2020-2021 ROSTER TALK: Archived
https://theathletic.com/2404104/2021/02/...mavericks/

Quotes: Mavericks owner Mark Cuban disputed the report, telling The Athletic via email, “Not true. We have not discussed him with anyone.”

Make no mistake: It is incredibly unlikely that Porzingis will be traded this season or even this summer, and it is quite possible he plays well enough in the coming weeks and months to make it seem ridiculous this was even floated.

When asked about him, on the record and otherwise, Mavericks coaches and staffers have been open that Porzingis isn’t yet where he needs to be physically.

The plan to get him back into physical shape has been described to me as one which will have him peaking in April and May when the playoffs are near rather than, say, right now. It’s a deliberate approach for a player that naturally has more risk given his unicorn-like body. It will simply take more time to see whether it’s working.

There are far more trade discussions between rival general managers than are ever reported. These talks happen constantly, with varying levels of seriousness and interest, about nearly every player on every roster.

In all likelihood, the Mavericks will maximize their value by hanging onto Porzingis and doing their damndest to help him find his old form rather than selling low.

I'd be looking at Draymond + Paschall for KP.

Reminiscent of the Shawn Marion acquisition.

The addendum on Collins I would make is he's actually turned himself into a pretty good defender now that he gets to play with a true big and slide back to his natural position and stop having to be a rim defender.   He's not prime Draymond, but he's at least average (if not slighly above) and the Hawks are a better defensive team when he is on the floor.   But when you're building a franchise with probably the worst defender in the league like Trae Young, all other 4 positions have to be above average to make up the difference.

My take is that either we get something like that NOW, or he’s likely moved this summer. You let it all become very public(maybe even tell KP “we’re sitting you because trade talks”). You do this so if it doesn’t happen it creates a major chip on his shoulder. Then we see what he’s made of. The rest of the season we get full effort from him. If everything goes perfect we could still keep him. More likely is we get decent effort and it’s still not good enough. Maybe he improves his trade value some. Move on this summer blaming it on fit. Assuming he isn’t moved now, Johnson’s contract needs to bring in a center. That way if KP pulls a Rondo and quits on the team we can still be competitive in a playoff series

This is the best fit and makes the most sense. I would throw AG in there as well.

The Orlando GM used to be in Milwaukee and could be enamored with KP

KP for that would be worse than the KP for Dennis trade was for NY...

He's not going anywhere...geez, ya'll.
1)  Several players talked about how hard the practices were this week.  It's highly likely that he is experiencing some back stiffness.
2)  Last night was the first night of a back to back against a team that was super understaffed.
3)  Tonight is a nationally televised game.
4)  The league has serious rules now about holding major players out of nationally televised games.

If he's out tonight, then I'm a little concerned about his back....then down the line, maybe trades.

If Mavs are prepared for a bit long term game, Green+Wiseman (or that Minny pick) would also be quite interesting.

IMO, the only way Collins ever made sense was a max sign and trade straight up swap for KP. Not sure why ATL would do it though

I take this more as a - "trade him now or we will make your life miserable in the summer with the max offer". Still don't see why Mavs would "trade" JRich and THJ in free agency for Collins. Unless neither wants to stay in Dallas Smile

If this is true, there is no reason ATL would not max him or match any max offer for him.

He said the same thing before trading for JKidd (step away from the crack pipe).  Means nothing.

I do see smoke around Collins potentially becoming fire in some form or timeframe.

Draymond will not be on the table. He'd be an awesome get and is way more valuable than KP right now.

I would do oubre + filler (dont know if realistic) + Minnesota 1st in a second and I know this is not a  popular opinion on this board.

Minnesota 1st is top three protected and it might be very likely it will end up in top 3.

Only trades that I would consider for KP. Getting back another star level player in his prime. Getting back the NY package (picks, young players).

I actually think that absorbing Blake Griffins contract is a good option in this case. Combine whatever value KP has left with a bad contract to get even more in return. Sadly the Mavs aren´t known for moves like this.

KP + Iwundu + Burke --> Griffin + Stewart + Bey + 2023 1st

Maybe this is KP's "kick in the nuts" moment.  Playing with a chip on his shoulder certainly wouldn't bother me.

Or does it go the other way?

Whatever happens, I think everyone is realizing now that KP is not the answer. If they trade him, great. If they keep him, he can only be the #3 option as a floor-spacing shooting big man (ex: Kevin Love on the LeBron/Kyrie Cavs). Upgrade that #2 scorer no matter what
