2020-2021 ROSTER TALK: Archived

Is this some sort of CBA loophole? I would think otherwise you would not be able to just resume bird rights you already forfeited for another player.

So the bad news is I think it's unlikely we are going to see a trade anytime soon now that the season has started. The one exception is if the Mavs end up tacking onto a Harden trade which could happen at any time. I think Mavs would be interested in Tucker if he is part of a trade but even that is super unlikely to materialize.

It isn't a trick. The Bird rule says 3 consecutive years with the same team OR with the team that acquired the player on contract.

Lee will have to play on a minimum contract for 20-21 because that is the only exception available at the moment. But the 20-21 season would count as consecutive to the 19-20 season and that contract...

So yes if he is signed by Dallas to consecutive contracts he gets Bird rights at the end of 21

A player I'll be watching closely.

I'd never consider him in a Mavs jersey, but having the best spot up shooting, put in a system with Luka giving you the best looks, I can see him flourish more.

It will be interesting to see what he gets paid.  I don't see the Heat matching.

It'd be just like the Mavs to put all their eggs in the basket of a large RFA offer only to get it matched. I don't mind though, I don't know that Mavs have to worry about THJ leaving. Keep J Rich and then swing for the fences. If you come away totally empty you probably still have a starting lineup of Luka, Rich, DFS, Powell, KP.

In my ideal scenario you do your shopping at the TDL unless you really like your FA choices more. Oladipo is definitely gettable and I would give up an asset or take on a guy (ie Lamb) if I get an extension. I am pretty sure you can do some kind of trade and extend bc there were teams trying to negotiate that last TDL. It's not worth giving anything up for Dipo if he just walks in the summer unless it's something really low like two 2nds. If you did get Dipo and the fit wasn't there you can trade him later.

New lineup:

Luka / Oladipo
Oladipo / Burke / Terry
JRich / Green / Iwundu
Gordon / WCS / Powell
KP / Turner / Boban

Regarding why Indy would want to get rid of Turner, I think they don't especially like the fit with Sabonis/Turner together, and Turner is overpaid for what he is. He'd be overpaid here too, as KP's backup, but that's how you get a guy like Oladipo(assuming he shows himself to be healthy).

I think all 3 (Turner, Dipo, Gordon) is sort of overkill but I would like Dipo, Gordon for sure. Dipo upgrades THJ, Gordon upgrades Powell. Both of them have star-like qualities. I think you would probably have to be parting with at least Maxi and DFS in any kind of trade that netted both those guys.

I can't imagine THJ is here past the TDL.

C'mon man... don't act like you are TRYING to see THJ here past the TDL - you trying to get one last Christmas WISH in before the deadline!

With the way he is playing, we are looking at Harrison Barnes level of value return.

Mavs VS Lakers

There was a possession where Johnson was playing point forward. THJ is in the left corner of the court and Johnson moves towards the left side....instead of cutting to the basket, THJ befuddled moves late and goes towards the top of the court. Johnson moves back and does the cut to the basket himself.

I partly blame THJ, but I think the coaching scheme is putting issues here.

I want more JJ point forward tho.

Yeah more of JJ point forward, that was not something im use to seeing in a Mavs team. Usually Rick loves his small ball to direct the movement, but having JJ sort of throws of the opposing teams bigs (imagine a 4 or 5 on the top of the court) away from the basket.

He did a nice entry pass to Boban.

The thing is when KP is back you will see THJ being like the 4th option on offense and getting lots of open looks which is when you see "good" THJ.

I blame all of THJ.  I think he was hoping for a hand off so he could hoist up another one of his patented pull-up bricks.

There's nothing we can do...this roster still isn't good enough and that's with KP included because of the injury/durability concerns. We will be lucky to hover around 0.500 for the first half of the season and then hopefully they start playing well but I'm not optimistic.

This was a team that overachieved last season because of career high shooting from many of their rotation players. That's not likely to happen again so now that they come back down to earth...now what?

When KP is back the offense will get back humming, but you need a beefy front player who can box out and get rebounds.  KP along isn' t going to cut it.  Drummond is the best free agent like that but if there is someone via trade then fine.  But this obsession with wing players is too much.  DFS is a good player but he is a small forward.  We need to have a PF or center start next to Powell.

THJ wasn't the 4th option last year though, he was the 3rd option. If he's not taking a lot of shots there's no point in him being out there.

I feel like what we're seeing is that JRich has taken his starting spot, they just don't realize it yet. That's why I feel he would be better this year in the Seth Curry bench role.
