2020-2021 ROSTER TALK: Archived

I would take Nance over Drummond every day. Unfortunately he's an actual asset and would cost much more than Drummond.

I listened to a Cavs podcast that detailed Drummond's tenure on the Cavs and how they felt now that its coming to a close. The general feeling was Drummond is just severely overpaid, and if he was paid 10-15 million he'd be seen as one of the better big men in the league. Further, if Drummond was confined to a more simple role that didn't include a multitude of post ups, he'd be akin to a type of Zubac/Valanciunas type. Which is pretty interesting.

The Osman for Powell piece seems more fair financially.  He'd be on a very reasonable contract if he was any good.  He'd be a total projection here having never played on a very good team outside of his rookie season when he was decent in limited minutes.  Still, if this slot is destined to be the backup SF, would you rather have Osman at $8mm or THJ in the mid-teens

I wouldn't risk trading away THJ, even if I like Osman. I'd rather just add Terry as well as another 2nd and take him on than give away THJ like that.

None of the legit contenders can or will give up anything for Drummond,so you can buy him out of trade him for minimum gain, like high 2nd and some cap relief. That's really it. Or you have to stick out your middle fingers to the vultures.

Sure seems like its reported that he's "expected" to go to the Nets.

"A source with knowledge of the Mavericks’ thinking suggested Kevin Love as a much better fit given the team’s 3-point woes and desire to surround MVP candidate Luka Doncic with shooters. Love would also help boost Dallas’ problematic defensive rebounding metrics. Still, the Mavericks have two appealing expiring contracts — Tim Hardaway Jr. ($18 million) and James Johnson ($16 million) — that would help facilitate a deal."

Sounds pretty much like a made-up rumor. No way I would give up THJ, you are just spinning your wheels at that point. They would have to take back Powell but I might give up one of our rookie prospects. The idea this TDL is what can you add without taking away from our top 7 players to raise the ceiling of this team.

Huh.....?

Why in the world would the Mavs trade THJ+Johnson for Love who is injured?

Don't get me wrong I think Love is a good player, but he doesn't really fit alongside KP at all. And neither one of them are coming off the bench. Not to mention Love is a pretty poor defender.

Powell and Johnson for Love works and keeps Dallas $800k under the tax.

It obviously takes you out of Free Agency in the summer.  Who might be available who would be better than Love?  It isn’t just better than Love though because you have to move someone other than Powell (THJ or JRich) to get space.

Off the top of my head in no particular order:
1. Oladipo
2. Lowry
3. DeRozan
4. Kawhi (likely to decline his option)
5. CP3 (unlikely to decline his option)
6. Conley (debatable)

Then you have a bunch of role players that individually aren't better than Love as a player, but as a fit they'd be much better on the Mavs.

Ya I don't like being that close to the tax line. I like Gallo and Hield options better.

According to Cleveland.com's Chris Fedor on Saturday, the Timberwolves have "aggressively" pursued Nance since the offseason. The Sixers, Celtics, Heat, Mavs and Pelicans are also reportedly interested.

Fedor noted that while Nance isn't expected to be traded before the deadline unless the Cavs get "completely blown away" by an offer, teams have expressed more interest in him than any of their other players who are believed to be available.

Among the offers the Cavaliers reportedly received was a package including "multiple late-first-round picks."

aka Jeff Schwartz. It reads like a sales pitch for his client.

BTW, I've suspected for years that Love actively wants to play in Dallas. He always has glowing things to say about the Mavs. And for the right price in the trade, I'm in. Free agency is just one way to build a winning roster.

Regarding Powell+Johnson, I think that's a good start for discussion. For enough cap relief, I wonder what Cleveland might be willing to tip Dallas in the deal.

I know ppl here won't like it but I don't hate it.

KP, Burke for Kemba, Robert Williams, F Grant Williams and two BOS first round picks. I definitely like the 2 first round picks part of the deal.

He would be awesome with Luka in the pick and roll.....but don't want anything to do with Kemba.

It is just one first round pick and yeah, I don't like it Smile Both Williams guys are nothing special, I don't think there is very high ceiling there. Kemba might be higher injury risk than KP and is playing worse. So I have quite a trouble seeing how this deal would be good for Mavs.

I hope the Mavs are in every ridiculous rumor and most importantly in the ones that make it look like we are keeping KP and adding players to he and Luka.

Those teams thinking of low balling the Mavs for KP will have to pay up to acquire him.  Mavs need to be blown away by the offer, not a "poor fit" dump.  You only get to trade a "unicorn/uniraffe" once. (If you trade him at all)

Donnie is famous to say he is interested in every player. I guess that's why Mavs are in every rumor.

I have a philosophical dilemma. Is it really worth spending the rare few assets we have on a good rotation player like Nance? Would it move the needle for us? Sure PF is the weakest position we have. KP, Kleber, Nance would fit nicely in whatever combination you put them on court and would take most PF and C minutes (no harm if you reduce WCS and Powell minutes).

But I am more inclined to either go all in on a third star if available or just stay put and preserve the assets for later. Perhaps just trade Johnson more or less straight up for someone who will be expiring next season. It is always handy to have an expiring contract.

I'd like a flier on Drummond even more so if it sends out Powell but I love Larry Nance.  Surprised he's available.

Kevin Love has always felt like an MBT move to me.  If you can ditch Powell and get some draft capital, I'd strongly consider it.  The bad news is it takes us out of the free agency running but it's not like we attract free agents anyway.
