That ship has sailed. We paid a ton to get him, gambled on his and gave him a max deal and to this point have been proven wrong. I think if you are lucky, he plays 70% of your games and you hope those games line up when he's needed most. Even if he was playing well, you aren't recapturing those two future firsts. The question becomes do you continue to gamble and see if he can turn it around with the team or do you look for a healthier option that fits the team better. What we owe New York is spilled milk.

I mean, I can't fault him for being honest, and this comment is perfectly professional, but it also doesn't make me feel like he's fine with the rumors, exactly. Very interesting.
Have the Mavs ever really been in this situation before with a star player during a season?

He rushed back from the knee and the team allowed him to do so. It's put the basketball world (fans, reporters, league) in a tizzy. Really disappointed in our medical staff, tbh.

I couldn't agree more. Absolute, brutal truth. You either stand still, hoping, or you get busy fixing the roster.
The people who can't or won't wrap their heads around moving him are clinging to an idea that the Mavs can be or should be good SOON. They aren't good, and if waiting on KP to save them is the plan, I don't think they will be good in 4 years, even.
Instead of trying to use him to BUY something that fits the roster better while staying on this unrealistic timeline, my opinion is that they should SELL him for literally anything they can, be it young players (to whatever level he is worth) or picks (of whatever value he can bring). This idea that they'll only remove this absolute anchor from their roster if doing so nets Bradley Beal, LaVine or prime Michael Jordan is folly. Each day that passes makes the mistake bigger and the problem more glaring.

If we ship him to the Kings he only needs to play for the Magic and Hornets to be involved with the all of the worst run franchises in the league.

We paid a steep price for the chance at having two young other worldly talents so I'm not going to be negative here either. The problem is that because both he and Luka (no brainer win on that trade) were so expensive that we had little ammunition to add to an otherwise thin talent pool. The smarter play would have been to hold off KP, see what you had in Luka and go through the "process" to add another talent via the draft and then use accumulated assets to add a third piece with the added benefit of better understanding fit.
Everything else was spinning our tires (wasting time) and had very little upside. We are so thin on talent and assets that we don't have a lot of options to make these team better in the short term. Clock is ticking but we need to put a stake in the ground and start making smart trades, acquisitions and draft choices. I'd say we probably have ~4 years. In hindsight I would have preferred the "process" as well, but that would have been a very difficult call to make in the moment. It's hard to make the call to tank when you just gave up next year's 1st to snag Luka.

KP would have been tempting no matter what, but who cares about the future pick you gave up? You got who you want in Luka. Your next goal should be to build a team around him. Most teams do that organically, especially if you aren't in a marquee market. Cuban just isn't patient. You can't always be in a win now mindset. And yes, it is all hindsight and like I said, I don't hate the KP trade but it did come with the pitfall of really screwing up the ability to build a team if he didn't work out. And when you hamstring your assets for a management team that can't draft or recruit free agents....we end up right where we are.

That´s what I have been proposing in the last couple of days but it´s not the most popular move. Swallow a big contract and add some talented young guys or picks.
If they decide to trade him the best way to maximize KPs trade value would be in exchange for a contract that is just as bad or even worse. If KP still has some value try to get some young talent. Some kind of compensation for the lost picks.
Wiggins + Wiseman
Griffin + Bey + Stewart
Love + Okoro + pick

Yeah if you move KP, I think that is the best the Mavs can really hope for. They aren't going to get an equivalent ready-to-play star IMO, but they can get some really good young talent if they play it right.

This thinking seems in line with reality, to me.
