Kidd (multiple defensive team)

-It is true that Mavs have KP who is good defender and say he wants to be DPOY in the future, but he was lower than Luka in All NBA defensive team voting -for whatever wtf reason- and he might never be that guy in the future.

If the Mavs don't see KP as that elite defender, who can lead you to a championship type of defense, then I am all for Gobert

PS: I am not advocating for him, but I just don't see how people are very dismissive of this idea. If the Mavs get him in FA, I would still be happy though not for the max

I’m good with everything the Mavs have done this offseason.

As we have seen with so many teams with young superstars, making mistakes is worse than making no moves at all. Mavs have managed to get better in the short-term and not hurt themselves at all in the long-term.

Depending on the TDL, which I expect us to be major players in, next offseason should be fun. We'll have a ton of space and after the draft is complete, we'll be down to one owed FRP not to mention we'll be down to one negative contract (DP at 2YR $11M per). We'll have decision to make on THJ, Richardson and Brunson.
