Trade & Free Agency 2026/2027
The Knicks would need to make a trade by Monday afternoon if they want to keep Bruce Brown. I think they will explore all avenues to make that happen. It's logical to assume that the Knicks will move third-year wing Pacome Dadiet. But I believe New York will explore other deals — including trades involving third-year guard Tyler Kolek — this weekend and Monday. The Knicks will be asking teams to take on a player without sending back salary. To get a deal done, New York may need to attach its own second-round picks (New York will have at least 11 second-round picks in the next seven drafts). Something worth noting here: multiple teams (Charlotte Hornets, Los Angeles Lakers and others) are trying to attach second-round picks to work through a roster crunch. So, the Knicks have competition in that regard. But given their plethora of second rounders, they have the draft capital to get a deal done.

The Hornets want to keep veteran swingman Connaughton just like the Mavericks want to keep Powell. But the young Hornet who appears to be in the most serious jeopardy if Charlotte does retain Connaughton is recent No. 6 overall pick Tidjane Salaun. The 6-foot-10 forward is just 21 and I've heard from more than a few folks that the first draft pick of the Jeff Peterson Era in Charlotte has taken some real strides this summer. Yet it's also true that Salaun realistically projects to be a rotation player at best at this stage after the Hornets once believed he had a star-level ceiling. And Connaughton is known to be a Kon Knueppel favorite who brings undeniable locker room value to Charlotte's team.

Heat Central: Stan Van Gundy is OUT on the Miami Heat and says Bam Adebayo is overrated. “I’m not as high on Miami as people are… The shooting they added compromises them badly on the defensive end of the floor. Even though he was great last year, I’m not sold on Davion Mitchell as a full-time starting PG… I’d actually be surprised if they were in the top 6… I’m not a fan of their roster. — I think Wiggins is underrated but I think Bam is a little overrated, particularly at the offensive end of the floor. I’m not sold on them.” Damn.

I guess SVG didn't leave Miami on good terms.

The Orlando Magic are reportedly unwilling to offer Anthony Black the same contract Brandin Podziemski received from the Warriors, per
@WindhorstESPN

“Brandin Podziemski is a comparable player to Black and his five-year, $110 million deal with the Warriors last week has framed his contract talks to a degree, especially because Podziemski and Black share an agent, Bill Duffy. The Magic, sources said, have not yet been willing to offer the same $22 million per year average that Podziemski signed.

Magic will be interesting to watch this year.  They have a new coach and hope they reach the hype they had last season instead of the rocky season last year.   I don't think there is enough money for everyone even if they play better.   If they don't play better, much bigger changes will come.

They have some regret already on the Suggs extension already.   30 plus million until 2030.   He just has not proven to be healthy.   That will likely limit them extending Black at the moment.    Suggs probably has limited value on the market now due to health and contract

Stefan Bondy: The Knicks have cut down the final roster competition to two players: James Wiseman and Bruce Brown. To keep both, the Knicks would need to make a trade. They’ve prioritized a center and, as The Post reported, Wiseman was the frontrunner since camp started. The Knicks are waiving Tony Bradley and Ochai Agbaji along with Eubanks, sources said.

Mark Followill: Gotta wait on opening right rosters to be set Monday for this to be official but looks like the Mavs are going to end up with one of the more significant get younger shifts of the NBA offseason: Players added on standard contracts who are 25 or younger: Milwaukee has 6: Nate Ament, Kasparas Jakucionis, Brayden Burries, Bogoljub Markovic, Kel’el Ware, and Jaime Jaquez Jr. Mavs have 5: Morez Johnson Jr., Sergio de Larrea, Zaccharie Risacher, Santi Aldama, Tarik Biberovic. Couple of other teams may end up at 5…several at 4. We’ll see how it shakes out next Monday.

I wonder if there is a Christie for Black deal or a Christie/Aldama for Suggs deal that makes sense.

I get that Suggs is expensive and isn't a great 3 point shooter.  But, he brings ballhandling and POA defense.  You won't get everything you want in one guy with what we have to offer.  Suggs could play next to Kyrie in the near term and next to Larry in the longer term.  I went down the Suggs road rather than the Black road because I fear Black would cost more than people are comfortable with.

I think DAL and ORL would make really bad trade partners because they both have an excess of talent at C and F, and both need to upgrade at PG.

If ORL trades Suggs (or Black), they will do so to get back an even better PG in return. DAL would not have that player to send.  They are looking for the same target.

Mavs trade partner would be a team with TOO MUCH talent at PG, like the Mavs used to have before they Nico-ed it all away. Does such a team even exist?

Mavs should try to get either Fox or Harper from the Spurs.

Im serious about it. Seems like harper is frustrated with how the spurs are using him.  There will be  time where either fox or harper leave the spurs. Mavs should  wait and be aware of the opportunity.

Could any other contract impasses lead to an early trade?
Teams are watching Magic guard Anthony Black, who is coming off a breakout year in which he averaged 15.0 points and started 40 games. The Magic have an expensive roster now and going forward, currently in line to pay about $32 million in luxury tax this season, which would be their first year in the tax since 2010. The franchise has paid a total of $39 million in its 37-year history.

So the Magic are squeezed on their books and, after trading four first-round picks for Desmond Bane last year, are short on draft assets. This has led rival teams to watch whether Orlando considers moving on from Black if they can't come to terms on a rookie extension before the Monday deadline.

"We're in a lot of tighter quarters than we've been in years past," Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman said at media day. "We believe he's a bright young player in this league who's just going to get better and better, and we'll have continuous conversation with his people up until the deadline, and we're hopeful that we can arrive at something."

The Magic agreed to a five-year, $150.5 million extension with guard Jalen Suggs right at the October deadline in 2024, but he's played just 92 games since.

"I don't think they trade him now even if they don't get a deal," an Eastern Conference executive said of Black. "They are under pressure to win this season because of that payroll, and they need him because of Suggs' injury issues."

Weltman rarely makes trades, especially during the season, and he left open the possibility of letting Black enter restricted free agency next summer.

"We expect Anthony to have a great year," Weltman said. "[Extensions] don't always get done right now. Sometimes they get done later."

Shams Charania: The Utah Jazz have claimed center Tony Bradley off free agency waivers, sources tell ESPN. Bradley was the Jazz's No. 28 pick in 2017 and now returns where he spent his first 3 NBA seasons. The Jazz inherit the non guaranteed contract that Bradley signed with New York. There’s a per day cap hit for being on the roster.

Any interest here or no fit for Dusty-ball, even when our guard rotation is the weak point of the team?

I think Brown falls more into the Naji category and I am already questioning his fit on the roster. Adding another somewhat okayish ballhandler/playmaker with mediocre/bad shooting isn't going to fix the guard rotation.
