DAL OFFSEASON: Trade & FA | Mavs "mostly done...but you never know."
WCS, who somehow "can't play defense," in what we're being told was such a monumentally awful year for him, was 8th among NBA centers in DRPM.

Yeah, I agree, but I mean a guy off the bench who's more fast paced, switchable, etc.

The ranking part wasn't my point, and I'm not trying to run Boban off. I like what he brings.

The thing with guys like Baynes is that once everyone gets healthy, is he going to become unhappy with his reduced role?

Not one star FA this year except for Davis.  Mavs need a big, preferably on a 1 year contract to free up money next season which is 8-9 months away.  As it happens every year the first few days desperate teams offer ridiculous contracts.  100mm for Hayward? Really?

I like the following bigs as long as the contract is reasonable:

Ibaka
Gasol
Millsap
Baynes
Thompson
Crowder
Hernangomez (best choice due to age, connection with Luka)
Saric
Harkless

I'd remove Thompson but otherwise it's a good list.

Many have, but that's pretty well done with the Richardson acquisition.

Fornier/Bogdanvic could take over the Curry role.  I doubt the Mavs give that to a rookie to start out.  Both players are very similar but Fornier comes with less of a long term commitment.

Richardson can take over the role they designed for Lee at the outset of season.  I don't see these players necessarily overlap.

What??? Richardson is our third-best player (fourth if one is an extreme THJ lover). He's a starter from day one, unless we go out and trade for prime Jordan.

So if you recall when the Mavs were searching for more defense during the season, Lee became a starter.

Are you saying Luka, JR, THJ, DFS or Maxi, KP couldn't start with Brunson or Burke (one might be traded), Fornier/Bogdanovic (microwave scorer), Green, Maxi/Powell coming off the bench couldn't work?

honestly I don’t remember the all-star break period. The pandemic is basically a wash out from that time until the playoffs for me.

Depends on what you mean by "rotation"...it was fairly obvious about 20 games in that it wasn't working. Carlisle tried him in a variety of roles, including backup PG, for a long time. After a while, he became like the 10th or 11th man, and when they felt they had to sign Burke right before the bubble, that was a wrap.

Dude just wasn't a fit. Can't win 'em all.

It seems that you are right but that’s not what I saw in terms of The Player in a vacuum.

To start the season we had a # of options to work through. Seth, Brunson, Wright, Hardaway Jr, etc. Wright got the 1st chance to start IMO bc of his size/defense at SG. But once Hardaway locked in the starting spot, (I think around game 20) that pushed Wright into 2 categories.. bubupg and back up versatile wing.

On the bupg front he continued to fill valuable minutes, IMO. But we just had so many options at SG, so he mostly played in the versatile wing role in small ball. He is not ideally built for this role, he’s large for a guard but small for a wing. Serviceable, but not ideal. The Mavs signed Kidd Gilchrist and filled that role w a proper defender. (And honestly this is when I stopped watching last season until the playoffs)

So up until that point I believed Wright was a good player. Maybe not the best shooter or the best size for the wing, but he ran a good offense and provided versatility and depth. What I felt was solid for the price paid.

To me Burke was a fluke. He was available and we had an open roster spot, and he came in and offered something that was just undeniable. And Carlisle rode that hot hand as he should have.

So maybe Wright is upset about how his situation played out. Mavs fans may be disappointed. He may not even be a great fit. But I believe he’s a good player, and I don’t think he is on a bad contract. So I don’t think he’s a guy we give away for nothing.

But if he’s a malcontent that’s another situation. And players like that gotta go.

(I realize most would disagree about his contract. I guess I’m looking at that in terms of what type of mistakes Mavs have made before. It’s just not that big of a mistake for a young player that they thought had potential.)

Would love Ibaka here to handle the Terrence Mann's, Marquis Chriss's and Morris's of the world

One thing about Delon, the way he moves is very...awkward probably isn't the right word for it but it's like he has his on rhythm and that's probably an advantage he has to going to the cup or getting up shots over opponent guarding him, but playing alongside is probably going to take teammates time to adjust to and he and the team really never had that opportunity.

It just feels like the Nets are a foregone conclusion for him.

Yeah, so I don't disagree much. I do think they're trying to trade him, and I do think they'll just give him away if they can't get a more productive deal, but that's just because he's got a nice contract and has no chance of being in the (real) rotation here, moving forward. That doesn't make him a bad person, and another team might value him more. He's definitely way better on-ball than off, that's for sure.

The malcontent stuff is fairly new news. Not sure what to think about that.

I LOVE it.  He's EXACTLY the kind of guy we needed.  He's the single toughest guy in the league and no chance anyone tries to mess with Luka with him on the court.
