Collins is a short-armed 4/5 who can’t create his own shot, yet you want to give the guy a max contract. The Hawks got better when he was less of a focus in their offense. Unreal. Conley is likely not available. They can’t pay Holmes unless they dump KP, and they can’t dump KP because they gave the guy a 5-year max with no injury protections. What exactly is the better option here? They can’t keep kicking the can down the road for the perfect deals because they’re not going to happen, ever.
https://twitter.com/swopa/status/1420443...48865?s=21 This. I’d prefer other options as well but Lowry is worlds better than any of the FAs we’ve ever signed. For once we’d have a veteran who can actually lead not only in the locker room but also by example on the court. I’m in. Its a bit of a hail mary attempt once again but it’s not like Nico has inherited a bunch of valuable draft picks or highly coveted young players to wheel and deal. The pressure is already on the organization thanks to years of pathetic roster building and player development by Rick, Donnie and Cuban.
Lowry + Hardaway while still having the
MLE & BAE would already be a big step into the right direction.
Heck last year they couldn’t even find someone for the MLE so they pissed it away for WCS and Burke...
We’re pretty much at rock bottom with the roster outside of Luka. This isn’t an easy or quick fix kind of thing. But Lowry would help us a lot right away.

You only have the full MLE if you somehow traded for Lowry. If that happens, then yes, presuming we get someone good with the MLE, that's not the worst imaginable offseason.
Thought for a minute that we spent the MLE on WCS last year, but no, we used cap room. Burke and WCS. Wheeeee....

We can thank Rick if JRich actually opts in. That would be another guy Carlisle has ruined to the point where he’s not even betting on himself in a year where plenty of teams have caproom in a wing player-friendly league.

I liked your post as a kneejerk, but I don't think it was Carlisle's fault that JRich was bad on both ends of the court last year. He gave him lots of rope last season trying to make him work. You're correct if he somehow used him wrong or ruined his confidence.

For the record, I disliked both the GM and head coach hires.
So with my prejudice already there, what else did you expect? The GM has never put together a basketball roster at any level. The GM has never worked in an NBA front office. Based on all the reporting, the GM was hired because of his connections to star player and agents. So the Mavs chasing a big name is a lot more consistent with the hire than them doing something analytic and/or with long term in mind.

I expected competence and intelligence that was greater than the average fan.
I STILL expect that and have NOT given up hope.....but Stein (who is usually right) is freaking me out with what he is saying. Hopefully Stein is knowingly doing the Mavs a favor. Hopefully Nico's true plan isn't known by everyone in the NBA.

I certainly don't know if Luka is Dirk or Giannis or Lebron or Shaq, but I'm curious what makes you guys so certain you do know?
(Every public statement, public action, and behind the scenes report I've seen makes it sound like he's closer to Giannis than to Lebron but I certainly don't think any of that gives me any certain window into his head).

I’ve changed my mind about DeRozan. He’s not the greatest fit, but I’d definitely prefer him over the in decline Lowery. Plus, at least by what he says, he’s thinking about more than just a payday. If Kawhi and Collins are out, I’d rather take a run at him than an old point guard.

Yeah I am getting close to that point. I do not like the DeRozan fit....but Lowry at 3 years, $90 MILLION?? Maybe I DO like DeRozan now....

Just for discussion...
how many "impact" starters are in the NBA right now that are 36-37 years old?
CP3
PJ Tucker count?
...
I really like Lowry. It just seems like you're placing a bet on a big statistical improbability.

Just a gut feeling. I don't know for sure but the amount of fame and success he's had early on makes me think that way. I do like that when he is questioned about player/coaching/gm moves, he's said the "right" answers.

I think agents want to know the team they are negotiating with will actually have the cap room they say they will have. Teams might want to know they will actually have space once the moratorium ends to actually sign the offer they made at 5:01 on 8/2. Even teams who might be adjacent to this deal (like NO sending Ball for Brogdon) might want to know exactly where Indy stands and who is actually on their roster.
Great if everything between Memphis and NO works out. But, neither party is obligated to finish their announced deal. "Can" announce and should do it this way are not the same thing.
