2021 FREE AGENCY: Markkanen wants out of CHI | DAL "definitely interested"

I won't feel good until he actually signs with one of those teams. We're almost home though!

Other than Ball (if you like him) and maaaaaaybe Robinson, I'm not sure I see any of those as "can't miss" opportunities, but I can get with most of them.

Here's what I'm saying, though: Cuban is the owner. That means they're doing this the "flexible" way. Period. At least Dragic fills some needs. To my thinking, it was either something like this or going all in on Dinwiddie, which would've broken my heart. By comparison to THAT, I'm feeling pretty good about this rumor.

As I said. Brainwashed. Or just realistic. Just super depressing if that is the best the Mavs can do with Luka on the roster and near max capspace. If the plan was to overpay Dragic we could have accomplished it with Donnie in charge. Overpaying aging role players was one of his strengths.

Very true.

I think it's a lot harder to do that job than we realize, especially with an owner who I think we're soon going to realize is among the cheaper half of current NBA governors.

So are we down to Tsunami Papi yet?

I am fine with Dragic however he gets here.

There are plenty of option.  Lets money whip Ball or Powell.  We can get Holmes for less than that (can live with bad fit).  We can get a Caruso for roughly MLE.  We could get THT for less than that.  Then there are a ton of guys around 30 that would cost less and contribute more (and for longer).  Lets see what assets Miami needs to send to make this work.  As far as I'm concerned, we should take all of those assets, or be able to dump salary (Powell) or there is no reason for us to do this.

Also if Richaun Holmes is really available for 4/64 then I'd go all out and do it.

I think it's obvious at least a couple of the centers we have are not going to be here come October.

I've been out on Ball from the beginning. Very happy not to have to deal with him.

I, too, have been puzzled by the Mavs' apparent lack of interest in Powell, but maybe they'll go for it.

Well, you oughta at least wait until stuff is actually announced and all their deals are done before getting too depressed.

And why the insistence that this would take all the cap space. The speculation seems to be that we'd get him via trade.

The Mavs could legally just absorb him (through trade) into their space. I think people are just jumping to that conclusion. It's possible though.

So did Burke.

My guess (hope) is that this is part of the angle for Dallas here.

It would fit into what I think I understand about how Cuban wants to operate.

Mentioned exactly that a couple of minutes ago. If the deal is something like Dragic + minor asset for Powell it´s a completly different story.
Getting him via trade can mean a lot of things. Just absorb him into capspace without any outgoing salary (would require more than half of the remaining capspace). Or with different versions of outgoing salary.
Right now I am still hopeful that Dragic won´t wear a Mavs jersey next season.

Are you happy with that as your argument? Compare Burke's and Dragic's careers.

Thank you Donnie.

It's finally starting to dawn on some folks that just replacing a GM isn't a cure all for the franchise's problems. The possibility of another trademarked Mavs off-season (nothing is certain yet) is going over about as well as you'd expect.

To be clear, I think both Dirk and I would be reasonably ok if this involves us dumping Powell.  But many folks here are suggesting that it would be an ok offseason if we simply took Dragic into cap space.  We believe that would be a complete failure of an offseason (with basically MLE money left to get one more player).  I am waiting to see what happens, I am just really surprised folks around here would be ok with that outcome.

I'm still hoping that we see a difference in GMing based on how things go after our primary targets go other places. Not giving up yet.
