I assume DP is one of those poor defensive bigs you mention, and my interest starts with their ability to get rid of him first.

I think Holmes is wildly better on defense.  I would say top 10 defensive centers in the league.  He can be your anchor.  Portis is somebody you need to hide on defense (with somebody like Giannis).  He can't protect the rim and is slow on the perimeter.  I would easily pay 4/60 for Holmes, and Portis would probably be lower on my extensive MLE player list.
