2020-2021 ROSTER TALK: Archived

Yeah, I found it interesting that Simmons' posture on this was "you never know, he might opt out" as if he could possibly be giving up the last year of an overpay to do so. I'm not sure I totally buy his thinking on Richardson, but it was certainly interesting to get the national perspective.

Zubac as a 3rd big? Sign me up, especially if the price is right.

I don't really see any of the Western contenders trading with the Mavs.

I suppose it's possible. Especially if he doesn't round into form.

I think he could be a starting big next to Luka IMO.

I think this might be a real possibility, although there is a lot of money to be thrown around this offseason.

Not trying to reopen old arguments for business, but just to be clear: with or without Porzingis?

I think it could be either. I think he could be a DP from last season replacement type.

And if the narrative around KP not being into that is true?

If I'm JRich and given the Mavs recent successes in free agency, I'd opt out and play the market.  Worst case scenario is that I could resign with the Mavs.

If he can't improve his offense the 2nd half of the season over where it's been, he should opt in and try to hit the market again after a rebound season (or he should squeeze his current overpaid contract out for all it's worth)

I mean ... he's  getting really close to Kris Dunn territory of defensive specialist guard who can't carry his weight on offense.   JRich's career PER is now 12.6 and Kris Dunn's is 11.9.  And Kris Dunn got 2/10 on the market.

I am firmly in the camp and operating in my head that KP is not in the Mavs long term future. I think Zubac is the kind of big you want unless you invest in someone like Wiseman....but even then, maybe you still want a Zubac on the roster.

It would be nice to have someone built like a brick shithouse at center again.

Why would the Clippers trade us Zubac exactly and what are the Mavs giving up? I don't see the Mavs wanting to give up anything good and I don't know why the Clips wouldn't just hang onto Zubac.

I don't either, but to be fair, Lue has not played him nearly as much as Rivers did last year.

If he doesn't opt in, I could see the Mavs moving on. But yeah, that's probably what he'll do.

Bill Simmons killed him and called him Kris Dunn.  I don't think he's playing that bad and he does show sparks of defensive greatness.  I guess I just look at the deal we handed to Wright which is no where near the 2/10 that Simmons was talking about.  Though you can tell that don't catch many Mavs games or aren't paying attention.  They rave about THJ and he's kind of turned into an every other game/every third game type of performer.

I'm not saying J Rich is a bad player. I would rate his performance with the Mavs about 5.5-6.5, with 5 being medium.

But when they were selling him to the fans, Carlisle said they wanted a guy who could guard point guards and who could take over the ball-handling some to enable Luka to play off the ball. He hasn't really done either of those things to any great extent. Not sure he is able to give what they want from that spot in the lineup.

He doesn't seem to consistently offer anything special on either end. But there are probably teams who could use a pretty decent all-around two-way player. And I haven't given up on him improving. Playing next to Luka is probably his best opportunity to showcase himself.

Not sure why the Mavs would be into that.  KP seems significantly more effective offensively in a 5 out scenario and if there are concerns about him being slow of foot, I'm skeptical putting another center on the court with him is going to help that.
