2020-2021 ROSTER TALK: Archived
Since Brunson and FinneySmith both have one year left on there contracts, could the Mavs renegotiate the last year and extend?  if so, would there be a dollar limit that witch this could be accomplished?  And would it be a good idea to do now rather then wait until next offseason?

We have proponents and haters on this board for KP, WCS and Powell. I can make positive arguments for all of them, and yet I strongly feel that the position's play is at the heart of the team's defensive problems.

In my mind, improving the defense means upgrading one or more of those guys, but which? You all know who my pick would be, but replacing KP definitely represents a traumatic shift in the direction of the team (potential for great gain or terrible loss) and he DID play better in game 2.

Personally, I'm still a believer in Powell, but it's obvious that he's not compensating the team for his salary in this series, and that his future rule is at least a little in doubt. Can he be moved this summer, even if the team wishes to move him?

I could argue that WCS might be a little underused at this point, but I don't think it's by Carlisle's choice so much as it's because he plays behind the team's highest paid player. And, you could easily suggest that doubling down on WCS's fine season by depending on him to play an even bigger role next season has the potential for disaster.

It's a pickle.
Exactly this. You are a prophet. Sure would be nice to have a rim protector on the roster when the playoffs come. Defense is still our weakness

Mavs must find a way to trade KP for a two-way playmaking guard and then pick up one of Collins/Holmes.

It seems we need a new Center

We won't go anywhere with KP. It's time to realize it. He looks so lost out there. It looks like he has absolutely no idea where to go and what to to. Offense AND defense. I realy hoped it will play out with him and Luca but it does not. Its obvious

The framework will be

Lavine/Markkanen
Porzingis
Hield/Bagley III

I expect the rumours to start as soon as we are eliminate from the play-offs.

I don’t like Lauri, but I love Lavine and would make that trade everyday and twice on Sundays.

If the Mavs had Holmes at C, they win this series easily, but they had to contend with a non defending, non rebounding C in KP and a none playing C in DP.

So who says Collins is the target?

Kleber should not be the only defensive big who can keep up with big wings.

Go for Holmes even if you pay him 20M.

A Holmes-Lauri big combo would be so much better than 29M KP.

I think the bad news to this deal is that Chicago will also insist on Brunson to deal Lavine...

Dallas would still need to work a deal to get another defensive big.

Chicago did not do much with Vucevic, could they go for an expanded deal that also sent Richardson to Sacto Vucevic to Dallas and Brunson to Chi??

Get THJ to play ball on his contract for 1 yr to keep us under the hard cap...

If he plays like this for the next two-four games, we won't be able to trade him and a pick for Wiggins.  Angry

I’ll hold back until the end of the series but the outcome will be the deciding factor for me on multiple fronts.

GM
coach
KP
THjr

Right now GM is obviously the first to go. The KP mess, lack of both oncourt help AND assets remain gigantic problems.

The coach has pulled out two wins but we’re looking at a decade of missing the playoffs and/or getting bounced in the first round. I’m all in favor of firing him if we loose this series. Results matter.

KP: yikes. The meniscus thing destroyed him, he’s not nearly the same anymore compared to the guy who used to live at the line in the bubble. It’s looking brutal right now.  Probably time to cut losses. What a disappointment.

THjr: he has done everything (on and off the court) right since coming here. It will come down to the money but I guess $15-20M is his fair market. If we can keep him for that I’d do it.

I have no earthly idea why you believe it's obvious that Mark Cuban is about to fire Donnie Nelson. I think that's the least obvious thing I've read here tonight. Do you really believe that option is in play?

I think there is no way that is happening.
If front office change happens,  it will be adding new GM (Donnie is officially the president of bb operations).
Like we have done with Gersson Rosas, but even that is unlikely.

Nah, that’s what I’d do, not what I expect to happen.

I know real changes are off the board even if we complete the decade of lottery/1st round basketball. Classic case of „Betriebsblindheit“ like we say in german. Lack of external input. Donnie/RC/Cuban are WAY too long together considering the poor results they’ve produced in all the time since the championship.

Watching the reactions after each game is an interesting exercise.

After a W, it's about how every player is great, and how huge the contracts will be to keep them all. Strong adamant opinions.

After a L, it's about how most of the team has to go, and what a disaster the team is. Strong adamant opinions.

I am reminded of the wise words of Jimmy Johnson, who would say, "You're not as good as your best game, and you're not as bad as your worst." That is true of both players and teams.

The solution isn't really "erase and start over." At this level, it's not so much who you are as it is "how do we play better the next time." And don't forget that LAC is dealing with the same equation.

I disagree with this.

The reaction after the first two games was about THJ and DFS and their increasing value around the league

The reaction after game three was about many finally coming around to what many ALREADY held: that KP needs to go and is not a good 2nd star fit with Luka.

BOTH of those general reactions are true.

Also, many of us have been saying the Mavs clearly played above their own heads in games 1-2 and that things were going to likely plummet back to earth.

I don't think an injury free KP loses value enough to go below that value. I think Wiggins + Minney is the trade to beat. Having a bad series doesn't mean he will have no value. I still think GSW does that deal unless KP gets injured.

So if Mavs did KP for Wiggins + Minney they would need to find a good rotation player with that or pull off a 3-way trade. If they do draft someone they need to just go BPA. Getting Wiggins would solve the wing depth issue, give you a scorer and allow you to play some small lineups with DFS at the 4.

Mavs would still need a ball-mover and then more depth at the 5. I would expect Mavs to operate over the cap. I like Dragic but given you create a hole at the 5 you might have to spend the full MLE on a 5 like Theis. I think the draft pick would probably be spend on a guard or center. The BAE is just not really enough to get a for-sure impact player so you really need either J Rich to come back or to find a trade unless you land a draft pick that's ready to play from day 1.

If you were able to get Lauri for J Rich then Lauri fills the need at the 5 and you have MLE to focus on a ball-mover (Dragic).

Luka/Dragic
THJ/Brunson
Wiggins/Green
Maxi/DFS
Lauri/Powell/WCS

+ Minney drafted player somewhere

Rick would have to figure out who to start/rotations once again. Its hard to sit Wiggins, DFS or THJ (especially after he gets a big contract). As good as DFS is you could probably put Maxi in the lineup for DFS and still give DFS a lot of minutes off the bench.
