2020-2021 ROSTER TALK: Archived

He'll learn. I just hope the Mavs get their crap together before he does.

KP's got to ask out this offseason.  I know we bemoan his dwindling trade value but from his perspective, we are killing his career earning potential not to mention his legacy of a player.  I'd be shocked if he's on the team next year.

DFS was definitely the non-Luka MVP of the series.  THJ picked a bad time to cool off but was the third best player.  Really disappointed in Brunson, his game 6 was really bad.

And for the final time, our Seth Curry trade was atrocious.

Curse of Cuban continues to be real.  I'd be more empathetic to Luka if he could actually make his free throws.

Hopefully the roster looks much, much different next year.

New idea: Sign Chandler Parsons to a vet min deal so he can teach Luka the art of recruiting.

Took me 3/4 of the season to get there, but I'm 100% with you on this. I hope I never have to watch Richardson play for my team ever again.

Seth for JRich was a big miss. And giving big money to Danny Green, Pat Beverley, or Jae Crowder would have been bad too considering the other holes this team would still have. Yes, the defense has been bad the last 2 years and needs to improve. But no way am I sacrificing offensive talent for defense right now. Improving the overall defense will require years and years of roster re-shaping. We have to be patient there.

So let's keep that in mind as we consider potential signings and trades. There are some good defensive guys out there but if the offense doesn't get better, we could see their defensive impact be limited.

I think Crowder just wanted years but we had to be cute with preserving future cap space.  He was great for the Suns in their closeout game against the Lakers.  That's my long winded way of saying, I wouldn't have hated to have him on the team for the Clippers Series.

Agree with you on the defensive rebuild but we really need to get a big who is a vacuum on the boards and someone that can be a semblance of secondary playmaking.  Both of these things to help take pressure off of Luka for having to do everything out there.  He's just worn out by the time the 4th quarters roll around.

The other for me is we are two years into the KP era and I feel like there was no progress this year.  Nothing was built of last year of finding areas on the court where he is comfortable and then building secondary moves off that.    I felt like we haven't even tried mostly as thinking of him as our second best player.   If he is a fit here for a year, 5 years or 10  years, you would think you would put in the best situation and not limit him to 7 shots in a playoff game.    Are you telling me no one else can get a really good player out of him?   Injuries and personality may always be a problem, but they are setting themselves up to fail if that is how they use him.

Both of the above really disappoints me.

Of players that have really improved their value, is THJ, Maxi, DFS, Brunson, during the Luka era. All of them have developed and improved their name status in this league. Brunson has been great in regular season, but not ready for playoff minutes yet. He needs more experience. THJ and DFS have had their best career years under Luka, and so has Maxi for the most part, he is signifiantly better after Luka came. After covid this season, he never recovered his game as last season.

Who has regressed. KP.

Biggest need is someone on roster who can get his own shot with better measurables than Fred Sanford.

It's a rare day when we are in lockstep, but here we are.

Hard to say he's regressed when he gets little opportunity to shine offensively.

Any chance they could add Dinwiddie and Dougie Buckets?
Dinwiddie would fill the second creator role and Dougie adds another shooter who showed decent driving ability when I watch the Pacers.

Going thru FAs.. Guys in no particular order that I'd like to sign

Collins, Lowry, Schroeder, Holmes, Powell, Barton, OPJ, Batum, Green, Reggie Jackson

Trade targets in no order
Siakam, Kuzma, Taurean Prince, either of the Cleveland guards if they decide to move one, Buddy, Turner/Sabonis (Indy has to make a move this summer IMO), Rozier, Covington (if Portland shakes things up), McCollum, Lavine, Kemba if Richardson opts in with Powell and other cap filler,

Mainly guards that can take pressure off Luka and create offense and wing defenders.

If I were running this team, there would be a lot I'd want to do with the roster right now, but adding a potential DPOY at center would be pretty damn high on my list.

Please tell me we’re gunning for Turner.

They should pursue him & Mitchell Robinson.

Agreed. I'm not sure of the fit with KP tho and frankly I still prefer KP to Turner overall. We definitely need defense more than offense but its a decent step down in offense between the 2 and Turner isn't a good rebounder either.

I may be in the minority on their value differences. but I don't think Indy would want KP due to Sabonis already there. Kind of creates the same problem they'd be trading turner for.

...and if not one of them, move on to Richaun Holmes.

...and on down the list.

A good defense begins with a good defensive center. In 2021, that means a guy who's strong AND fast AND quick AND fierce. In Dallas, with Luka, it would be nice if they could also shoot of the catch, handle hot passes while rolling, make decisions off of the short roll or even all of the above.

1. Running it back makes little sense. A MLE level guy is not enough to transfer this team into a contender.
2. 34 mil of cap space by renouncing THJ, JRich, WCS, Redick, Melli and Bobi is not enough to really build a better team using just cap space, since top free agents resigned with their teams long ago. If we could add an elderly statesmen like Lowry and keep team as it is it would be great, but there is not enough cap space.
3. Mavs have quite successfully tanked values of everyone not named Luka other than perhaps DFS (realistically 5th starter on a contender) and THJ (realistically 6th man). Playoff Brunson showed he is hardly more than back-up PG at this stage, trade value of rookies is close to zero, Maxi had a horrible offseason, JRich had a bad season, Powell is way overpaid and Burke is a vet min guy. And then of course there is the KP situation.

There are so many things this team needs, basically players who can shoot, defend and put the ball on the floor. Players who can pull the wagon on Luka off or rest nights.

There are a gazillion ways to improve the team, but MBT will really have to be creative to improve the team in the short term. Or perhaps we will just need to be more patient. Add FA with most upside (probably Collins) and build the supporting cast over next two seasons.

I think you could turnover most of this roster. Guys do have value with KP being the biggest trade chip. THJ is a tough call for me. He didn't show up when we really need him to. I worry locking him up with just lock us into mediocrity.

Crowder is looking like a true difference maker. He is a legit championship piece and would have been exactly what we needed.
