2020-2021 ROSTER TALK: Archived

I just don't see what this guy brings that we aren't getting with either JRich or THJ.

Plus he thinks he deserves a BIG payday after this season.

He will be traded by the 25th, so Houston doesn't lose him for nothing. He's a FA after this year.  Despite the injury, someone will take a flier on him for the rest of the season.

Oladipo would be the classic Mavs free agent/acquisition. It's as obvious as them picking Saddiq..... Undecided

My hesitancy with Dipo is that so many people think he's already basically agreed to an unspoken long term deal with the Heat.    Dwayne Wade is supposedly like a big brother/father figure to him, dating back to their ties of both being coached by Tom Crean.   They work out together every offseason.   Heat cleared out a lot of cap room for a potential Giannis run, and will be looking to spend it.   So I do like him as an upgrade over Trey Burke/Richardson as our scoring guards, but only willing to pay the going rate for a 2-3 month rental (a 2nd round pick) and nothing more.

Makes sense. But it seems the only way Dallas can get players of his ilk, is through trades, not F Agency. The Heat are always going to be a destination for some players, because it's Miami, and Pat Riley is there. After a slow start, Miami seems to have found their groove. They have moved up to 4th in the East.

I blame the fact he went to a broken team in HOU that is trying to lose games and he was given the keys to the castle to put up whatever he wants as the reason for the dip in FG%.

But you have a point about the offseason angle and is the only thing that is making me think twice about a deal for him. I think he'd leave without much thought to a team like MIA, but it's also a reason why any potential deal would be cheap.

Dipo is just flatly a better player than those guys. I wouldn't give up future assets hut if there was a 3 way that made sense where we only give up Rich and THJ I'd do that in a heartbeat.

I just flatly disagree with this statement. I’m pretty down on Richardson, at this point, and I would much, much rather have Richardson here next year than Oladipo.

And with injury situation, combined with KP’s injury situation? I don’t even think it’s worth talking about, really.

If they do get him, somehow, I will root for him as hard as I can.

I'd much rather have Richardson because he's likely to be cheaper and more movable and in the range of the caliber of player Oladipo is at this point. Perhaps Dipo returns to form but he's not good enough at this point.

I'm not saying plan powder or anything but theres going to be other FA options and trade options coming up in the next 2 years that address our need at guard better than Dipo even when healthy. I'm perfectly fine with Brunson/Richardson and seeing what Green while we remain patient.

You can point out several teams the last 5 years or so that seemed to be on the cusp of taking that next step into perennial contender only to rush into a move and get stuck with a mediocre roster devoid of assets. We have less assets to start. We have to be patient.

The NBA will disagree that Richardson is better than Dipo. Let's see what contracts they get and then circle back.

Mavs aren't in on Dipo anyway.

How about some John Wall? Mavs need a third guy.

Now that's a contract I'd never like to touch.

Did Stein write something about not trading KP? These mega threads make it very difficult to find breaking news.

I will never put breaking news only in this thread....the Mavs News thread will have all the relevant news there. @"mavsluvr" heard a podcast and quoted Stein as saying it was unlikely the Mavs trade KP. That's all.

Yeah, I have no care whatsoever for what the NBA thinks. I just talking who I'd want on the Dallas Mavericks. Two players with major injury histories are worse than one, which is not as ideal as none.

It's not just about FA but the trade market too over the next few years. .
You can use upcoming FA the next 2 years to kind of see what is on the market tho.

From a guard standpoint here are a list of big name guys that are going to be free agents sometime in the next 2 years... No commentary about them coming to Mavs

Curry
Paul
Kemba (if he opts out)
Lowry
Beal
Lavine
Smart (for those that love him)
Butler

a bunch of other middle tier names that will be a FA or expiring in 2022/2023 and possible guys available in trade.
Some of those guys will make it to FA and some won't and some will get traded.

If Mavs will remain patient and keep building the roster, there's a good chance a name like one of these (or those middle tier guys) will fall to them in FA or they may have the assets to eventually make the trade.

Going all in on Dipo isn't the answer.

Mavs may not even need a guard the way Brunson is playing. But same strategy applies to wings or bigs, just change out the names.

Johnson + WCS for Aldridge

No picks, spurs save $4 million

Luka/Rich/DFS/Maxi/KP
Brunson/Burke/TH/Aldridge/Powell

Keep all our assets. Instantly a smarter team

I would love Aldridge as a bench guy. But he wants out of SA because they are not starting him. Although I am not sure, which team would start him at this stage of his career

So the Mavs want to add shooting and bigman depth (according to Stein) but they probably don´t want to touch the current core (rotation players).
That leaves us with Johnson, picks, end of bench vets and rookies.

Personally I would target Fournier and Bamba but I think the Mavs prefer cheaper options. Maybe Tucker and McLemore? The classic Mavs move would be something like 2 2nds for Redick (absolutely hate it).
