Brunson`s development really suprised me. When he was drafted I thought of him as an old school / traditional PG. Playmaking combined with some midrange scoring. Solid player and already better than DSJ but with limiited upside.
Turns out that I was wrong. He is more of a score first, undersized  SG. Not the best decision making. Not the best playmaker/passer. Best comparisations would be Lou Williams, CJ McCollum or Eric Gordon. Starter quality but at his best in a 6th man role. Question is if he would be happy in a Jason Terry like role.

That´s why I still think that the Mavs need to add another ballhandler. Richardson is not the solution. He has a nice midrange pull up game but that´s it.

My favorite option: Lonzo Ball
He would be the classic floor general/distributor that can run the offense when Luka is on the bench but also has the necessary 3&D (40%/ 8 3PA) skills to play next to him.
I would argue that he has been the Pelicans best player this season. On/off numbers are really telling the story. Lonzo (+7.8) and Adams (+5). Rest of the team +/- 0 or worse.

Problem is that the his trade value might be at an all time high. According to the latest rumors the Pelicans would prefer to trade Bledsoe or Redick (who wouldn´t). Looks like ball played himself of the trading block.

He's just not a pick and roll player. My guess is that the role he'd play here would be similar to what Richardson's is currently.

I know this will seem idiotic, but I actually prefer Brunson.

Ball: 89.6 percentile
Brunson: 93.5 percentile

Agree that Ball isn´t a great pull up shooter or finisher at the rim but his passing is on another level compared to Brunson or Richardson. Not to mention that Ball would be a big upgrade as a 3&D off ball guard as well. As of now he is shooting 39.7% from 3 on 7.7 attempts. That´s slightly better than THJ.

The great thing is that it wouldn´t be a one or the other situation. Ball is 6´6 and could play next to Brunson as well. 3&D guard next to Luka. Main ballhandler when Luka is on the bench. I am not the biggest fan of Brunson the decision maker and PG. I am a big fan of Brunson the scorer. I think a player like Lonzo that distributes the ball would be a good fit next to him. Certainly better than Burke (another score first waterbug guard).

Hopefully an upgraded version of JRich.

He's also shooting damn near 40% from three this year. I'm not sure NOP would let him go at this point.

There is zero chance I would trade Brunson for Lonzo but I would consider J Rich for Ball if the Mavs like Ball as a player better (no idea if they do or not).

Ball is one of those shooters I don't know that I trust when it counts. Also his FT % is a major problem. I have a lot of trust in J Rich late in games to help us close with clutch FT shooting.

I think the shooting concerns are more about his reputation.

The sample size of him being an above average 3-point shooter is getting bigger and bigger.

Last season: 37.5% on 6.3 3PA
This season: 39.7% on 7.7 3PA

Over 600 attempts over the last two seasons and it looks like he is still getting better. Just on a completly different level compared to Richardson. FT concerns are legit and he lacks the volume but 77.5% are solid. Not sure if Richardsons 94.3% are sustainable.

Agree on the Brunson part but I really do think that a more traditional PG would be a good fit next to Brunson. Even better when the same player can also play a 3&D role next to Luka.

Keep in mind what Brunson is being asked to do. His role is to come in and change the game, bring energy, push the pace. When he's paired with Luka, Luka is the point guard. It should be considered a valuable skill that JJB can work off the ball. That's exactly what the Mavs need and not every player can do it, for example, DSJ.

I don't have any doubt that Brunson could fill a more traditional PG role if needed. But what the Mavs need is a dynamic scoring guard who can play off Luka. Brunson is looking more and more like the next JJB to me.

On the topic of JRich for Lonzo ... Lonzo is bigger, younger, better passer, better shooter, better rebounder, more versatile defender. Ball would be a fantastic upgrade to JRich I just don't know how you'd get him from the Pels.

He has been part of trade rumors for a while. I have a feeling Pels will sell high on him and maybe get a draft pick in return which the Mavs don't have to offer.

Ball is good but he doesn't really drive to the basket which is weird and his FT shooting sucks which is a problem. In late game situations it would be dicey to have him and Luka out there when the other team is fouling you every possession.

At any rate unless the Pels really like J Rich and Mavs are interested in that swap then its probably not going to happen.

I hate to poison this board with totally speculative TMZ drama talk...

But I see the Ball family making a power play on Melo's next contract...Bring Zo on board or Melo is leaving.

That being said...if you want to put 2 maybe 3 years of time and money into Zo for him to bounce...go for it.

I get that Lavar has been told to take a back seat...but with Melo looking like a future Super Star...that family is teaming the Ball brothers up one way or another.

So is it wrong that Ball Family Values makes me want to bring in a Ball with KP still in place so we can see which family is either:

the Biggest Prima Donna Loser
OR
we can get Celebrity Death Match Family Style

OK on 2nd thought anyone got a KP to Charlotte trade ready

Whose the third team in this trade?

I don't see the Pels making a lateral (at best) swap for JRich for Ball.  The organization has a lot of reputation and personal ego on the line for that Anthony Davis trade return, but if you want to sign him to a big offer sheet as a RFA the Pels will think had about matching when they already got some big numbers on the books next year (Ingram 30 mill, Bledsoe 18 mill, Adams 17 mill) and Zion coming up on a max before you know it.  Being a small market team climbing out of the 2000-2021 revenue crash might play a factor in the decision to match.

Not interested at all unless it is a part of a bigger trade. Which of JRich-THJ-Brunson would you sit to play him? Even for a minute...

Would you trade them WCS for Matthews and an asset? I wonder where WCS stock is compared to those two

I'm all for bringing in as many 3 point shooters as we can get, and it's not like we're overflowing with the skillset without Seth and when JRich is shooting 3s at under 30% and DFS has just now raised his % to somewhat resembling league average but still lower than where it was last year.     JJ at one time lived in Texas and is a well respected vet, so I'm not sure if the Pels are going to be asking for the moon of if they're going to do a solid for a well respected NBA veteran player.

I would be very interested in JJ if you can him for cheap. You play him when the other guys aren't hitting outside shots.

Just a cheaper version of a Fournier trade. Same way that you would play Fournier.

1. Luka/Brunson
2. Richardson/Reddick
3. DFS/THj

or

1. Luka/Brunson
2. Richardson/THj
3. Fournier/DFS

Really could play any of those 6 together. Obviously Reddick would get fewer minutes as he’s mostly washed up. Burke would be out of the rotation mostly. Not bad backup plans in a market void of decent players

These are the type of deals I’d expect if we can’t get what we want for KP

It hurt my heart to listen to the BS podcast trash the J Rich trade. I do think they a) underestimate his defensive impact and b) gloss over the fact that the whole Mavs team wasn't shooting well to start the season. I expect those numbers to continue to get pulled up. It's still not looking like a good trade though...
