2020-2021 ROSTER TALK: Archived
Question on Batum.
I believe Charlotte is paying him a lot of money for 2 more years in the buy out.
Does his new contract affect that money in any eay?
Ie if he earns more then the minimum that money is taken off what Charlotte has to pay?

Or can he double dip due to Charlotte incompetence?

Who is your source?

LegionHoopsRoss has some serious NBA connections and has proven to break info for years now.

THJ doesn't have to be traded to Utah if he's in a SNT. He definitely wouldn't be due to tax. He couldn't even be in a trade to Utah based on their current salaries.

The opportunity to spend a poop-ton of money and the opportunity to run a more aggressive switching D are the things that most excite me when I'm on a Trade-KP day.  I'm not sure I want a pure space deal.  The reason is if you don't get any kind of returning asset, here is your team:

Luka/Brunson
       /Green
DFS/
      /Maxi
      /Powell

You need three starters and a bench player who can create their own shot.  I can make it work with $65mm to spend, but everything has to fall into place.  Need a center, so $18mm for Holmes.  Need a star, so pencil in $25mm-$28mm.  That leaves $19mm-$22mm.  You can maybe get another high level starter or bring back THJ, but you need another high level bench guy who is your sixth man and slots all the rest of the bench guys in their proper role.  It would be hard to do both for that money.

The point I'm making is I'd like something I can use back even in a pure salary dump.  It could be as little as PJ Washington.  At least you've filled a slot cheaply and still have almost a poop-ton of space left.  If you end up having to trade match, I'd like to increase cap space by the legal limit (so now you have about $40mm to get Holmes and a $22mm guy).  But, I probably need two useful players back in a deal...that fifth starter and that sixth man.  If I knew all the guys I want would just come because I wish it to be so, then great.  But there are 29 other teams looking for the same things I'm looking for.

Its terrible to leak this.  First maybe the trade market is awful for him, second why not give this another chance, what is the urgency to blow this up.

1) Almost certainly NOT a DAL leak.

2) LegionHoops has NBA contacts in the northeast and not much elsewhere that I am aware of.

3) Either a Janis leak (back to NY area media) OR another team that has been approached or in conversations with DAL.

At this point I think it’s better to sell low than not be able to sell at all.

Agreed here. LegionHoops has been right about a few things over the past couple years. I think it’s likely he has contacts within the league, but always seems much more willing to throw out everything he hears out there as a “report”

If we are trying to move KP for space, I would think we would be aggressive around the draft and before free agency. Once FA opens up the amount of teams that could conceivably take on KP without sending significant salary back will dwindle.

One more possibility for the LegionHoops rumor:

Could NYK sources be really eager to give out any and all info on KP because of how it might damage KP and DAL?

Wouldn't surprise me.

Conley and Oubre, unless something changes in a major way. KP is back.

Who is your source? Not asking for a name, but some sort of general description of where this is coming from.

So....

1) A 34 year old who will likely play half the regular season games and when he does play will be under 30 mins a game, and you just hope he is healthy for the playoffs....

2) A 26 year old journeyman who hasn't stuck anywhere and will have been on his 4th team since 2019 and has consistently been a net negative for his teams and shoots a career 43% FG and 32% 3P....

3) A 26 year old oft-injured big man who lost his ability to play effective D and in the playoffs was so ineffective offensively that he stood in the corner as a "decoy"....

If this is the off season....I will probably have to eat crow and admit that Cuban is indeed a lost cause and won't listen to reason.

P.S. Just the idea of trading the team's most important floor spacer (THJ) for a guy who shoots 32% from three and STILL cannot play good team D is just infuriating beyond reason.

Sure. HV. We’re both Greek Canadians that gamble. He’ll still be an unofficial advisor to Mark going forward - one of the influences on Mark’s “final say” of things. Nico is trying to keep things extremely tight-lipped, they really are trying with Kawhi. Will be interesting to hear Nico speak next week, I don’t even know what the guy sounds like. It is Nico and Finley driving everything right now, with still some input from Dirk.

I think you have to realize that the Mavs aren’t attractive enough of destination (yet) to win over free agents with anything less than the best monetary offer.

So this plan (Conley, Oubre, KP) is from Nico and Finley basically?

Oh I realize THIS. I am just disgusted at the plan you laid out.

Does HV approve of that plan you are putting forward??

I love the idea of a Conley + Norm Powell offseason. I'd be over the moon with that. I'd love to trade KP too if we can get good value. Conley gives us a playmaker and Powell is a good switchable wing that would be a more reliable 3rd scorer than THJ. I'm totally out on Oubre. Give me Powell.

Would a Bertrans+Bryant+Avdija return considered as a the lower end of the sell low?

Well tight lipped is NOT working because if the plan you laid out is true, then ALL of them have been publicly connected to the Mavs....

1) Kawhi....check.

2) Conley...check.

3) Oubre...check.

Total fail of "tight-lipped."
