It would be so Mavericks...except they'd actually sign the guy unlike the old regime.
Lowry and THJ is probably worse than what most of the board that's been talking up the Nico hire has been hoping for. But honestly my expectations for this front office are so low, that it'd probably be better than what I expect.
Dinwiddie and THJ is about my bar for the Mavs. If that happened, I'd be like oh yay same ole Mavs. (Oubre and THJ is the only thing that would piss me off)

And he is a guy you hate playing against with all his shenanigan's. If he is on your team though, you love them.
The age is a legit worry, but this team needs to go into every year know trying to win a championship. No more redshirt years with Luka on the team.
I would be fine with the overpay if there was another move tied to the Lowry signing.
I just find it hard to make everything fit. IMO it will be a lot easier if Richardson opts out. Then they would need to move Maxi or Powell. Maxi would be easier to move but still could be challenging getting space back for him. Plus, that would open another hole on the bench. I can't imagine Masai would willingly take Richardson, Powell and/or Maxi. He tends to think bigger and these type of players don't appear to move the needle for him. If Lowry does leave for nothing though, that would be a rare mistake from him. He probably could have gotten some solid young assets for him at the deadline.

I am not really worried about the age. I think that really is a problem for regular season only. The only important thing is to make it to the playoffs healthy - even if that means taking it a bit easier in the regular season with those elder statesmen

I hope Dallas has some insight here. Awfully tough to compete against Miami and his hometown Philly. Plus, Dallas does not have good assets for a sign and trade so if things were equal Dallas is behind there too.

Thanks for the full Stein link, CJK.
I really love the idea of Dallas skipping the old losing recruiting pattern and cutting to the chase with who they think they can get. Stein seems to be hinting heavily that Lowry to Dallas has a real chance.

The options for S&T does not affect who lands him. That is a decision after he chooses which team to go to. Then that team can work with Raptors on potential S&T.

I'm guessing that's why we're hearing more about Dallas clearing cap space. Figure that out, and there's no trade competition if Lowry truly wants to be here.

You will need to move more salary. If Richardson opts in, I have difficulty believing Mavs are going to be able to clear 20 million in cap. Especially with all the parity. I would not want to give away Green and Brunson (and Terry at a lesser piece).
If Richardson opts out, I think there is a solid chance they could move Maxi for cap room. But this may take a while until FA is over.
I am just guessing obviously, I just think moving an opt in Richardson and either Powell/Maxi is challenging.

Well, it's a lot easier when you're the only team out of the 3 that has cap space. I don't think anyone should just assume that Toronto will automatically take back whatever Miami or Philly are willing to offer to match salary in a trade. Remember, Toronto already refused offers from the same teams at the trade deadline, preferring to just roll into FA.

Like some, I'm a little down on Lowry's age.
BUT:
1) He is a winner and a leader. Maybe the best of those categories that Dallas could hope to add.
2) He is a TOUGH player - the kind who could teach these guys how to play with a little more edge.
3) Even without the toughness angle, which is important, I think he's a defensive improvement over the Wright and Richardson projects.
4) He would absolutely fix any secondary playmaking issues, and can even take some wear and tear off of Luka by allowing him to play off-ball some when they're together. I think this might be a bigger benefit than we like to talk about around here.
5) VP is right about the STATUS of this signing, should it happen. It would be the biggest FA signing in the modern history of the Mavericks, for sure. Not sure what that's worth, but I AM sure it's worth more than nothing.
I don't hate it - kind of like it, actually. But, I don't hold out much hope that it will happen.

From The Spun...
There was some assumption from league sources that Lowry would be chasing a second ring in free agency. But while playoff or prospective playoff teams make up the list of suitors, the new operating assumption is that money will be the deciding factor for Lowry.
There will be no ring chasing under a minimum deal, in other words.

1) Two years ONLY (want a max slot in 2023)
2) Better be sign and trade to free up other space (preferably KP)
3) Need space for Holmes in this scenario

Miami got Jimmy Butler without any cap space. We got Delon Wright with $30 million in cap space.
I wouldn't say it's a lot easier unless I see things change in Dallas.

I LOVE Lowry the player but his body type and age of 35 really worries me on a three year guaranteed deal.

Yea, this.
3 guaranteed years for Lowry + 4 guaranteed years for THJ + no other moves = we'll be better this year but not a risk worth taking IMO.
