Who falls in the $12.2m-$16.2m range, where preserving that AD TPE was crucial in allowing them to go over the MLE number, but stay below the tax line...

This would seemingly fit what Masai and Mike seem to like (except for the length of contract part).  To me, it makes sense to look at the upper end of your range as Biber could have had more money if we were only trying to save room for a $14mm player.  BTW, I have slightly more room under the tax on my spreadsheet (not saying it is correct).  I have $16.493mm.

I think the difference there is I'm not sure if the Ryan Nembhard tax variance of $260k should be accounted for or not. I added it, just to be safe.

So how does the trading of the MLE work?   I don't know if I see a fit for the MLE, but not sure how the trading of the MLE works.

Dennis Schroder of course, $14.8m
Scoot Henderson $13.6m
Moses Moody $12.5m

I get the money matches up almost perfectly, but Jovic's deal for his production currently is unstomachable. For example, Isaiah Stewart who is a more productive player on a similar contract required 3 2nds to be dumped. Aldama a better player than both Steward and Jovic and making slightly more than both, required the equivalent of 3 seconds to acquire.

Does that push Jovic into a FRP-territory-required-to-be-attached-to-dump?

Does that even sound appetizing to Dallas as a team with a relatively clean cap sheet that can feasibly use said space in the future to acquire really good talent around Cooper? 

If MIA had a good point guard that fit, then I could see Jovic being realistic, but you'd have to be really sure he'll thrive in a new environment. Which I'm not too sure of.

Just for fun:

Jovic+ Dru Smith to Dal (18.4in). Klay+Martin to MIA (27.4 out) works financially. MIA only has 2027, 2029, and 2032 FRP to swap. Mavs don't have either to swap in 27 or 29, but a swap in 32 could be interesting given that's far past the Giannis window. In lieu of draft capital, MIA eats a bit of bad money (but positionally works out for them because they are in desperate need to fill out their roster). 

Plus getting off of Martin's deal for next year sort of offsets the cost of eating Jovic for at least a season. The net increase in the Lux tax room goes to $24,912,414, which means we are allowed to use the full AD trade exception without dipping into the tax (and 1st apron room goes to 32,154,849). Does a short term high value deal in a SnT for Mathurin make more sense for this roster now in this reality? We wouldn't even have to send anything out, just sign him to the TPE amount, which would allow Clippers to fully pursue Watson.

First thought looking at that team is that they have a lot of guys who can play 20 minutes a game.

With a full 15-man roster. Here are some relevant notes on players that we should keep in mind:


Kyrie Irving has a $42.4m player option next year. Deadline: 6/29/27

Klay Thompson is an expiring this season. $17.4m.

Santi Aldama has a team option next year of $17m. Deadline: 6/29/27

Caleb Martin has a $9.3m player option next year. Deadline: 6/29/27

Naji Martin is an expiring $9.4m and is extension eligible.

Max Christie has a $8.8m player option next year and is extension eligible. Deadline: 6/29/27

Tarik Biberovic has a team option next year of $3m. Deadline: 6/29/27

Dereck Lively is extension eligible. Will be a restricted free agent next season.

Marcus Sasser is extension eligible. Will be a restricted free agent next season.

Ryan Nembhard will be an unrestricted free agent next year.


As of now, the only ones absolutely on the books for next season are:

Its hard to describe how underwhelmed I would be if all of this maneuvering is to get Jovic into the TPE.  It would require an unprotected first to make me even remotely interested.  Normally I would give the beware Miami players line, but I don't need to because he was terrible last season.  No idea how we would revitalize his value with 4 better power forwards on the roster.

Ha, I know this part of the offseason every teams fans base feels positive.   I keep looking at the roster and if they could add a 1/2 combo guard who can create, play defense, spread the floor this team starts really coming together.   That is the big hole for me.    Minus the health of our centers.

I agree. Maybe not a 1st, but a 2nd, and he’s an expiring, good player who fits the mold of what Dallas has already been adding. Makes perfect sense to me.

With Jovic…I was into them taking him (with picks coming this direction) at the beginning of the summer, but the forward/big scene is even more packed now. I can’t see it.

However, I will say that as the summer goes on…maybe fewer teams have the wiggle room to facilitate solutions to problems like that, or even the mechanisms to do so. The Mavs might have waited long enough for that role in a transaction to be worth quite a bit.

When you use all or part of your MLE in a trade, you don't actually trade any or all of your MLE. You just use up part of it, in the same way you would use up all or part of a Trade Exception, as a trade matching tool.
