Mavs Rookies G-League Watch: Green, Terry, Bey & Hinton
I have been hearing a lot of fans complaining ab Rick not playing rookies more. Believe me, if he was playing them things would be worse not better. These guys can't help the team right now. Mavs need to be competitive night to night. Maybe Green and company will get better but its going to have to happen in practice and training camp and G-league.

Agree. Starters played 40 minutes in the last two games. Mavs need to play a 7-8 man playoff rotation in games against the Clippers or Blazers. Sucks that the team lacks depth but that´s not going to change over night.

I think we all need to take a deep breath on our vision of our rookies.   This is a weird year and I wasn't expecting much.  Did I expect maybe some minutes for Green with all the players we had out?  Probably.  But I wasn't expecting to have an answer for him for at least a few years.   Will he be better than some of the guys who have played early?  I have no idea.    Even with a full college season last year, summer league and a full camp, I wasn't expecting much.    If you add everything else and a weird end to the college season and now summer league, this is really hard for most rookies.  Some rookies have played well, but this is a marathon, not a sprint.

Making conclusions on the rookies now would be similar to judging a baseball player in his first two weeks in the big leagues.

I have concerns with all four of our rookies, but I think that is fine.    Green was a former five star recruit.   He has athleticism to play in the NBA.   He looks like a hard worker.   His shot is not broken (it will probably take him time to get NBA range and that is pretty normal).  We will see if he turns into anything.    If he takes a jump in a year and a half from now, that would be a nice added boost for this team.   We will see.

This is not a good sign and by not good I mean completely terrible. He isn't injured and not with the team. I don't know how you get in Rick's doghouse when you are in the G league.

Is there some innocent reason like a funeral or something? If it was something like that he wouldn't say there was no timetable. Feels like Terry is done.

He is acting like it's not a big deal so I will just wait and see.

I swear during one of the two Clippers games Terry was shown in a closeup shooting during warmups. Idk what’s going on, but I don’t think he’s been away from the team this whole time

Which is weird because he DOES play rookie point guards

DSJ, Brunson, and Yogi are 3 quick examples

He’s not a PG. That is all.

They had to play the #9 pick and he flamed out the next season.  Yogi was a move made out of necessity.  Bruson's in the epitome of a Rick Carlisle type of player.

Hopefully this is all wild ass speculation.  I'm fine if Terry doesn't pan out but not like this.  *insert Matrix gif here*

Bey looks better than DFS already

Cato answers a question about the rookies:

@Kavi S. I don't know Terry's situation and it's probably best not to pry. for someone to be out multiple weeks for personal reasons, I'm sure it's serious. you're not wrong to ask, no worries there, just don't think it's worth me looking into.

Green is a Finney-Smith/Richardson replacement, for sure. we saw Finney-Smith develop a jump shot, and what Green already has on Finney-Smith is a better feel for the game, which is certainly something you can't teach. his jump shot looked mechanically better in the G-League bubble. (Gubble? Glubble?) I haven't loved what I've seen on the court in NBA games, but I'm still reasonably high on him as a prospect, even if I still wonder if other players at that pick would've made more sense. I think Bey and Hinton are probably seen similarly.

Terry, as a prospect, isn't a sure thing and wasn't drafted as such, but he's got great upside and if he starts putting it together as an NBA prospect, I think that's when you really evaluate what he can be and how he fits into the future.

Not sure how you can be so confident of that already but I do think Bey has the most upside. Terry is MIA and Green looks shaky so far. The good thing about drafting 3 guys is you have better odds to hit on one of them.

Offensively at least he has a lot more to offer and we know he has defensive tools. He just needs to work on the 3 ball even though he might be better than his 32% small sample size suggests.
