So the more I think on the James Johnson move... I absolutely love it.
He's going to have a huge role here early on with KP out and Dwight probably on a bit of a minutes restriction.
He should be very expendable by the trade deadline whenever that is.
Of course all these expiring deals and affordable deals can be used to salary match in a trade. With the 16 mill deal of James Johnson you have options for a nice move.
You can go long term and get a real talent and I'm sure they'll try if available. But he's some guys you'd be able to easily salary match with Johnson and filler that we now have:
Porter
Derozan
Aldridge
Dipo
Fournier (lol for the haters)
Conley is a bit more difficult but theoretically including Powell could get that done from $$ but not value standpoint.
Another list of guys that might be on the move that aren't expiring (or have a player option) that may be moved and could be possibly matched with Johnson's deal plus cap filler (some may need Powell):
Griffin
Hield
Draymond (please no)
Lavine
Gary Harris
Gordon
Why it's a low key nice move for the expiring's angle is that it nets you about 3.5 mill extra in salary matching capabilities with Johnson's single contract versus Jackson and Wright together. That's not insignificant. Curious to see if Mavs did a declining # on burke's deal since they appear to not be using the MLE fully.
I think technically with all of our expirings we could technically absorb Wall and Beal if you wanted to scrap up enough assets for a KP type trade again. I don't think that would get it done but theoretically...

This look soft to you?
Boban isn't going anywhere.

I doubt Johnson gets flipped this soon but I wouldn’t be surprised if they traded him close to the deadline, and I highly doubt that anyone Dallas drafted is the “draft compensation” mentioned in the Johnson trade...most likely they are adjusting their reported 2-way offers or doing another 2-1 trade

If the Mavs find a way to turn Powell into Bogdon then I'd go and buy a bottle of champagne tonight.

When Malik Beasily is getting four-year, $60 million on the market after pointing machine guns at people during a parade of homes exhibit, that tells you the Mavs should be rostering as many developmental 3D guys as they possibly can.

It makes zero sense that the Mavs added another 6'6 wing/guard.
That is, unless they're planning on getting rid of a wing/guard. JRich isn't one. Neither does Johnson make sense. That leaves THJ, Brunson, and DFS....
Unless the Mavs finally realized that one can never have enough 3&D wings. I actually like it. Add multiple 3&D guys and see if one of them can earn a bigger role. I obviously thought of different names but if the Mavs think that Iwundu can be that guy that´s great. You also need some bigs.
We don´t know, when Porzingis will be available and even so, he´ll he restricted in minutes and games. Powell is a complete unknown. If he has lost most of his athletism, he´s virtually useless. Boban is a situational player. That leaves Johnson, DFS and Kleber as our healthy PF/C rotation.
They need another big. Might be as simple as releasing Boban, though I think they value his off-court contributions more than his on-court contributions and want to keep him for that very reason.

The easiest guy to move is Boban. Rick didn't really know how to use him and we need more tough guys with neck tats.
Mavs could trade or release Boban and then use MLE to sign his replacement.

Brunson+Powell for Cody Zeller works and would save Charlotte almost $3 million this year. Just sayin'.

Brunson is our only non Luka pure PG. Burke is far more SG than PG. I really doubt he will be moved without PG coming back.

If the Orlando Jedi is our last acquisition of the offseason, this feels really incomplete. Something has to be up.

Opposing front offices please close your eyes now:
Maybe the Mavs lied about Powell´s Achilles recovery to protect whatever miniscule value he has left: "He´s ready for the start of the season. He looks awesome in practice. Like it never happened" etc.
In reality they know, they still need to sign/acquire a starting PF/C for Dec. 22nd.

True but we know that they aren´t done. Another big might be incoming. I think Johnson will be a full time PF/C. Maxi will play even more minutes at center and the Mavs will try to compensate the lack of a true bigman with long and athletic wings. Not perfect and I would have prefered a big forward for the MLE but the Mavs are following the example of other good teams like Boston or Miami. Theis and Adebayo aren´t bigger than Kleber.

Save $3 million this year to spend $11 million the next two. Oh boy. Not even the Hornets are that dumb.

Boban is the easiest guy to upgrade. I like him a lot but Mavs want to toughen up and Baynes for example brings more to the table.

What about Thon Maker? I know the teams he’s played on have given up on him, but I think that would change if he played for a winner.
