Unfortunately, Carlisle knows all too well what a bad deal for the Pacers it would be.

...unless Rick loves Luka and Mark so much that he wants to deliver us a few possible consecutive, very deep, playoff runs

RE: Free Agent Market

I could have a wrong read on this, but it seems like there are a lot of players seeking a lot of money that isn't going to be there for teams to spend. It feels like there will be a lot of guys taking less this year and that there might be some good "bargain hunting" to be found once the biggest names grab the lion's share of the capspace.

I'm getting the same feeling.

I am not a Celtics fan, so I watch maybe 10 of their games per season. Almost every time I see them, Smart does 3-4 things that would make me angry if he was on my team.

Now, he USED to do 5-6 other things that would make me love him, too. Listening to Simmons (who we all know IS a Celtics fan) over the past few years, he has become increasingly down on Smart. He and MacMullen (sp?) just talked about how Smart is "tired of being known as a defensive player" on the podcast yesterday.

Idk, part of me thinks he's exactly what they need and another part of me thinks he has a screw lose, and not in an awesome Jimmy Butler sort of way.

Agree that Smart is known for his offensive brain farts but overall the impact metrics of the last few season still have him as a net positive on offense. His scoring efficiency and shooting is still mediocre but at least not in the league worst category and his playmaking is legit. Nearly a 3:1 ast/tov ratio in the last few seasons on decent volume (5.7 asts last season). Good pick and roll ballhandler (70th percentile last season, 87th in 19/20).
I would argue that some of his bad tendencies are not really on him. The Celtics lacked leadership and in the big moments Walker, Brown and Tatum were nowhere to be seen. Smart wasn´t afraid of the moment and tried his best. He also elevates his level play in the playoffs (scoring volume and efficiency).

Still think that he is an elite defender. My biggest concern are his injuries. They are a direct result of his play style. Cannot dive after every single lose ball without picking up some bruises. Best case scenario would be to have him in a Iggy kind of role. Load management in the regular season. All out effort in the playoffs. Not sure if the Mavs can afford to do something like this right now.

Smart is easily a tier or three above Wright or Jackson.  I'd be more concerned he's more of a PatBev or Danny Green who's best days are behind him.  Smart is 27 though.

I think it´s the other way around, there isn´t enough quality on the market to spend the money in a good way, so players call for more than they should get.

That´s my concern as well. Age isn´t always the deciding factor and I don´t think Smarts hustle based game will age well.

...which was the primary concern voiced in my initial post.

I think he WAS three tiers above Wright/Richardson, for sure. Not sure he still is, but I also trust guys like @"dirkfansince1998", so I'm a bit torn.

The fact that Bobby Portis just turned 26 just broke my mind.  It seems like he has been around much longer.

With the rumors of Dallas looking to trade Powell, it struck me that having about $40mm in cap space may not be for 1-2 guys but for 3. Being able to offer about $13mm (well above MLE) to three different players could be a nice way to have your pick of the better deals out there once the major cap space quickly dries up.

I think that's always the case on day 1.

But, I agree with Kamm that there are more players than money this time around. We'll see.

Just count the PG's who think they're about to make north of $20 million per. Spoiler alert: many of them won't.
