DAL OFFSEASON: Trade & FA | Mavs "mostly done...but you never know."

You could argue outside of Luka and KP he was the single most important player on the team.

I think trading him wouldn't be nearly as painful although I'm not looking to move up. But he has value so it should be on the table if it gets a deal done.

See, I don't see it that way. I get where you're coming from, but to me SBey would have accomplished this, not Richardson. I think Richardson is now the answer to Dame, Mitchell, Booker, Westbrook, and DFS is still George, Lebron, Kawhi, etc.

I think they complement each other, defensively, and aren't all that redundant.

I also think they're counting on DFS to provide even more of a shooting threat than they have in the past.

Oh I think both are important guys. But you got to have at least 1 great defender in your starting lineup. It's just a must. DFS was that guy and while good, great may be a little strong.

It's really hard to trade DFS and have no good defender. Richardson changes that. But ideally you keep them both.
I'm not in any way advocating for DFS to get traded. But he's tradeable now and I'm not sure he was before unless you got a good defender back.

Good! Now he's tradable.

I say that, but I know they won't trade him.

Having one good defender doesn't make the ones you have expendable. Holy crap.

The Mavs had three great value players on roster - DFS, Maxi, and Curry. Two were good at defense. The other was traded for a defender. Let's retain our defenders - even if it means that the offseason is over.

I never said they were....
I'm saying DFS went to untradeable to now he can be traded in the right deal. Everyone agreed he has value but really refused to even consider trading him yesterday.

I don't want to trade Brunson but he's got value. We certainly have a massive need for guard on the bench if he's not there. Same boat with DFS. You'd have a massive hole at defense if not for Richardson. Backup pg is a bit easer to find tho.

I'd be willing to include him a deal that clearly is an upgrade for the team and increases your asset pool. I don't think I would have said the same a day ago. That doesn't mean he's a guy I'm looking to move. But if someone was really wanting him you now can at least consider the deal.

I'd like to add another defender in FA so I'm not saying get rid of defense.

You alluded to the 3 value guys. I think he jumps up in Curry's place as an asset you could have that people might want. I definitely wasn't looking to trade Curry but you had a great deal fall in your lap. I think if someone called before yesterday you'd be saying "No on DFS but you can have Curry or Kleber."

Am I the only one who isn't just itching to chip THJ out for just anyone?

I think he was very serviceable as the 3rd option last year(less so when they tried to start him and seth at the same time...that didn't work for some reason) and if they can find a way to get another scorer that pushes THJ down a spot that's going to make him that much better for us.

Seems like most want him shipped for just whatever deal you can get. I'd rather have him than Dipo. If it takes him to get a Bogdon deal done, then okay...but I'm not sure Bogdon is a better defender than even THJ even if he'll be more versatile offensively.

All I'm saying is I'm not just getting rid of THJ like he's a bad piece(like Jackson or Delon).

Yes, Dwight Powell IS better and younger. Good point. I agree.

We need Christian Wood. The teams in front of us got bigger and deeper.

Phoenix added Jaylon Smith last night in the draft.
Golden State added Wiseman last night in the draft.
Portland added Isiah Stewart and may resign Whiteside
Denver added Zeke Nnaji
Utah added Udoka Azubuike

We know what the Lakers will run out there
We also know how Zubac killed us.

I like Christian Wood because he gives us an athletic big that we do not have to change our offense for. We are going to be another 1st round exit if we have Powell, KP, and Kleber as our only bigs.

We need to be thinking how do we defend the bigs in the West. Just about every team has a good one.

We also didn't have KP for most of that series against Zubac, no WCS either, and Powell was gone the whole year. I think they'll add a big, but it may not be a massive name, nor does it have to be.

What about 2x NBA Champion Chris Boucher?  He'd be a nice big to have to backup both the 4 and 5. Can do a little bit of everything on both ends, but needs the 3pt shooting to be more consistent.

I wonder what it would take to prevent Toronto from matching.

We still will not have WCS and you just proved my point.

2 of our 3 rotational bigs are coming off of lower body injuries and will be load managed.

We need someone that is capable of handling big minutes hell I would not be opposed to adding Cousins although he has the same issue. My point is we need a quality reliable starting caliber big.

Hell I would even take on Steven Adams if it means we can also add Galinari via sign and trade for taking on the contract.

On Zach Lowe's podcast today...

Philly paid a very steep price to get Curry, because Richardson is a very good player. Don't know what was going on in Philly, he looked like he was in a funk all year.

Dallas was very active this week.

Dallas tried to trade #18, #31 and some other throw in stuff ..even future picks ... to move up into the 8 to 10th pick range ... They were going after Halliburton.

People wonder why Halliburton fell .. it's by design. The consistant theme I heard from agents of players is they hate the teams drafting in the Top 10 ,and they don't want their guys going there. They were selective about who they shared medicals with. They were telling teams 'don't draft my guy'. That is a reason why Halliburton fell to 12. He could have gone #6. He was willing to sacrifice 7-8 million upfront to get the bigger money in the long run over his career.

Dallas finished 2nd in the RoCo sweepstakes. Portlands 2021 1st rounder put them over the top.

Dear God no, we have WAYYYYYY too much money tied up into bigs already between KP, Dwight and Maxi.  No smart team runs their team like that, unless it's like Anthony Davis or Jokic.

Glad they tried.

Also think Dallas would have needed a significantly better package than Portland to get the Rockets to trade with them.   Tie was going to go to Portland.

It would be cool to see but Morey has his hooks in him now and will not let go.

Good info...thanks.  Seems the team agrees they need one more bigger forward (RoCo and Gallinari are opposite sides of the same coin, but both can hit an outside shot).  The question is who else resembles that coin and how do you get there?

I might be thinking too big here, but: Christian Wood. Jerami Grant. Both can shoot, and both are in the theme of "let's get more athletic."

Do division champs still get home court advantage in the first round?
