THE CRUCIFIX: Cato: Wood isn't thrilled w/ his role...Will depart in the summer
Wood is everything on offense that we hoped Porzingis would be and was not. What Porzingis really lacked and what what a major issue all the time after Luka passed to KP is that lack of touch and floaters around the rim, and inability to dribble with the ball, and the inability to pass it out when the defense recovered. Porzingis is just not smooth offensive player, but rather one dimensional. Wood is entirely multidimensional - shows amazing ability to drive, finish, make floaters, just score in natural ways around the rim, and that is a huge weapon for Luka, that is exactly the player that fits Lukas offense. In addition as with JB and SD, Wood can drive to the basket, and when Luka is doubled, Wood can (as JB/SD) use that space to drive and penetrate (when not using the space to shoot).

That's exactly the players that fit Lukas offense, and that's exactly why JB and SD are a major fit. Btw, that's also the reason why I believed Sabonis would be a huge fit here. Wood seems as capable around the basket offensively as Sabonis, but while Sabonis is even better passer and screener, Wood is better shooter from the outside, and has more length and is easier for Luka to find.

Although Wood hasnt been that great in setting screens, for an interesting reason, its really not been negative for the offense. Woods athleticism and length has done, that even after setting a bad screen, he was able to roll away and set him in position for Luka to pass to him. Thus, despite the bad screens, defenses still cant figure out ways to prevent Wood from getting the ball inside from Luka. That's a huge positive for Luka and Wood fit here in Dallas.

Wood is just a natural player and those skills you cant teach to someone like Porzingis. I think this was a great move to get Wood here. He has plenty of potential on defense and is a good rebounder. The team needs to work on his defensive effort and learning the schemes, there is plenty of potential for improvement.
