Trade & Free Agency 2026/2027
(07-07-2026, 07:56 PM)SleepingHero Wrote: The Mavs currently have about ~38 mil of tax room. After using the MLE, absorbing Aldama, and signing Tarik, and getting Sasser, they'll be right at that tax line, which means using the TPE will put them into the tax.

Now does Dumont care about that? We will see.

Whether he does or doesn't care, I'd personally try to put off paying tax one more year, at least. As long as possible. Just for the strategy of it, not to save real life money.

I guess my thinking is that looking around, I'm not sure I see a free agent left worth offering the full MLE, except for maybe Mathurin, who nobody around here seems to want, so...how about not using it, then, and you just stay opportunistic with the big TPE between now and the deadline, with the flexibility to afford using it if/when the right opportunity comes up?

They left out officially getting Tarik’s rights - just in time. Now he can be bought and signed nearly on time without complication.

Wonder if that 3rd year of Middleton is a team option.  It's not a ton of money, but I don't think I want to be in the Khris business three years from now.

I still want clarification on this deal. My instinct is that Stein's version was wrong - it just doesn't add up with the buyout. I'm worried that we're assuming he's going into the BAE and will be disappointed to learn soon that it's a portion of the MLE.

I'll be fine, either way - obviously I'd prefer the smaller contract, but I wish we could get some definitive news on this.

The Mavs won’t be. Don’t care about Washington.

If we have preserved the full TPE, then it means we could use it to absorb Kuzma in a Herro deal or Poeltl in a Barrett deal. That could make both trades feasible at a much lower asset cost. You pull that off, you could still do something else with the MLE like Schroeder

Irving/Schroeder
Herro/Christie
Flagg/Marshall
Washington/Aldama
Lively/Johnson

I mean that´s a pretty damn good team, if healthy.

Come on, man. Quit with Schroeder. This is the time to make amends with Dirk, not push him further away.

I guess a pretty good job by Memphis too, right?   Santi sort of was buried there now, and by taking on AJ Johnson and DLO they get a potential of 3 second round picks, 1 second round pick swap and a protected top 20 first that will probably be another second.

There should really be a documentary with all the cap nerds coming in and figuring out trades.

I think you all need to quit making so much out of this. They have long made up. Schroeder has said many times, that he looked up to Dirk and that he helped him get settled in the NBA. That was a dark period of German basketball, with basically no talent outside of an aging Dirk and a young Schroeder. If they want to add a veteran PG he´s easily the best option, especially since they push the new Euro initiative.

They are collecting like crazy. They have three 1sts next year, too.

Grant Afseth: One thing I learned about Khris Middleton from people with the Washington Wizards is just how valuable he was as a mentor. He proved to be a helpful presence for Cooper Flagg during his time in Dallas. It's easy to see why the Wizards wanted him back.

Keith Smith: Factoring in the reported contracts for John Collins, Kevin Huerter & Javonte Green and the Gary Harris/Taurean Prince acquisitions, I've got the Pistons at about $42.8M under the luxury tax. That's enough room to give Jalen Duren 25% of the cap max without going into the tax. Detroit also creates a $15 million trade exception.

I think Dirk passed the torch to Maxi who carries the Wurzburg disdain for Schroder these days.

Shams Charania reveals that Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown’s personal relationship off the court was “as close to non-existent as you could have” over the last year. "It is a tale of two different people."

It will be a fascinating lockerroom.   Young guys who expect playing time.  Stars/former stars on big contracts.    Big contract guy looking for extension.   Contract year Ayton.   I could see it working out or crashing out.   It seems to lean that the front office thinks they are  playoff team and the build is done.

I'm sure Tatum and George's will be much better.

I suppose the talking heads need to sift through all of the moving parts here before we get a full report. I would love for Sasser to be in there too.
