Buyout Market: DAL officially signs MKG | Broekhoff waived
Wait a minute here??? Why would we sign him to a vet min deal and let him spend the rest of the season trying out for other teams? And with Luka's help?

Don’t we have a bunch of cap space? Or can’t we get it by waiving the remainder of that now-worthless trade exception for Harrison Barnes?

Why wouldn’t we offer a multi-year, declining-value deal with a team option? And wouldn’t he want the same—a larger guaranteed amount (over more years), more money this year (in a declining-value deal), and Mavs' bird rights when he’s eligible for his next contract?

Somebody with cap smarts please tell me why on earth this would be a vet-min, half-season deal???

I stole one of Kamm's charts
We're well over the cap by nearly 16 mil. KP, Maxi, and Dodo all had capholds smaller than their deals so capspace was mostly dead the moment we re-signed them. Then the other guys just added on top of that
Then this coming summer we'll have negligible capspace so we'll just be staying over the cap again and using the MLE to add talent unless a trade surprises us

Having a KP at the 5 affords you the luxury of playing a MKG, but you can't put 2 bad shooters on the floor at the same time in the modern NBA. This is why Morey had to eventually trade off Capella once he acquired Westbrook.

Here's a question for the cap knowledgeable people:

Does this partial season minimum contract count towards rebuilding Bird Rights on MKG? So if this summer we sign MKG for a 2 year minimum deal, in the summer of 2022 would we then have full Bird Rights?

Yeah that's a long way off and the chance that he have have rehabbed his career enough where he would command a decent contract may be small but I'm just curious.

Yes the minimum salary counts as Year One toward Bird Rights. What also helps is that we are not ONLY confined to the minimum salary to keep MKG. We can offer up to 120% of the minimum salary as NQFA. So teams get to keep their own FA's at 120% of their previous salary or 120% of the minimum (whichever is greater). I don't know how much 20% moves the needle, but I would wager that 120% of the minimum for a 1 yr contract; with an opt out in order to get to Early Bird Rights in year 3. From there we are looking at Full Bird Rights depending on how long the minimum is for an EB Contract

Just have to shake my head at that
Uncontested layups are way worse than an uncontested three pointer
Use our f'n size advantage. Not like anyone is going to guard MKG on the perimeter so he won't be stretching the defense

Note: I'm not complaining about him being the "five" next to KP or even Maxi. Yes please.
It's the Jackson/MKG frontcourt pairing possibility that's freaking me out

I don't think Jackson is going to get 4 minutes, at least I hope not. In my view you would try to pair MKG with KP or Maxi but not WCS. With KP, MKG would be 4 on D, 5 on O and with Maxi he would probably be the same. I am thinking Jackson's minutes need to be reduced to "sporadic" and probably be limited to the SF position.

I would start:

Luka
THJ
DFS (or Seth)
MKG
KP

My bench:

Jalen
Seth (or DFS)
Delon
Maxi
WCS

I think Jackson should be left out of the rotation. Maybe it will light a fire in him. If not, he's not good enough right now to play on a playoff team.

Will be very interested to see how Rick uses MKG and how much. Obv if he can be put in a position where he doesn't have to shoot much, that would be ideal.

Curious to see his shot chart and if his best percentages are from the top of the key.  It looks like he tends to square his body up to the baseline instead of the basket.

Typo.  It should read: 3? and D!
