Rick walking away was a combination of his friend getting fired, Cuban's Mickey Mouse management style, the generational personality divide between he and his star and to some extent, year after year of trying to turn a chickenshit talent pool into chicken salad, and not being able to coach the way he saw fit (outdated or not).
Rick was already all in on spacing, 4-out or 5-out spread pick and roll before Luka joined the Mavs. He also loved to run horns sets or spain pick and roll. Basically all the things that Luka excels at. I think the main adjustment that RC made was to give up the leash and let him make mistakes. Luka isn´t the conservative decision maker that RC used to prefer. He is more creative but also high risk. RC had to learn that high risk comes with benefits because more often than not Luka made the right decisions. When the overall result is the league leading offense a high turnover rate can be forgiven.
