Mavericks hire Dusty May as next Head Coach

The Mavericks, I’m told, are expected to secure former Pelicans coach Willie Green as a top assistant for Dusty May’s first NBA coaching staff.

The Warriors hoped to bring him back for a second stint on Steve Kerr’s staff but May’s jump to the NBA gave Green two strong options.

After a 16-year playing career, Temple has accepted May's pitch to move into coaching on a staff also to feature ex-Pelicans coach Willie Green.

Also: @TheSteinLine has learned that new Mavericks coach Dusty May is also pursuing Garrett Temple for a spot on his first NBA coaching staff in the event that 16-year NBA veteran — who spent the past three seasons as a Toronto Raptor — elects to move into coaching.

Temple played for 11 different teams, a few European teams, and some lesser teams in odd leagues. He was playing for the Bucks when the Mavs won the title 2011. When a guy has that kind of career, it's because teams want what he has - which may not be basketball skill. He never shot particularly well, although he played good dfense. For at least half his career, he was decent rotation player - mostly on bad teams.

I have no idea what he did to keep getting acquired by other teams, but it's a certainty that he was an all-star in the lockerroom. He'll be a good influence on the young guys.

Well, yeah. NBA team practices are way fewer than for a college team. Probably also not as lengthy. It will take a different approach to get the players on the same page, and developed.

I've noticed a trend of the Mavs getting basically everyone they want so far when it comes to front office/coaching staff hires. For example, both Green and Broylan had good offers from other teams and them choosing Dallas was news of note in those other cities. I think when it comes to these assistant types you can probably give some of the credit to May and some to Unir/Schmitz, too, but I kind of think this is also an indication that the Mavs' ownership group is out there outspending teams for these guys. 

I'm pretty thrilled by that.
