I get what you are saying Dan. When I look at FA's I look at a few things:

1 - Is their team good?
2 - Do they have a big or small role?
3 - Can their own team pay them the most money?
4 - How easy is it to replace that player (ie is there a young guy behind him, does the team have cap space)
5 - Did the team give up assets to get that player?
6 - Is the team in a big or small market?
7 - Does the team have good ownership?

For a guy like Powell there's more reasons imo for him to stay than leave, which puts him in the low % pile for me. His FGA (13) was unchanged going from Toronto to Portland. THJ has 13 FGA this year. So like is there going to be some big jump in terms of shots/looks for him coming to Dallas? I sort of doubt it. Mavs spread the ball around and KP has to get his shots too.

I think he's different than a guy like THJ. If Mavs lose THJ he is not irreplaceable in that they do have cap space. Blazers are in luxury tax so they would be in a very dire spot. So much so that I think they cannot be beat on price. With all that said I just don't see it happening.

This would back up the idea that Collins is the top target. The money paragraph is here:

"Dallas also seems keen to pursue frontcourt reinforcements this offseason. While the Mavericks did quietly gauge trade interest on Kristaps Porzingis before the trade deadline, they are more determined to find a center to pair with their All-Star big man, sources said. That big man could very well become Holmes, although the Mavericks are likely to pursue John Collins this summer as well."

This would make Kamm happy ^^.

Rick's back into 2 bigs, or so it seems. Holmes would definitely be investing in a 2nd big, though Collins is another hybrid 4/5. Holmes certainly would be a lot cheaper. If you get Collins you are probably giving up Maxi plus paying Collins another 10 mil+ per year which is quite a lot. He certainly has a lot of offensive versatility. Holmes to me is safer as long as you don't overpay (4/80 would be stupid). Collins has more upside for sure but more risk given his predicted salary (up to max?).

As the leader and sole voice of the Maxi needs to be replaced in the starting lineup I agree and hope it can happen...

And as I already told you, "why can't we lose out on both?" Not in the sense of, "Scott41 doesn't want them here" so much as "Scott41 doesn't trust this MBT to accomplish their free agency goals."

You're not alone there, and it kind of seems like he has been replaced recently, no? I guess the Clippers matchup might mean we'll see him back in the starting 5, but I'm not sure.

To me, Kleber's status is all about fit, especially his fit with whomever is holding down the 5.

Kleber is the only big that worked next to KP this season. Whoever replaces him needs to be able to defend the perimeter and and also protect KP in the pick and roll (pre rotate/switch). With his post COVID decline and recent injury struggles I wouldn´t be against an upgrade but it is difficult to find a guy that can play the 6`10 wing role on defense.

Well, I think you know my feelings about "what fits next to KP."

I'm not going to get into it here, but my point is that whether Kleber "is a starter" kind of depends on the other guys, imo. He's neither "too good not start" nor "not good enough to start."

Maxi hasn't been right all season. It's hard for me to judge his performance bc I think he hasn't been right. I like how well he has shot the ball but the defense has just not been good. He has been walking in quicksand.

Pretty sure, I’ve been at least a part of laying down the tracks for this train.

I would agree with this.  His biggest value is his versatility.  There are not many guys that can protect the rim, defend the perimeter and space the floor.  Not only is he a good fit with KP, but also a great fit with Powell.  He would also be a good fit with Holmes or Collins.

This was not a great year for his test run as a starter.  I think Covid kicked his ass and he as never fully recovered.  My understanding is that he was on minutes restrictions the last couple of years due to injury concerns based on his history before coming here.  Part of me thinks he would probably be better off being limited to mid 20s in minutes and coming off the bench behind two legit starters at the 4 and 5.

Maxi is a great complimentary player.
I wouldn't mind him as a starter, but he plays better with less minutes.

Who would you call a "legit" starter at the 4.

That's the problem, we don't have one.  Gordon would have fit that role.  Collins obviously would fit that role.  You can make an argument that DFS could potentially fill that role if we had a true starting center (like Holmes).  We have 27 mil tied up in role/backup big men who should not be starting.  That is something that probably needs to be addressed in the off season.
I like Maxi, Powell, WCS as part of the center committee but then with KP getting max money its getting expensive if you add another 20 million dollar player. With Collins it makes some sense that Maxi would be outgoing. With Holmes I guess WCS would be the odd man out and he doesn't make that much. I like the idea of keeping Maxi around bc I do think he will regain his form once he has a full offseason to recover. Its still an expensive big rotation but I don't mind it.

Holmes/Powell
KP/Maxi

This means you have confidence in Holmes being able to step out to the perimeter and guard some of these perimeter 4s. Like is Holmes guarding Morris and AD-types? Seems like he is more of the full-time 5 right now vs with KP he would be doing a lot of 4 duties.
So there will probably be lots more rumors ab Mavs being interested in everybody but this first bit of news is interesting in that Mavs would be replacing a guard with a big instead of another guard.

Last summer playmaking guards were big on the Mavs list. Mavs wound up with J Rich who has been a disappointment. If he goes away and you bring in a starting big that's an interesting move. Is that because now Brunson is increasing his role as your other playmaking guard?

I see. I think you are undervaluing the bigs we have.
I won't argue Gordon/Collins might be better players. But it's questionable if they would provide more value/dollar considering their role.
They are both non-gamechanging overpays - Collins in salary and Assets and Gordon in Assets.

If you would have been talking about candidates for a third star I would have been listening.
That would have been Tobi or Middleton quality.

Last I checked, those guys are not available.  I'm also not sure either would be a good fit next to KP (as defensive 4s).  I would probably put them in similar category to Collins, not quite max good, but close enough to get that contract.
I think Collins is pretty interesting but if that falls through I am okay with smaller moves. I think the Mavs roster is pretty good and has room to get better even if they do some smaller roster changes.
