As a non-Bird FA, Willie can
Sign for 120% of last year or $2.6mm
Opt in to his current contract or $2.28mm
Opt out and sign for part of the MLE
Leave
I raised another option a few weeks back which was opt out and sign for the minimum. It is good cap manipulation, but probably not the most likely outcome as Willie would have to take a $400,000 cut to do it. The benefit is Dallas would have a minimum hold on him in 21 rather than a $2.9mm hold. Dallas could easily make up the extra $400,000 and them some as he will be EB next summer and can sign for up to about $10mm.
The 1 + 1 doesn't erase the concern over leaving money on the table, but it provides injury protection. So, if you did the minimum on a 1+1, Willie is guaranteed to make up the money he missed by agreeing to the minimum should his career end. It still isn't the most likely outcome, but David's idea makes a minimum deal more palatable. My prediction is a 1+1 valued at $5.3 over two years and he stays in Dallas.

My fear is that they don't want him. He's not the kind of player whose plusses tend to be valued by RC.

Looks like Houston needs a center.

How about they give Hartenstein another chance?

Probably the other Willy, Luka's friend Hernangomez.

I hope we move. This is a knock on him as a person, but basketball just doesn't seem important to him.

Ever since Sam Perkins, this team doesn't seem to do very well with birds in the hand.

I mean, I'm not going to see it as a huge loss if he walks, but I'll admit I was hoping to get another year of cheap backup center play and a possible trade deadline throw in for that 2nd rounder.
It's partly due to the shutdown and then the bubble happening when his wife was giving birth, but somehow they might have potentially lost that trade, which I didn't think was possible at the time. They didn't even get their full rental period if he walks.

I should have said "isn't a knock against him as a person". He seems like an eclectic soul which I dig, and he has a ton of interests which is cool. I just don't think basketball or maximizing his physical gifts is at the top of his important things list.

Is it odd to anyone else that Jet Terry mentioned Drummond in one of his posts. Schwartz guy. It was so random and I can’t stop wondering why he said it.

Honestly wonder if he even wants to play basketball next year with the amount of money the league is going to withhold in escrow. Hard to talk yourself into mailing it in for a paycheck for another year when the paycheck is a fraction of what you're used to mailing it in for.

I don't think this is considered enough, especially regarding big men who have a modicum of athletic ability. A lot of them don't really want to be great basketball players, they just hit the genetic lottery and haven't found a most suitable career choice that makes up for the salary dropoff. You can Andray Blatche your way into a 9 year career in the NBA with very little effort if you're 7 feet tall and not a stiff.

Indeed. It obviously means he is leaving and it means he is likely to opt out.

My guess (without giving it too much thought) is that this allows BOS to explore trading him to a team he likes before he just bails....maybe trading him for someone who they need to opt in before he can be traded...... like THJ?

Yeah, maybe. And the deadline extension could be about "please don't make me sign in Atlanta. I'm NOT coming back."

Although, if he does opt out, deals can't be made before free agency start anyway, right? Unless you are Milwaukee. So THJ contract is not an issue. Unless he is being traded on his one year contract and they are waiting for draft result

That is what I was speculating....Hayward stays on his one year deal and then signs extension in DAL for less money.
