DAL OFFSEASON: Trade & FA | Mavs "mostly done...but you never know."

This is the thinking behind it. The trade route to me seems unlikely. Utah likely messed up by not making any bigger moves so far. Gobert could be most “get-able”. He and Luka had plenty of time to discuss in the bubble. Him coming in FA is what intrigues me. Gobert, KP, Luka plus keeping Richardson, DFS, Maxi, Brunson plus young players Green, Terry, Bey. It all works under the cap before re-signing Richardson and Luka. I don’t see how we could expect more than that

Likely the end of Hardaway if we make a signing this big

The Mavericks are trying to replicate the roster layout of the 2011 team.

2 seven footers
One 7 foot defensive anchor
Tyson Chandler = Rudy Gobert

One 7 foot offensive scorer
Dirk Nowitzki = Kristaps Porzongis

Offensive orchestrator
Jason Kidd = Luka Doncic

A case can be made that we would be better than the 2011 squad if that is what they are building. KP is a better defender than dirk.

The covington/ariza trade just got announced. I think the Mavs had to wait for Ariza to go to OKC before consummating their next trade. I think Johnson will end up being routed somewhere else.

If one were to think really big, what if the Mavs were setting themselves to land Gobert and then deal KP for Giannis?

Doncic - Giannis - Gobert core flanked by defense & shooting.

Might that team challenge for the greatest of all-time?

Then you'd have two guys that can't shoot.  RIP offensive spacing.

That would rock the NBA!

Actually you'd have three first team All-NBA guys - two of which are Defensive Player of the Year finalists - who can't shoot.

More Gobert thoughts:

+I don't see a Gobert for KP trade happening. With how crazy assets are being passed for players the Jrue, I think you wait until KP is healthy to maximize asset return (next offseason by the soonest). Mavs medical staff is also well respected so trading him now would probably set of alarm bells.
+If you could trade for Gobert right now, although a small sample size, it would give you a chance to test the Gobert, Luka, KP trio before having to lock Gobert up.
+Gobert is an international guy so that fits the Mavs MO.
-I really, really, really hate that Gobert COVID/Microphone incident. That's something you expect from a teenager.
-Klay Thompson and KD, while much older, might have also scared the MBT. Lower leg injuries come in bunches.
-KP not being available for the first meaningful games (playoffs) the Mavs have had in a long time might have also thrown up red flags.

Questions:

-What type of contract would he expect? Super Mas is a big no thank you.
-Could you get him on a contract that is tradeable and could be viewed as an asset?

Right? I think “other team can’t shoot” would be the destiny of that team. Wheel out Peja and 45 year old Korver and we walk into the finals without breaking a sweat

And neither of them was capable of winning anything so far... Not like they have bad players around them

As for this Townsend mystery roster spot.

It makes zero sense to sign a wing for minimum and then cut #31 just to sign a vet min center. That would be a criminal waste of asset. So either:
- Mavs are fine without vet min center
- Mavs will not resign Barea but vet min center or
- there is non Bogi trade still being negotiated somewhere

I think option 3 is most likely.

Option 2 is also quite likely.

Clippers take it (if they are indeed shopping him for a while) and are happy they don't lose him next year for free. Paul George as a free agent next year, sign me up. He is not a guy i break the bank for. Ever since he got injured, he hasn't shown me a level that i would trade for him. In some ways it might be a comparable case to Oladipo. Clippers are the "laughing stock" for what Presti got out of them after Playoff P arrived.

We should act as a team that can get something done in free agency. This isn't the old Mavs anymore with Dirk in his 30's. If the Clippers fell apart, it might very well be Paul George and Kawhi testing free agency next year. All off the sudden the Mavs looking like supreme destination with max cap available.

There is also the argument that Luka + KP + role players would be better than Luka + KP + Paul George + an empty roster. I take DFS, Kleber, maybe THJ/Richardson (that 3 man combo) + max cap next year over Paul George any day of the week.

The point wasn't "let's trade for Paul George." It was "lot's of things happen suddenly in this league."

Mavs get: Bojan and Gobert, first rd pick
Jazz get: KP, Hardaway, Bey, Boban

Jazz do it because they know he’s leaving and this is their best option

Mavs don't do it because KP is the better player and there is no reason to trade 4 for 2.

Officially clearing this deal could free up other moves that have been held up.

Kings should get on the phone and try to trade Hield and just resign Bogi.
