DAL OFFSEASON: Trade & FA | Mavs "mostly done...but you never know."

If Tatum signs same type of contract I might start worrying.
This means top players of 2017 draft class will be UFA in 2026, if the top players from 2018 decided to go 4+1 then they will be UFA in 2026 too creating another historic FA.

WCS is sort of a meh signing. FA is meh altogether but fine. I hope JJB isn't back.

Gasol or Baynes would have been exciting. I know WCS is working on a 3 ball but I'd rather have a guy like Baynes who does a lot on offense for you.

WCS is good insurance for both KP and Powell.

But not really what we were hoping for with the MLE. We’ve basically used it to bring back our own guys and some of the rookies might get a few more guaranteed dollars.

A bit underwhelming given that we were hoping for guys like Millsap, Ibaka, etc.

Burke is a great value signing.
Iwundu is a development value signing.
Johnson is a needed backup and got us off of Delon for nothing (unless you count JJ as something)
WCS is meh but it's a one year commitment.

No long term mistakes plus you got off a long term mistake.  That's a solid C+ offseason after the disaster last year.

I'm not sure the team is any better at this point mostly due to injury, but we aren't any worse.  Time to circle the TDL on our calendars.

He elected to attend the birth of his first child instead.

He later said that in hindsight, he wished that he'd just stayed with his wife (girlfriend?) for a few days and joined the team about a week late.
In the same interview, he gushed about Carlisle, and how much he had already learned from him.

The anit-Carlisle crowd manufactured a narrative that literally wasn't even 1% true. WCS WANTED to be here, and is probably very happy right now. Opting out was about $$$, nothing more.

He was worried about Covid. Can't blame him. Especially with a newborn.

I really doubt they bring back Barea.

I can't imagine the Mavs trade 2 role players to just try and sign Barea.
Brunson is a toughie. He´ll be an UFA in 2022, non-guaranteed 2021. No doubt in my mind that he wants a shot to run his own team. He has shown enough to suggest somebody will give him such an opportunity (to compete for it) in 2022. It will never happen here, so you have to consider whether you prefer losing him for nothing, while he outperforms his rookie contract for the next two years or whether you can use him as a trade vehicle.

WCS is yet another expiring deal so I like that. FA was uneventful but fine. Mavs went for small wins and got rid of Wright and Jackson. I actually like what they did overall.

Wait and see on Baynes but he might have a bigger multi-year offer than what we were comfortable with

I wonder what's up with Baynes. You'd figure there'd be more league wide interest there. My Spidey sense started tingling when Boston to scoop him up.

He might have a starting job offered, too. Mavs for sure can't offer that, once KP is healthy.

They absolutely needed something with KP and Powell not ready.  He may get a nice opportunity to shine at the start of the season.

Did the guy who said JJB would take us to 16 just say we are pretty much done?

MLE makes some sense to me.  I think they were always going to use some of it on the 31st pick.  Once they gave Burke above the minimum something like $4-ish to a big (Willie or otherwise) seemed like it was going to happen.  We just don't have enough big bodies to start the season without it.

I thought about this before, as a Mavs homer im only preoccupied about keeping Luka and getting team championships. 6 years and a lot can happen to the 2017 and 2018 draft class.

Agree. I think most of us had higher expectations when it comes to the MLE but after the Burke signing it was obvious that they had moved on from better options.
Just like in Burke´s case I am not sure if they really had to offer him more than the minimum.
Nevertheless he plays a position of need and we also cannot forget that just like Burke he already knows the system. Teams basically have no time to prepare. The season starts in one month.

If Baynes signs for somewhere around 5-6 mil 2 years I'd be a little pissed.

Yes! They added multiple players who can help and grow to a young team that needs more talent/assets instead of one, more expensive, old guy who we've heard of but who half the board would've hated 30 games in. I have no issue with this at all.

The Brunson-thing will be fascinating to watch. Even more now that Seth & Delon are off the team. He will most certainly have a bigger role than he had throughout his first two seasons.

I wonder how Burke is in the mentor role. We need someone to take Terry under their wing. It's the only value I saw to bringing JJB back as a player. I wouldn't mind JJB/Lee to come back in player development roles.
