2021 FREE AGENCY: Markkanen wants out of CHI | DAL "definitely interested"
You’d have to imagine that if the Lauri deal happens that means the Dragic deal also happens with Dwight+ going to Toronto. Reading the Tim Cato and Blake Murphy Athletic article from today, it sounds like the Raptors would only want Josh Green as they picked Malachi Flynn over Ty Terry - add in the fact that Josh Green is inexplicably not playing any summer league and I think these 2 deals are tied together.

I wouldn't give up Green. Terry and a 2nd at most. Otherwise just wait if the Raptors get better offers, and someone that can match the 19 mill. Good luck

What if WCS is outgoing in the deal?

Tim Cato makes the case that the Mavs’ scouting department, which has not changed at all with the front office turnover, overruled favoring of Saddiq Bey and the residual Bob drama could be enough to make Green available in a deal for Dragic.

You know how it works for the Mavs. If we hang on to Green, he'll never become a rotation player. If we trade him, he'll make at least one All-Star game in his career.

Seems the most we could offer him through the TPE would be ~$47.3M for a four year deal with the 4th year being a player option. That would be a huge steal, but maybe not as unrealistic as we think from Markkanen´s POV.

If he cannot find a S&T this year, he has to play on the QO, then becomes an UFA and maybe sign a 68/4 deal next summer. That means he roughly earns $42M over the next three years. If he agrees to the TPE deal, it´s $34M. So he loses roughly $8M on a projected $42M vs. a guaranteed $34M, but gets to play for his preferred team. He doesn´t have to worry about UFA or injuries next year.

Also if he signs a three year deal now, instead of a four year deal next year, he´ll probably align his next free agency much better with the next projected (post pandemic) cap spike. As we learned with Mahinmi and Mozgov. You gonna get paid, if you time that right.

I´m trying to figure out whether it gives the Bulls more or less leverage, if Markkanen agreed to that contract.

Markannen has a choice between more money and playing with Luka.  This is a pure recruiting opportunity where the franchise needs to make it clear he is wanted.  He can lose 8 million in the short term but if he believes that he is a star on the right team then he can take a chance and go for the chance to get much much better.

I wanted to see if cow would be more tail-hurt at WCS at current salary or LM at what we'll end up paying him.

  • Specifically says he wants to be a Mav early on, that has to mean something
  • Is a bump in talent the Mavs sorely need
  • Young and can develop further
  • Not just a spot-up shooting big or a rim rolling big, has a more diversified offensive game
  • Can dribble the length of the floor on a break and not a turnover waiting to happen
  • A KP replacement should the Mavs move on from KP, or at least be the main offensive big for the days KP is going to be unavailable
  • Can play with any big on the roster not named KP
  • The potential of his pick and pop with Luka is high
  • Is going to be useful in the regular season, providing the Mavs with another legit scoring option
  • Another floor spacer, but can attack the rim off the dribble
  • Mavs can put a five man crew where everyone has a lethal 3 ball
  • Subpar rebounder, but Luka can offset that, and with Dirk on the team, can teach LM how to be a better rebounder
Really like your post dude

Bulls don’t want salary coming back. This is the easiest way. The most player friendly contract we can fit in the TPE. Bulls get a 2nd and/or their pick of Brown/WCS/Terry. Nothing more.  Seems like the best way for all 3 parties

Lauri and Dragic in. Outgoing Powell, Green/Burke and Terry/MBrown in the Dragic trade. A player and/or a 2nd in the Lauri deal

Can you offer 3 years with last year being a player option in a S&T?

FGump has said all 3 have to be guaranteed in a SnT I believe. But I've been horribly wrong...I think, on cap stuff today!

We talk about wanting DSJ back, Fish asks MC about it a day later. Coincidence? I. Think. Not!

Found it:
S&T: The player must receive a contract of either 3 or 4 years (not including any option years), where only the first year must be fully guaranteed.
