I really do hope we get some substantial comments about the roster.

I snickered way too much at that "trap question" thing...I felt dirty about it....

People keep bringing up old news, does he have to answer for 20 year old sins every stop he goes?

I guess we will find out tomorrow.

Regardless of whether VP is pulling everyone's leg or not... there's certainly a bunch of smoke regarding Kawhi being unhappy with LA and considering leaving.

There's been reports that Nico has a good relationship with Kawhi from Kawhi's time with the Jordan Brand. Kawhi had it out with Nike over the logo and perhaps Nico was a guy with Nike who was in his corner? Just a guess.

If there is some sort of trust there with Nico, it would make some sense that if he leaves LA that Mavs are the team. He's a strange guy and we have no idea what/how he thinks... But I think there's enough evidence with his career that the aspect of trust is super important to him.

I don't really think Kawhi Leonard is coming here...but if he does, the absolute best part of that will be the mountain of hatred we feel from Spurs fans tripling in height overnight. Worth taking a shot for that alone.

another factor to consider on the Kawhi angle...
If Kawhi and Nico do indeed have a good relationship, do you think Kawhi is going to lead him on and make him think Mavs have a chance when they don't?

The more I think on it, I don't think we'll just be waiting around without a chance. I could see Kawhi letting Mavs know that they are out before FA starts if that's the case.

There will be no pitch meetings.

You have to ask yourself this - why did Kawhi only essentially sign a 2-year deal? He needs another to get the 10 year max, so wouldn’t he have done a 3+1 to get there and have the player option for a 4th as insurance?

Kawhi is fickle. Yes, he wanted to go home.. 2 years ago. He also loves basketball and cares about his legacy, especially compared to guys like LeBron and Durant. Kawhi was not on the phone negotiating with Sam Presti when the Clippers gave up that enormous trade package for Paul George and gave themselves almost no roster flexibility from that point on.

I think I’ll be proven right here.

I hope the days of the Mavs being 2 days behind when free agency begins has ended when Donnie resigned.

Proven right how? Are you saying Mavs are going to get Kawhi? Or Conley and Oubre?

I have another idea for the moves the Mavs can do:

1. Sign and trade for Lonzo Ball for 20M/year contract in exchange for opted-in JRich, Brunson, JGreen and WCS.

2. Sign THJ to a somewhat reasonable. contract about 18M/year.

3. Trade KP for Gordon Hayward.

4. Sign Nerlens Noel for full MLE.

5. Sign Mike Tobey using BAE.

Starting line-up:

PG Lonzo (3&D, ball-handler, playmaker)
SG Luka (Primary playmaker/shot-creator)
SF DFS (3&D)
PF Hayward (2nd banana shot creator)
C Nerlens Noel (defense, lob-threat)

Bench:
THJ (shooter/spacer, bench scorer)
Maxi (3&D)
DP (roller, energy guy)
Tobey (P&R/P partner for Luka, big defender)

To be fair the only guys I really want out of those flurry of trades are Conley, Adams, and Dragic. All of them I perceive as attainable without convoluted sign and trades.

Maybe the Mavs could wrestle out a future first for compensation of taking on Adams!

Well, someone has to do it since Kamm ran off DL Smile

I've liked Adams going all the way back to his draft.  He really fell off last season, but I perceive him to be a fallen angel type (though an expensive one).  I've been playing around with NO deals and just can't find things I like from their perspective.  The Zion/Ingram combo is so bad defensively.  How do you take anyone from a bad Mav's defense and make that work.  You could send opted in JRich plus WCS, but that is just a kissing your sister type move.  Would they promise not to match an offer to Ball if we added Brunson?  I don't know what to add unless I know what we got for KP and there isn't much point in Adams if you still have KP.

Rather than a first, I've looked at ways to get Ball.  There was a Sexton/Prince for Bledsoe/#10 rumor and I was trying to get in the middle of that.  NO could desperately use Hardaway's shooting, but now their D is even worse (plus, THJ would have to agree to go to NO).  It feels like there is something to be had here, but not loving anything so far.

Am I the only one who doesn't want Kawhi?

There is a good chance he misses all of next season.  There goes another wasted year for Luka.  There is some chance he's KP V-2 and we are constantly worried that every time he falls to the ground, this is the one.  He's not exactly been the epitome of health the last few years.

I've not seen much talk about what this would cost us.  His Max is $39,340,000.  We are 5 million short if we lose THJ, JRich and WCS if we are doing this with cap room.  So, we wipe out four guys to get a guy who can't play?  We can't trade match the $31.4mm needed directly with LAC without causing a hard-cap issue for them (I'm assuming you'd need S&T THJ as part of the deal, though he could go to a third team).  In fact, a three team trade is probably the best way to make this work, but you are still needing to send out at least $31.4mm

KP is a trade match at $31.6mm.  Does LAC want him?  If not, we have to find a third team that wants KP AND has stuff LAC wants.  That will probably require the third team either be a cap room team or have $25.2mm worth of outgoing.  Mark is going to need a spreadsheet for this.  Now we've traded one injury issue for another and wiped out $8 million of the space we have to fill out the roster for the year we are playing without Leonard.  I'm just not seeing it.

I think everything you listed is relevant. But, I have two buts to it Smile

First but: If Kawhi returns to approximately his previous self, Luka-KP combination is lethal. Can't really do better duo than that. Luka is still just 22 so it is not the end of the world if he "loses" another season. Perhaps he will just have a lot of fun knowing the real test comes in 2022/23 while 2021/22 is just "training". Also gives Mavs whole season to gather the right guys for 2022/23 and beyond or accumulate some assets.

Second but: there is absolutely no surefire move Mavs could make that would be certain it leads to contention. Every move they make has a certain level of risk to it. Its not like Conley has been an ironman, for example. There is no assurance Norman Powell will be any better than THJ, he could also be worse (basically he had one very good season, the rest was pretty average. Coincidently that was his contract season). And so on...

If Kawhi is an option, I would seriously consider moving the pieces for assets to use in the 2022/23 season.

If you can get Kawhi you get him. Spend the next year trading everyone on the roster. Roll into 2022 FA with Luka, Kawhi and cap space for Beal.

Best way to shut everyone would be to start presser like:
"High, we would like to present our newest mebers Nico and Jason, but let us first start with an announcement. We are trading player XY to team ZY" Smile
