2020-2021 ROSTER TALK: Archived

Lakers are so easy to hate because they're well run.

They're picks didn't look so good on their actual roster and chances are all of them wouldn't have developed well if they stayed there. And there is an argument that if Lebron never came, they'd still be stuck in purgatory.

BUT they're the most winningest franchise for a reason, so I'm not really surprised they hit on a lot of their picks.
14x All-Star, 12x all-NBA, 1x MVP, 1x Finals MVP, 1 NBA Championship: Dirk Nowitzki, the man, the myth, the legend.

Oh totally agree. That just shows you how difficult it is to re-build, even IF you draft well.

Then who knows they also suffered from the Kobe retirement tour effect, much like the Mavs did with Dirk to an extent. We just decided to not even try to have good young players. Big Grin

This.

I was driving the Jerami Grant bus for awhile, but this business of him playing the SF spot and handling the ball all the time has me soured on him. Good for him that he's doing better with it than expected, but that's not the Jerami Grant I was interested in.

Interested in the 3&D version and now he improved as a player and can handle a bigger load on offense and suddenly we are out on him? Aren´t we searching for another guy that can create for himself? It´s not like he is taking away the ball from anyone in Detroit. He is by far the best player and only one that can create anything on offense.
I also never heard any rumors of him as a guy that is asking for a bigger role or more minutes. Not really sure why people are blaming him because he picked the biggest paycheck in FA.

He left Denver exactly because of that

Denver offered same contract as Detroit

EVERY rumor during the off-season pointed to him wanting a bigger role, AND to be one of the main ball-handlers. That's what @"omahen" is talking about. Denver matched the Detroit offer, which he turned down for those, exact reasons.

You have a point about the Mavs wanting/needing another creator. I'm not arguing that. I think, for me, the deal breaker is the thought that he'd rather play the 3 than the 4, but to be fair, I don't know whether that part is what he wants or what the team wants.

EDIT: Omahen beat me to this. He's too fast.

Thanks. If that´s the case he really nailed it by betting on himself. Don´t think anyone expected him to turn into a efficient 25ppg first option. And it´s not like he is putting up empty numbers. +9 on/off. Outside of him Detroit is the perfect tanking combination of retirement home (Rose, Griffin) and g-league development team (Hayes, Bey, Stewart, Dombouya, Jackson).

On Wednesday, Kelly Iko of The Athletic reported multiple teams reached out to ask if forward P.J. Tucker is available in a potential trade.
Josh Green is a top 5 Mavs player...

Oh, no question. Big W for Grant, at least for now.

Who would you trade for Tucker? I think he is great but I just don't see it. Besides, he wants extension which I would be very reluctant to give to a 35 year old.

Dwight Powell could certainly help that locker room.  Smile

I love Tucker, but he's not having a very good year, so far. Could just be the result of Houston dysfunction, but at 35, you have to wonder if maybe he's arriving at "washed."

Powell + Terry or Green (depending on the pick/s) + picks --> Tucker + McLemore

Mavs won´t do it.

On/off numbers are not good but as far as I can tell that is more about the Rockets dysfunctional starting five. Outside of that his volume numbers are down but his efficiency is up. Still a good defender and a great shooter from the corner. Basically what he has always has been.
I am not sure if he fits in the Mavs offense. He was a great fit in Houston because he could focus on defense and wasn´t asked to do anything on offense. Basically spent the entire possession in the corner. That´s not going to work in Dallas. A flow offense is build around off ball movement from all players.

Another point regarding Jerami Grant: in additional to his role on the court, he also wanted to play in Detroit because both the GM and head coach are African American.

Wow, interesting. I didn’t know that.

I like what I saw from the KP-WCS frontcourt.  I'm curious.  Assuming everyone is healthy, what would be your starting lineup be moving forward?

Starters:
Luka
J-Rich
DFS
KP
WCS

Bench:
Brunson
Burke
THJ
Kleber
Powell

Johnson, Green, Iwundu, Boban, Terry, Hinton, and Bey rounding out the bench

I like the versatility of our starters.  The bench is very solid.  Quite frankly, this is a good team that has been constructed by the Mavs brain trust with the potential of being a great team.
