No way he opts out and signs for MLE. If he opts out, he will sign for higher salary

How about telling his agent - Happy Walters we want to give him $14 mil a year for him to pick up his PO. Then tell Den that we like him and offer them a S&T for Wright, Jackson and the GS pick since they do not have a 2nd round pick in this next draft? Or we could offer a 1st round swap (18 for 21). Maybe he OPs in and we just trade Wright and a pick or Picks?

The story mentioned Freak in the headline, but it is really more about the issues around 2021 free agency in an uncertain cap world. They specifically go into how Covid impacted Miami's plan to get Freak and VO (one by sign and trade) in 21. I'm personally not in favor of hoarding cash for 2021. How much cap room did LA have when it acquired Davis?
I'd rather hoard assets (and salaries). Kemba Walker and Durant both moved by sign and trade last summer. Tim Cato often talks about this draft being the last time for maybe a decade that Dallas will be able to control a middle of the pack pick cheaply. If that is important to Dallas, wouldn't it also be important to others? I'd rather have an upcoming RFA who I can keep or S&T in 2021 than the pick as it provides much more flexibility. I'll attach Luke Kennard's name (dealt for Jackson and #18) to that strategy because I like the fit if he stays as an off the ball shooter who can also handle the ball some to give Luka a play off occasionally. He also serves as THJ insurance, but can certainly be on the same roster if it worked out that way. I also like Detroit's angle of getting a pick rather than having to make a tough decision a year from now.
I also think you have to try to steal someone with the MLE this summer. There are some good players like Wood and Jones Jr. who are still young enough to be attractive in a trade a year out. I realize that combination of moves gives the team maybe 11 players in the top 200 or so (KP, Maxi, Powell, DJJ (or Wood), DFS, THJ, Kennard, Wright, Brunson, Curry and Luka). But, at some point you can cash in two or three of those (plus the 2025 pick for an upgrade). If Luka truly makes those around him better, then everyone will be putting up very efficient numbers here and will increase their attractiveness to other teams.
Bottom line, the way to plan for 2021 isn't by hoarding cap room. It is by hoarding useful and trade-able contracts.

I´d sign Dunn and draft the BPA, probably Lewis, Green or Ramsey from the latest mocks and then worry about 2021 next. Even if the circumstances are totally different now, this capspace strategy has never worked for us and hardly anybody else in the league.
If Dunn or the pick become an All-NBA defensive player that might already be enough for us to win a championship eventually. $12M of air don´t win anything.

For a long time now there has been a small faction of us that has been tooting this horn. I don’t get how any team could do anything different and think it’s a smart plan since the blueprint has been laid out for years now. Get the best, players on contracts that are at least on par with their worth and put out a quality product while hoarding assets for the big move.

Obviously, I agree with your agreement. Two points though...
The sign and trade strategy is best employed when someone (not necessarily you) has cap room. That way there is a legitimate threat of Giannis walking for no return. Given the uncertain cap, it may be harder to get there, but surely some good team will be able to create enough room to be a threat. At that point it is a matter of luring the FA while at the same time being able to put together a strong enough deal to satisfy Milwaukee. The S&T route requires two yes's...the player and the team that is losing him.
We have to remember that the trigger point for Freak is whether or not he signs his extension. If he does, the 2021 chase is over. If he doesn't, does Milwaukee really take the chance of waiting until the summer (or fall) of 2021? I'm really not sure where the best opportunity is to maximize value (current summer, TDL or the next summer). I guess they could set up an auction in 2021, but boy that is a lot of risk. It is basically the difference between being Detroit (with no hope) and New Orleans (with some hope).

I think yes. With Giannis they are a contender, which is very difficult to become as a small market team. So better to run it through, try to win it and then hope for Giannis to resign than giving up even before they tried. Unless of course everything goes very wrong this playoffs.

On the other hand we now have lost three players and still have three centers on the roster, which reduces our remaining options for four positions to nine players. We´ll have to get some good 15 minutes out of JJB/MKG/Jackson.

Since the Mavs now have 3 players out, if someone else were to get injured in Orlando would they be able to sign a player through the hardship exception? I think not allowing replacements for injured players could get risky for the NBA and some team rosters who are in a similar situation.
With Lee our though, who do you think Dallas signs? Broekhoff makes sense and is my first option, but if Atlanta waived Carter would Dallas consider placing a claim on him? Are there any other veteran/intriguing players on non-Orlando teams that could be waived that would be interesting?

Personally I would prefer giving a chance to a younger guy like Reaves. Other than that, Shumpert might be a better defensive specialist option than MKG.

Well, that seems clear. Maybe.
Keeping Lee when you only have 12 healthy players for the playoffs bc he's a good locker room guy lol. The most Mavs move ever.

If they do keep Lee it is probably more about the chance to use him in a sign and trade in the offseason.
Otherwise it is pretty risky to only have 12 players + 2 way.
Especially since you have no way of knowing how players are going to come back after a long time off.
Seems like there could be an increased risk of soft tissue injuries with the limited training camp.
Plus MKG, Boban, Stein and Jackson are all limited role-players giving reduced flexibility for Carlisle.
Maxi, DFS and Wright are going to have to step up for the Mavs to make any noise in the Playoffs

Maxi, DFS and Wright are going to have to step up for the Mavs to make any noise in the Playoffs I think players can only be SnTed when they get an offer that's for 3 or more years. I doubt any team is interested in signing Lee for a contract that long at this stage of his career.
I'd just waive him and bring in a healthy player.

Only the first year has to be guaranteed.

Exactly. His expiring deal with Bird rights (that can be re-upped with only 1 year guaranteed) could come in really handy for salary matching in a trade. In a year where financial uncertainty may drive teams to shed salary, I can't imagine Dallas would want to cut him before seeing what options are out there. And don't forget that free agency starts this year just 2 days after the draft. So I could easily see a handshake draft day deal involving picks and a S&T Lee for the right player.
