DAL OFFSEASON: Trade & FA | Mavs "mostly done...but you never know."
Tim Cato seems like a pretty smart dude.

Your summary above was REALLY good and I am 100% fine trading out of the draft for the RIGHT long term starter. However, for me to be happy he better be REALLY good.

P.S. They could trade 18 and 31 to get a guy THEN buy #26 to get back in. I would be cool with that depending on the guy.

Well-said.

That kept in mind, while such a trade could net a proven vet, the trade-off is not just age and experience, but contract. If it's between a guy who is a badass on a contract he deserves and a guy who is a badass with some growing pains who is paid far less than his on-court worth, I'm all about the latter. Moreover, I could very well like the guy we get and be extremely pissed off that we had to include 18 to do it if it's a deal that looks fair without including it. Donnie's piss-poor negotiating skills have been discussed here. For example, I'm pretty well convinced we wouldn't have to include 18 to get Porter, whereas on the other hand, I'd be pleased as punch if we gave 18, 31, and even the '25 pick (they probably wouldn't want our bought 26, so we could still use that) if it was bringing back Jrue Holiday, whom I regard as the single best fit in the entire league next to Doncic. Would love Schroder as well; not sure if I like him to the tune of 18, but it's Presti we're talking about, so (shrug).

Why for the Mavs? Long-term planning. You get off Powell´s contract. Who knows maybe Batum actually proves to be useful. The guy is "only" 31 years old and was once considered one of the better defenders in the league, but that would just be a bonus.

Why for the Hornets? THJ is an upgrade over all their SGs. You can argue they don´t even have a starting SG. They only have Zeller at C and only for another year, so Powell fills a void, whether he starts or is a back-up

Batum is objectively one of the worst players in the league. In the bottom of the barrel of the all the barrels. Not only has he had injury woes, he's just been downright awful. And he's set to be paid 27 mil next year. Obviously the Mavs get off of Powell's contract which is a big plus, but if offering CHA a get out of Batum free card, AND giving them 2 solid role players, they better be paying the Mavs handsomely

Honestly I'd expect the #3 pick to take on 27 mil of dead space. No way CHA does that, but giving them 2 solid role players and 27 mil of cap space deserves a lot.
Sometimes I wonder if you guys are just trying to wind me up.  Big Grin

Like when somebody wanted three first round picks, Smart, Brown, Theis and the Celtics to eat all our shit contracts for Porzingis.

You got to be a little realistic please.

I´m not even sure the Hornets would accept my deal, but at least it´s not beyond the realms of possibility.

Trading back + replicating plan powder for a run at Giannis makes my eye twitch.

re: Tim Cato, meh on Andre Roberson. Injured a lot, seems like he's cooked physically and he can't shoot. I don't see Mavs would mess with that. I'd rather try to get a younger guy with some upside.

Tim's right on this. The safest bet is Mavs moving this pick.

To be fair the #3 proposal was a bit tongue in cheek. I don't realistically expect CHA to throw away a top 3 pick to get rid of a dead weight contract.

But my point still stands. It makes zero sense for the Mavs to give up key rotation pieces for a top 5 worst player in the league. Batum 5 years ago would be a great fit. Batum now is a shell of himself and cannot stay on the court. Parsons 2.0.

Which is why I threw out that CHA would be the ones to have to sweeten any deal if they really were clamoring for THJ+Powell and to get rid of Batum's expiring. Maybe Bridges, or Graham and then I'd be more interested.

What if Powell has lost his explosiveness?

He gonna bust out his post-up game, his mid-range game, his long-range game?

The Hornets would take him on trust until 2022.

Elton Brand lost 7 PPG, 3 RPG, 1 APG and 1 BPG for the three seasons after his achilles injury and then his career was basically over at age 33.

So we are keeping THJ Smile.  Actually, a pretty cool promo.

GSW throws in with Seth, Boban, Maxi and THJ.  When the shot is taken Porzingis, DP, DFS and Luka are visible.  Then the next sequence shows Boban bending over at the paint.  Oh well.

All good points. I'm not going to fault Powell for getting a terrible non-contact injury, but the Mavs did shoot themselves in the foot giving him an extension for no reason. I really do doubt Powell will ever return to anything he once was. Before the injury he was elite at rim rolling, average to below average at everything else. If he's lost his bounce he's at best a 4th string center/bench cheerleader. 11mm for that is terrible, especially if we have other 5's that can perform his role (WCS, Boban, KP, Kleber).

I would cut the line on Powell as soon as I could. But is Batum the best avenue for that? The way I see it is that both are damaged goods. And even if both couldn't play, Powell's lockeroom presence is still more valuable to this team than Batum. And Batum would in theory cost more money in 1 year to Cuban than just keeping Powell the 3 years left on his deal.

I do think Donnie will try to trade Powell. He's shown no hesitation of letting go of Mav favorites if they aren't good anymore to try and get better, even if they are a great lockeroom presence, with Devin Harris being the latest example of that (heck maybe even Barea too).

I think a more interesting trade route would to try and use Powell as a filler and go after someone like Hayward. Equally injury prone as Batum, but a much higher ceiling.

This is Danny Leroux’s primer on the Mav’s off-season.  He’s a believer in Plan Powder (likes Jrue or Oladipo in 21).  He thinks we won’t hand out new money longer than a year in 20.  He likes Jones Jr. as a defensive wing (one year MLE or part of MLE deal).

Probably the most interesting thing he said was there may be some FA’s this summer who were expecting more and would be willing to to take a one year MLE to take a shot at a better market in 2021.  That might help us, but only if there is a clear path to minutes here.  I’ve thought Millsap (age) might be a one year MLE type, but there may be others.

Considering that the salary cap is going to go down precipitously, Plan Powder seems even dumber, as would players thinking they'll get paid more in '21.

I think if the salary cap goes down significantly, Cuban will feel even smarter for not being caught with extra guaranteed money on his books.

I wouldn't assume the cap is going down at all.
