They did a conservative approach. Wanted to see how well the injury could heal on it's own before electing to do surgery. Minimizes scar tissue and provides the best of both worlds. Only downside is how long it takes to do that approach. 6 weeks to see if it can heal on its own. 8-12 weeks for surgery recovery. Can't do that option in the regular season.
Overall I again am not worried at all. Meniscus injuries are relatively minor and don't affect athleticism. Many people can tear their meniscus and continue their day-to-day lives normally without ever knowing there's an issue unless they start to do "The Twist". As long as his recovery goes well, KP should be back by January fully healed and ready to go.
