2020-2021 ROSTER TALK: Archived
(04-28-2021, 11:53 AM)F Gump Wrote: If the Mavs can move Powell with no salary coming back (or use him as outgoing in getting a SNT player), and keep WCS, they can split about 43.3M in salary on 3 players.

So for example, they could add Holmes for 13M, one high-dollar scoring guard for 29.5M, and the 3rd a minimum salary guy. In essence, you've swapped Powell for Holmes, and J-Rich/THJ for a much better player (presumably) and a worse one. There are lots of ways to split that, of course.

There would still be the room MLE left (about 5M) plus minimums.

This was exactly my point. I am not against Holmes or Graham. I am just certain that having 18 mil invested in two back up bigs is way too much and waste of cap space, as harsh it may sound. Mavs can't really improve if they just let two nothing special starters walk for another two nothing special starters. If Mavs decide to seek improvement in the frontcourt, they should move Powell for a bigger need, imho.

In 19-20 he had 48 possessions and was 47.0 percentile.

Of course Orlando has basically zero real playmakers and Birch was barried behing Vuc and to an extent Bamba. Situation with Toronto is different and results immediately show in the stats. The goal would be to get a player before he gets great stats - that is why he is cheap. You can't get cheaper player than Holmes who has better stats now. The smart move would be to get Birch while he was still in Orlando - he would be basically for free.

If the Hornets decide to keep Graham would anybody be interested in trading for Rozier? Is he worth getting? Would he be a fit on our team? He’s 27 and averaging 20 ppg this year. Seems like he could fit the bill as a secondary play maker next to Luka.

I think you have to turn around and flip KP for a playmaker if you want to invest close to $30 million a year on Holmes and Powell.

In a vacuum, I get that we can replace THJ and JRich with an $18 million dollar Norman Powell.  But Powell makes THJ and Jrich look like Magic Johnson.  Career average of 1.4 assists a game.  Powell and DFS offer 0 playmaking.

Honestly, if I wasn't a Mavs fan, I would say this team is already not that fun to watch.  It's the Luka show like the Harden Rockets.  I would like to get a secondary guy that can do things with the ball like they did with Chris Paul.  Also I hope that Luka is more concerned with winning than putting up Harden or Westbrook numbers.  Lebron could average 35/10/10 isntead of 27/7/7 but he's learned that the playoffs are what it's about.

This is why Graham would be the guy I go after with Holmes.  Then you have shored up your playmaking needs as well as frontcourt help.  If that is not doable, then a decent backup plan would be Dragic.  You could probably get him around MLE (this is assuming Miami gets Lowry) and have room to get somebody like Mcdermott for bench scoring.

If we actually managed to land Conley or Lowry, then we can't afford Holmes and you look to somebody like Theis for frontcourt help.

What do we think Graham's market is? 10-12M?

Kind of feels like you could go Holmes/Graham/______/rMLE or you could go Holmes/Dinwiddie/rMLE in a world where you're letting hardaway/richardson/wcs go.

Is the best comp for Graham, Terry Rozier (on the same team of course)? Graham has better numbers than Rozier did when he left Boston. Hornets gave him 3/56. I would peg his range at 12-18. I don't see him getting more than Rozier did or less than the Jordan Clarkson tier of guards.

Luka already pre recruited Graham.

I think I am finally and reluctantly IN on Devonte Graham.

I usually never support 6'1" guards, but he has a 6'6.25" wingspan and has killer on/off numbers (including incredible defensive numbers this year) while shooting 37% from three and being able to create shots.

I have no idea what his market is though. $10-12M feels like it would be a good price for him.

How many people here would say yes to trading KP+DFS+WCS to Toronto for Lowry, Anunoby, and Boucher + picks? Mavs would still be able to sign Holmes after that as long as Lowry's new salary was reasonable ($40 mil/2 years?)

Appreciate the "deep cuts" people here have on their wish lists this year as they seem in the realm of possibility.  Hopefully Donnie reads the board.  :p

The tricky part is he is restricted, so you might have to overpay a little bit, or send an asset in a trade (like the delon wright trade).  We might have to go up to 15, but I think I would still pull that trigger.

I would be happy to get Gary Trent JR and John Collins this off-season myself...both should fit in our budget...

Ya that is the tricky part but they already have LaMelo Ball and Rozier as their starting guards (LaMelo being a budding star). So are they going to pay 13-14 mil/yr for Graham to come off the bench? I think they will be pretty focused on adding a center. Like you say maybe you can get Graham in a S&T for an asset. I think of the RFA's that get talked ab here he and Markkanen are the most "available." I don't really care for Markkanen and believe he is SA bound. Graham though seems viable to me at least.

Keep in mind Charlotte also has to make a decision on Malik monk this summer too. They’re surely not going to keep Monk, Graham, and Rozier. So it seems like there may be a real opportunity to pluck one of them.

This sounds like being at a budget hotel breakfast buffet, after three fat guys got over it.

There is a chance they overlooked the little basket with fruits at the left corner, but they might be just not that fresh.

The way the Hawks have been playing lately, I personally think the Collins ship has sailed and there's no way they let him go. But I'd certainly be very excited if he somehow ends up in Dallas.

I got to admit, I haven't watched much of Graham. Is he a PG? Being 6'1" I would at least expect him to be a combo guard with PG skills.

And if he really is a PG, wouldn't that push Jalen a notch down the Totem pole?

I can understand Lavine and Derozan taking away minutes from JB, because like it or not, JB knows the two are way ahead of him. And of course being taller wings, they can play with Luka and JB on a 3 guard lineup. The same is true with Lonzo to some extent. Ball is a tall PG the same as Luka, but both can play as wings.

Graham will directly be competing with JB.  Pencil him as a JR replacement, but he will eat away from JB's minutes if he is good as people say. So is he a JB replacement eventually?

The way it looks right now, is there even a chance J-Rich will opt out?
