Man we need to move THJ quick if that's true.

Tim Cato did a predictions piece for The Athletic and the only trade related prediction related to adding a big man:

"this team really doesn’t have much big-man depth, something highlighted by Powell’s preseason absence. The Mavericks trade Courtney Lee for a big man around January, probably someone who’s talented, not playing for his team, and making around $25 million over the next two years. That means Dallas gets a good backup player without adding salary headed into the summer of 2021."

Players that qualify for a Lee trade that expire after two seasons include Dedmon, Zeller, Portis, James Johnson, Dieng and Olynyk.

I don’t get this line of thinking unless you believe this group’s ceiling is a championship in which case, I don’t know what to say.

I like Adams a lot. I understand wanting to play KP at center but our big rotation is too thin. When KP gets in foul trouble early some games (which will happen playing more 5) our rotation will look even thinner. Mavs have a bunch of guards and wings, I could see us moving a player at the TDL, I hope Adams last til then. I imagine he will last until then bc OKC will have more options for trades than they do right now.

I would imagine Mavs aren't doing any deal that doesn't include Hardaway. Hardaway + DFS or something like that at the TDL.

That's a good prediction. I would like any of those options.

He is not guaranteed for next season. Other than him, that is basically it. Problems:
- Miami (Johnson, Olynik) doesn't really have assets - I don't think those guys are worth their money, so we are not really getting much in a straight up trade
- Minnesota (Dieng), Charlotte (Zeller) and Sacramento (Dedmon) are not likely to be contenders for play-offs. As such will not be willing to give up assets.

How about Bogdanovic?

He rejected Sacramento extension and he might get too high offer as RFA for Sacramento to match. Sacramento already has 123 mil commited for next year and will need to extend Fox (probably max) in 2 and Bagley in 3 years.

As he is already 28 his price might not be really high, as you have to take into account, any buyer will need to resign him. Due to the extreme low amount of FA available, teams with huge salary cap might offer high numbers just to sign someone.

I think he would be a great fit at SG , but no point trading for Bogdan unless they are happy to pay him $20mil a season in the offseason.
With him being 28 I think he is a bit old for the Mavs current plan.
Plus Cuban will want to maintain his 2021 cap-space dreams.

That would be really stupid. Speaking about top UFA, there are basically just three possible guys:
- Freak: While he would be the ultimate player we could get, there will be 29 other teams trying to convince him. Totally possible he signs the max extension with Milwaukee and get out of market.  If he doesn't sign the max extension, I would assume Milwaukee would be smart enough to trade him
- Davis: totally possible he resigns with Lakers. I don't really see him anywhere but large market
- Oladipo: would really fit with this team. No idea if there is any chance to bring him.

If any of the mentioned three showed interest in Dallas, we would make cap room, no matter the cost. However, the possibilities are so low, that it would be really stupid to have plan A strategy to have max space available and ignore all opportunities that might come along.

Notable others: I don't see Gobert as best fit. Neither are Drummond, Adams, DeRozan and Porter. I don't think any remaining guys are actually better than Bogdanovic.

Not disagreeing with you.
But i get the feeling Cuban wants to try and fix the embarrassing Giannis history, ie not drafting him to save cap-space when his GM was telling him GA would be a great player.

If Giannis actually becomes FA in 2021 AND agrees to sign with Dallas, you can trade Bogi (serves just as example, you can insert any other name) away for a bag of peanuts. Heck, you can also go Phoenix style and add a second rounder or two for someone to take him. You can use him in a sign and trade. Plenty of options.

However, he could be a great help before 2021.

How many times do other teams have to do this before we get on board with it?

Speaking with Harvard Business School professor Anita Elberse and her co-author, Melcolm Ruffin, Giannis Antetokounmpo said his decision to sign a long-term contract with the Bucks will be "a lot more difficult" if the team underperforms in 2019-20.

"I want the Bucks to build a winning culture," Antetokounmpo said in a case study on the team's turnaround (via the Journal Sentinel). "So far, we have been doing great, and, if this lasts, there's no other place I want to be. But if we're underperforming in the NBA next year, deciding whether to sign becomes a lot more difficult."

No one else ever seems on board but a Porzingis for Giannis swap seems like the best case scenario to me if the Bucks underperform

No way. Trio of Luka, Porzingis and Giannis would be so good, they would be basically a lock for winning it all for a long time. They almost perfectly complement each other. If Giannis wants to win, he should come to Dallas and beat the crap out of all NY and LA teams :-)

Your post is better than what a handful of Viagra would be...and yes to many nights of the Mavs knocking out teams...

For once, I think it's way too soon to think about trades.  Mavs need to see how the pieces fit together.  And then they need to see which of their pieces have trade value to trade for something.

I don't like the idea of trading for Adams right now even if it would make them better.  This year is a "make the playoffs and it's a huge win" year.  You're not really trying to be a contender.  Be patient.  Who knows if Brunson or Kleber turn into great trade pieces?  Who knows who will be available at the trade deadline or next summer?

It's never too soon. This doesn't mean anything will happen before TDL :-)

Exactly. That’s also not to mention much of the tradable pieces are not eligible til Dec anyway, so any trade involving them (Maxi and Powell) would have to be executed after then. Doesn’t mean we can’t agree to a deal beforehand.
