Ok I am still watching. I find May fascinating and anxious to see if he works out. Mid fourth, he is pretty mad at Diaz Graham and looks like he gave him a talking. How often did Kidd do this? You can’t do it all the time, but I liked it that he is showing passion.

Game was a reminder that even though the Mavs "recovered" (lottery luck) from the Luka disaster Nico's crimes are still haunting the team. It's not Caleb Martin's fault that the Mavs traded for him but it's beyond obvious that he doesn't belong on an NBA roster.

Risacher can't shoot.
Sergio looked the only NBA player on the court tonight. Ouch

My observations through 3 preseason games:
I'm actually a little surprised on how well Lawal is playing. He's shooting 77% from the field (10-13) and 93% from the FT line (14-15) through 3 games. I think he's definitely going to the G-League, but I like his potential. Risacher, on the hand, has been quite disappointing along with Biberovic. Christie is my starting shooting guard. On a side note, if I had to choose between Biberovic and Poulakidas, give me Pouladkidas. Sergio has locked up the backup PG role (needs to stop turning the ball over). Cisse is an energy guy. I want him as my 3rd center. Powell can go to the coaching staff or in a management role.
Risache will be out of the league in 2 years
That was a rough watch. I guess like most preseason games. Lineups with very little chemistry could be a reason. Another one could have been the recent travel. When I travel to Asia, I am dead for a few days. I am sure the Mavs travel is much better than mine but still could be a reason why their shots were not falling. Or they could be just bad. Ha
We have seen one game of Kyrie and none yet for Sasser, but they appear awfully thin at creators. I really like Sergio playing with other creators. Not sure how either Sergio or Sasser does out there by themselves trying to run an offense without Cooper or Kyrie. Things could get worse if teams try to get the ball out of their hands at the beginning of a possession. I still don't understand what the Pelicans were doing. They brought the starting lineup off the bench and played them in both halves. Sort of odd. Sending a message already or was it something else?

DJJ didn't hit 34% of his 3's and didn't take 3 a game until he was 26. Lawal is bigger, looks like he can defend and may shoot 70% as a PNR finisher. But, he's also 23 already. I hope he makes the 15-man next year, because he's fun to watch. Might even be pretty be a valuable guy if he develps a 3. His FT's look good to me, but time isn't on his side.

For a guy like him, it is tough to tell until you see how he fits in with real rotation players. Obviously the shooting is something that has to be improved on. Probably more important is him being reliable on defense rotations and principals. If he does, he could get playing time eventually even with a spotty shot.

I couldn't watch again (very busy time of year for me), but the box score makes it seem like the Mavs just didn't shoot very well.
I actually find it encouraging that they kept shooting 3's anyway, frankly. One of my biggest hopes is that May's offense consistently generates clean 3's. Some nights they won't go in - that's just growing pains. But, they can't be bottom five in attempts again and expect to be competitive.

I'm a little lost on why Dusty is sitting some of the starters, even though healthy. I mean there is only a few minutes of Coop+Kyrie so far and nothing about what an actual starting lineup might look like. I know it's only pre-season, but I'd think he would want to test his rotation against outside opponents. Last night looked like a pickup game at times.
I guess that's why I'm posting here and not coaching.

Floater/push shot/whatever he is doing looks almost as good as Naji's.

And someone on this forum was mocking me for thinking Lawal was a DJJ starter kit.

To be far, he was bad in summer league, but he was always going to be a project...a project that can jump out of the gym. If he follows DJJ trajectory, I'd be ecstatic and maybe just maybe his current progress shows May and his staff are good at development. |
