2020-2021 ROSTER TALK: Archived

Siakam is a dream, I know.  But here's one to see if we fans would do.  Add Powell to JJ and JRich for Horford and Hill. Any takers?

Not unless Porzingis is on board with what adjustments on his part it would take to make KP/Horford work. Even then, I'm not super excited by it. I think I'd rather just keep trying to make Richardson work here.

Too much to give up. I like Hill but I don't want to give up anything good to get him really. Powell + JJ for Horford gives you a significant upgrade to your top 8 without really giving up anything.

I think Horford probably takes WCS minutes in this scenario.

Yes, I just added him because he fits in that price range - not that I like him or any of the others.

Right, and that's better, which is great. You're still only able to play three bigs, so it doesn't solve the problem. What they need is another Kleber. WCS/Powell are both fine in the role they're in, regardless of which one plays. The problem is that they can't play TOGETHER.

Interesting comments on Horford - that no-one mentioned his high cost and 2 remaining years.

Kleber is pretty unique in that he's like a big wing basically. I think WCS already does Kleber-like things, more-so than we thought. I am not sure which guys would be paired up exactly but KP, Kleber, Horford, WCS is a pretty good stable of bigs. Horford is also versatile offensively so I think he could play with the other bigs.

Final year is partially guaranteed at $14.5mm.

I think he would fit well in the third big role.  He can play next to either KP or Maxi.  WCS can be KP insurance, but can also play with any of KP/Maxi/Horford if Powell is traded away.

I am of the mind that a) FA options aren't great b) Mavs are pretty close to having their top guys solidified for the near future (not ruling out a future trades though).

So with that in mind the idea is how could we maximize this roster through trade. Certainly we could do the fan forum thing of hey lets give some team our trash for their superstar.

For me I like to see what's the best overpaid type player we could realistically get for a non top-7 player thus rounding out our top 8 guys. Horford has only 2 years left and the last one is a partial guarantee for half. If you can get him in a straightforward salary dump type of deal I am interested.

Again...good group, yes. Better than the current group, maybe. Able to be played together with Kleber/KP playing soooo many minutes together, not really. It doesn't solve the problem that I'm focused on.

Horford is a shooter, so that helps, but as the 76ers learned the hard way last season, there's a significant difference in the space created by a shooter competent from 17-20 feet as opposed to a shooter competent from 23 feet.

Horford is 40% from 3 this year. I like his overall game a lot. And he is a clutch player. The Sixers had to pay OKC to take him so I don't think it would cost a lot to get him.

Imho, there is absolutely no way JRich gets traded, unless it is a third star we are talking about. I just don't get the amount of "hate" against him. His defense is way better the numbers might show. He is basically the only true 2 way player we have. He might not have been what we hoped due to bad shooting start, but this will not be solved by trading him for one way specialists like Fournier. I like Fournier a lot actually, but we could certainly say goodbye to any hopes of playing good defense if we trade JRich for him. JRich has actually improved a lot offensively in February. He is shooting 34 % from three in 7 February games. His TS is at 62 % and he has over 4 assists during this span. Sure, we played bad defensive teams, but this just indicates more time is needed to pass any serious judgement.

Biggest Mavs defensive problem is the drop PnR defense. Both KP and Kleber are awful at it lately. PnR maestros like Curry and Young are killing us. I wonder how much have the 4 games (in our last 6 games) against them affected JRich post Covid or February defensive numbers and how much really is his fault for those phenomal Young/Curry offensive performances. I am affraid what Lillard will do tonight. Another 60 point game?

I think a couple of good games made you seriously overvalue Brunson. I clearly remember half the board would trade him for a bag of peanuts after first couple of games of the season. I think our guard rotation is actually good. If I would be looking to improve this rotation in a win now move, Brunson would be the "victim". It is just too difficult to replace THJ flamethrower shooting or find a better two way player who could be a long term solution. Lowry is great, but we can hope for his services for a couple of seasons at most. Everything looks rosie on the offensive end atm, but we were playing some BAD defensive teams. Let's wait for a couple of tough games against good defensive teams Memphis, Houston, Boston and Philly, which will provide much more reliable picture, if Mavs need a (better) secondary facilitator or not. Non Luka offense is still bad despite not playing guys like Iwundu or Green anymore.

Personally I think guys like Thad Young could be nice for our rotation, but they don't really move the needle and I wouldn't really waste assets on them. DFS and Kleber still leave a lot to desire for Mavs, so I would look for a serious upgrade on those positions. Or secondary facilitator. I don't get the Aminu idea. Thats like MKG experiment we did last season.

I would do two types of moves at TDL:
1) Trade for a serious top 50 player or
2) marginal improvement, assets used only if we get rid of 2021 money (Powell)

I think number two is more likely (or even no move), as Mavs seem to trust this group. They have for 2 seasons now.

I project following teams to be sellers, unless their results drastically change in the next month: Chicago, Orlando, Cleveland, Detroit, Houston, OKC. Washingotn and Minny are sort of a mistery to me. Not really much I like there anyway. The rest will look for (at least) equal return in terms of player ability.

Agree with this, and it's not just drop coverage, either. They've tried all three levels of drop, they've tried switching (KP gets killed 1-on-1 in that scenario), they've tried showing hard and recovering, and they've even tried some zone.

That's basically everything you can do. There's nothing left to try. Nothing left to hope for other than KP just starting to play better.

Trapping the primary ball-handler has worked some

Only one game against Atlanta, to some extent. Second game it was a disaster. They stopped bothering before halftime

I know - when you're playing a team with a top-flyte scorer-handler like Dame, sit KP's butt and play WCS. You know, the big who has shown conclusive (belying some in-game eye-tests) analytical proof that he can play defense.

KP did have like 6 blocks the other day, does that count for anything?

Not really, when it is just one game and against a team without a top-flyte scorer-handler, as Scott has put it.
